this is the brentwood area, mandeville canyon, very close to the 405 freeway that cuts los angeles north south. we're very close to the getty center, one of los angeles iconic cultural institutions that was evacuated yesterday. and with a small staff, they're hoping to to save it from a potential exposure to this fire. the va center, also not far from where we are, has been evacuated from an abundance of caution. that campus now being told that students should expect online classes for the next few days and on standby for potential evacuations. all of this as we are approaching the end of this window of lull in in the wind that we've had, the santa ana winds that kind of let out for a little bit are starting to pick back up. one of the most important aspects of this fire fighting has been the help from the skies. we've been seeing all morning helicopters making drops in these neighborhoods behind me of fire retardant and water in the hopes of helping that. but we're not sure how much longer they'll be able to go if the winds continue to pick back up. >> all right. cnn's julia vargas jone

nbc news national correspondent morgan chesky is in mandeville canyon for us. morgan, i know that you've been there for some time. what is the latest where you are and the ongoing fight there? yeah, amy, this firefight is changing by the day. we know evacuation orders went into effect late last night for all of the residents here in mandeville canyon. after that, palisades fire continued to grow. fortunately, everyone was able to get out safely. but what happened today is the winds that were expected to die down have stayed somewhat unpredictable, and that is why you are seeing the continued burn behind me. we have seen water drops in this area all day long, but firefighters tell us that it is still a frustrating firefight for several different reasons. and what makes this area so important is that mandeville canyon is essentially a conduit of sorts, from where the palisades fire has been burning to the heavily populated san fernando valley. should the fire move through here, it could open up an entirely new front. and that is why firefighters tell me they iden

survives in southern california as a palisades fire continues to grow, burning homes in mandeville canyon. they are still dropping fire retardant around this home because look how close it is to other structures. there is an entire neighborhood right now being threatened as this home goes up in flames. the flames are threatening more than 12,000 structures, forcing new evacuations in parts of brentwood and the hills of encino and tarzana as firefighters raced to save those homes. we're learning that, sadly, the death toll has risen to 13 in the fires across la. at least 5000 structures have been destroyed with the destruction from the palisades and eaton fires ranking among the worst in california history. and here is where things stand right now. the palisades fire is the largest fire in the area. flames have scorched more than 22,000 acres, and the fire is only 11% contained. tonight,he eaton fire has burned more than 14,000 acres northeast of la and altadena. it's 15% contained tonight. the fire danger expected to remain high tonight as strong winds return to southern california. let's

the fire kind of backing down into mandeville canyon. evacuation orders on the west side of 405 freeway, just to the north of brentwood, and evacuation standby warnings even off to the north o westwood tonight. again, the fire making that run to the north and to the east. but all of this likely to change as we head towards tomorrow and sunday. our top concern for southern california, unfortunately, is the return of some strong, gusty offshore winds. again, the same wind pattern that really helped drive these fires again, will be starting to flare up as we get into sunday around 7 a.m. you could see those wind gusts again from about 40 to 50mph. now around the bay area, we'll have gusty conditions in our mountains, just not as strong as what we're likely to see in southern california. and you can see it's the north bay diablo range in the santaruz mountains, mainly saturday dealing with those winds. and then we'll see the wind speeds locally starting to come down for sunday. right now we're watching mount saint helena. you can see the gus

that was the direction of the winds yesterday, which is why we did the drops in mandeville canyon. the preemptive retardant drops which helped cover the bottom of the canyon. and then in the evening, they were able to do the water drops to extinguish the fire. so that combination really allowed them to have a lot of success there. um, the direction of the winds also helped start to move the fire away from one area and topanga, which i know was the hot spot yesterday. and though we do know if the winds change, that really determines how they have to respond. so we're dealing with the things that are in our control. that's the evacuation orders, making sure that people get out of the way. and that helps keep our first responders safe. so anyone who's under an evacuation order, we are insisting that you leave because that becomes a complication. our first responders just don't have time for as we go into these very dangerous conditions. >> and do you anticipate having to, you know, issue? and i know, you know, there are certain things you just don't know outside your control. i realiz

despite a real fierce fight last night up in mandeville canyon.we have two colleagues with me on fire duty this sunday afternoon. natasha chen julia vargas jones watching the fires as they're moving. but let's start with natasha. they're up in brentwood. she's just up the hill here on the edge of the palisades fire with the latest natasha. >> yeah, bill, in the last few minutes, we've actually seen quite a bit of activity. because down here in the mandeville canyon, they are doing water drops here. we're seeing that aircraft come through one after another. really, and then down to our lower left. once our camera gets down there, you can see that there are some hotspots, smoke rising from the canyon below. there are a lot of homes there. they've dropped retardant there. and so the hope is that the winds will play in favor right now to keep that in check. but as we've all been discussing, the winds are expected to pick back up. and so these few hours right now may be their only reprieve. they are bracing themselves for a lot more difficulty to come.
