let me try to answer mandy's question. why are we down today? i see three clear reasons and you can assign whatever weight you want to any of these. first one, this is a quadruple witching expiration. that's quarterly expiration of stock, index, and futures. we had interesting volume at the open. it's hard to sort that out but that's some kind of influence. second, oil is down 4%. this is a proxy for global growth clearly impacting energy, materials, and industrial stocks today, and finally, the whole fed's message on global growth, and it was pretty down beat here and i think that's really impacting markets participants' expectation of where stocks should be. if you look at the stocks that would be impacted, ge and 3m and caterpillar, your usual names. everything is down about 2% in this particular space. if you look at oil stocks with oil down today, the big names here, particularly in the exploration and production space, the ones most directly impacted, apache, continentals and anadarko, all down 3% to 4%. finally, the 10-year yield down put

hi, diana. >> reporter: hi, mandy. i was getting all these alerts this morning that rates could rise on the jobs number and the stock sell-off. but things settled out since then. lenders don't move rates as quickly as the stock market moves, not by far in any case. the average rate on the popular 30-year fixed has been hovering around 4%. still historically low but we did see the huge spike in mortgage refinance applications last week when rates moved just .8% lower. we're not far from it but that could change this afternoon simply due to the timing. lenders put out their rate sheets mid morning which was right as bond markets were selling off. that would have resulted in their rates being a bit higher than yesterday. but since then, bond markets have bounced back. some lenders in just the last hour have started making rate adjustments lower. so on that note, borrowers though are much more keyed in to these very tiny rate moves. why? because a lot more people now have a lot more home equity to tap in to using a re-fi.

cnbc's mandy drury has more. >> a record of 10 million units. from pre-orders because they're not going on sale until september 25th. at this stage is really is just still pre-orders. but they say the customer response to the new phones, the iphone 6s and s plus have been extremely positive and pre-orders this weekend were very strong. not just here in the united states but also globally. talking of which, china in particular of course is a big market for apple. apparently the wait time for the big screen, the 6s plus there is around three to four weeks and two to three weeks for the 6s. as for shares today, they are higher today. but still off their record high of $130 a share. as for the rest of the market, it is a bit soggy this morning. we're moving lower, as you would imagine, there's quite a lot of nervousness and a number of people just sitting on the sideline and waiting to see what happens until thursday which is the big fed decision. you probably know there is really no street consensus on this so the uncertainty is still hanging over

cnbc's mandy drury is here with an explanation of what we can expect today. >> good morning, jose.r fall in the chinese market overnight. but we have a big day of economic data here at home. it was generally mixed so all in all, pretty hard to get a very clear reading of what it means for this thursday's rate decision. but let me quickly run you through some of the economic data headlines here, jose. one, we got retail sales which were better than expected but after a steep fall in august, the september new york manufacturing saw no bounce back and that's a sign that perhaps some manufacturers are struggling with the strong dollar. we also saw automakers in particular they cut back sharply on their production in the month of august. bottom line, as i say, it is a mixed picture. we'll have to wait for tomorrow's cpi. that's going to be keenly watched by the fed for signs of inflationary pressure. as for stocks, the dow is still about 10% below its record high. the s&p and nasdaq are roughly 8% below their record highs. we're not far from those lofty heights. we're sort of in that wa
