just because of what joe manchin and i did in 2013. congress had set staithtorially that student loans -- loans would be set at a little over 6.2%. today, this year, it's under 3.8%. and that directly goes into the pockets of the kids and their families. so we are making it more affordable. know say it's going to be free, this is nothing free in life. i think we can work to make sure there are credits for those that need it. that we can streamline the application for student loans. but unless we can figure out a way to get professors to work for free, buildings to be given to us for their use, somebody's got to pay for it. i don't want to put any more of the burden on americans' taxpayers, i don't want to put it on north carolina taxpayers. federal government said we're going to make this free, they're going to -- they're going to tell north carolina you've got to maintain what you were doing before in subsidies. we're one of the highest subsidized states in the country for public education and we would be punished because other states

he added joe manchin on one hand and bernie sanders to the other, to his leadership team. your enemies closer. they're all on the same team but there is an element of it. he wants to make sure the people that cause the most trouble in the room and not outside of it. so that's what you're seeing. the reality, he joked about it. he said they're young in senate years. there isn't a lot of fresh blood for democrats here. that's true on the house side too. stiff resistance to her becom g becoming. the frustration with her is real. there's not necessarily somebody who is stepping up, a person who channel that frustration in a by a could be a threat to her. so it looks like she is likely to continue. but none of this solves the democrats' overall problem which is that it is not clear who the next generation of leadership is. i think there's a feeling the clintons stifled anyone else from running for president. the hill leadership has been the same for many years now, over a decade really, and a lot of the younger members feel really frustrated. now, of course, you have this divis

senator joe manchin from west virginia. you heard the historical references for the democratic party where it stands now. george, your thoughts? >> hysteria is overwhelming democrats like that staffer who said climate change is going to kill her in ten years or so. hillary clinton is a historically untalented politician. she won the popular vote. republicans have lost the popular vote in six of the last seven elections. they're not an irresistible juggernaut. our political parties are maze g i amazingly supple mechanisms. they adjust fast. the republicans lose 44 states. goldwater candidacy gets less than 40% of the vote. they are going to disappear. they won five of the next six presidential elections. it's a little premature to write the obituaries for the world's oldest political party. >> there was some parts that just did not hear what was happening, obviously. i talked to senator jim webb as he was getting ready to run for president. this is part of the interview. >> who would be the represented party for the working

is more ideologically and geographically diverse including bernie sanders, tammy baldwin and joe manchin. he has taken heat with 17 protests arrested outside his office this week for his ties to wall street. that might explain the need to add sanders to leadership. he says it's important to have an economic message that connects with rural and white working class voters who supported donald trump. >> there's a debate going on whether we should be the party of the obama coalition or the blue collar american in the heart line. some think we need to spend all of our energy focused on one group of americans or another. i believe that there does not have to be a division. >> nancy pelosi sent a letter to colleagues designed to scare off potential challengers writing, quote -- an up and coming ohio lawmaker sounds intrigued by taking on the fight. >> we can't ever be a majority party if we just win new york and california. we have to win these midwestern great lake states. we need two or three or four or five members of congress from each of those states. we gotta talk about these lunch bucket
