joining me now in an exclusive interview, democratic governor of connecticut, dannel malloy and msnbc's joy reid. governor, what did -- what do you think the release of the new information that we now have, the details that we now have about what happened in connecticut, what do you think about how that information helps frame where the issue stands now? >> well, listen. we need universal background checks as the president said. 90% of the american public supports it. but we also need to get rid of these kinds of weapons. they are assault weapons. they are used and designed to kill people. that's what that weapon was brought to sandy hook school for. and it was brought with large capacity magazines which until 2004 were not allowed in the united states. it is time for us to wake up and smell the coffee. our children and our citizens to be slaughtered. we cannot allow 40% of guns in this country to change hands without a background check. i can't get on a plane without somebody doing a background check on me. and yet we're going to sell 40% of our weapons in the united states without a b

since then, including under governor malloy, taxes have gone up by lot, especially in context.icut it is less competitive now than it has been any time in 50 years. of course it the northeast, the whole region, this is one of the point, it's actually losing a lot of jobs, a lot of factories, businesses to the southern states and the sun belt states. one of our points it is a not just because the weather is better. they have economic and tax climates that are much more conducive to business. tracy: a lot of these states no state income tax. right to work states which seems to be a common thread. clear part of the problem. >> its apropos that you should mention that today because michigan officially became a right to work state today. clwyd they pass that law in december and today the law takes efft. twenty-four states that a right to work, and we define in our analysis that right to work states do significantly better in terms of attracting businesses and workers. the pattern -- the big picture is, we say is, the rising out of the south, becoming the economic superpower region o

governor dan malloy of connecticut noting today we know he used 30 round magazines to do it and they aloud him to do maximum damage in a short period of time and he left the lower capacity magazines at home. remember, we've now got the search warrants and so now we know what was there. every bit of ammo and firearm in the shooter's home was purchased legally. his mother was not on the black market buying illegal or modified weapons. she bought like a law-abiding citizen. she bought what was legal. she would have only been able to buy 10 round magazines if the assault weapons ban had not been allowed to expire in 2004 or brought back after it expired. they would not have had those extended magazines lying around in their well-armed home. why bring that to the scene you want to kill as many first graders as possible? why bring the 10 round magazine? why handicap yourself with a 10 round magazine when you can instead kill so many more people so much faster with the big magazines? so leave that one at home but bring the 30 rounders. part of the beltway common wisdom that nothing is going

and in connecticut, governor malloy has proposed and legislators appear prepared to act on firearm safety reforms as well. they include making private gun sales subject to bkd cheackgrou checks, limiting the size of high-capacity ammunition magazines, and strengthening anti-gun trafficking measures. newtown families have played a big role in advancing this proposed legislation. they can speak from firsthand pain. but such state action is not enough. there is a national problem, because guns sold in states with weak gun laws are all too often found crossing state lines and are used to commit crimes elsewhere. so we really need national leadership in washington if we're going to stop the scourge. thankfully, there has been some encouraging progress. for example, last week, the senate judiciary committee voted in favor of a number of >>s, including a measure to expand background checks to private gun sales, which is how some 40% of gun purchases in the nation are made. more than 6.5 million gun sales during 2012, alone. there is no question that if this becomes law, it will keep guns out of
