i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping an eye on the commute. first we want to start out with meteorologist kari hall. kari, we're coming off that fire danger yesterday. so how is it looking for us today? >>> it's looking much better today. it will still be hot in some of those inland valleys but we won't have those high winds and that critically low humidity. a look outside in the south bay. we are seeing a clear start to our morning and our temperatures are in the low 60s. you see the trend that heats up fairly quickly today, so it will be another warm one. we should be reaching the low 80s, but we're going to go above that today. we're already at 88 degrees at 1:00 this afternoon. we're looking at some low 90s in antioch today as well as spots like clear lake and ukiah while san francisco will stay in the upper 60s. we'll get a look at the rest of our micro climates and a nice cooldown by the end of the week coming up. mike, you've been keeping an eye on the roads. what's going on right now? >>> well, ri

i'm marcus washington. looks like outside dining it is. >> reporter: and here we are in the nicole valley neighborhood of san francisco. it's the first day in the city that restaurants can start doing indoor dining. they've been serving customers all morning long for breakfast and obviously we will be going to lunch soon. but there are some major adjustments. one, the owner tells us the cas and they're not allowing that. they are requiring customers to instead check in online and wait for a text for when it's their turn to come? customers must wear a mask to get to their table but they can take it off once they are seated. there's a limit of only six people per table and only nine tables are available versus the usual prepandemic. employees must also pass a temperature check to start their shift and wear a mask at all times. the restaurant owner decided against gloves since she believes they are as dirty as the last thing theye practical constantly change out a pair. >> i just really wanted to get out of th

marcus washington is on assignment. nbc bay area's bob redell is in oakland where the man is barricaded inside with his children. bob, where is this unfold? >> reporter: several blocks from here, we're here at 57th in east oakland, the man is in harmon avenue barricaded inside his house with his two young kids, 6 and 8 years old. officers have the home surrounded. s.w.a.t. is out here. oakland police tell us their hostage negotiator is communicating with the man. no word if there's any progress on getting him to surrender peacefully. at 5:30 this morning this man started firing shot at an officer. the officer was not hurt. pd believes he is armed with a rifle and a handgun, the suspect, that is. the man's wife was able to get out and is cooperating with police. residents have been asked to shelter in place. opd has asked neighbors to vaca evacuate. here is what one of them had to say. are you guys okay? what happened in there, miss? >> [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: alameda county sheriff's office is also out here assistin

. >> i am marcus washington. we want to get straight to kris sanchez who is live out in san jose with the latest on this fire. kris, have they started to attack this fire at all? >> reporter: well, absolutely. you saw that glowing line of fire in the nighttime overnight hours, and now the sun is up and what we are seeing is the smoke. you are asking, marcus, if they are fighting the fire, and the answer is yes. we are here with some of the rigs at the base point of the entry point, but we have seen rigs going up the hillside on a dirt road, and crews are here from san jose fire and cal fire. at this point we know 20 acres are burned but the firefighting spokesperson said there's a potential for about 100 acres to burn, so that's a lot more. the good news is it's burning up a hillside that are uninhibited, and there are homes in this area but they seem to be safe. the wind picked up just a little bit before it was absolutely still but now we are feeling a little breeze now that the sun is coming up. vianey has bee

marcus? >> all right, tracie potts in washington for us this morning, thank you. laura? >>> in the meantime, marcus, defense secretary mike esper is calling for a review of the national guard. the role that it took during the black lives matter protests. the review should be back by the end of july. in the meantime new details this morning on california's national guard as well. across the state 8,000 soldiers were activated costing the state nearly $25 million. more than two-thirds of the money spent was focused on los angeles county where 5,500 troops were deployed. in the wake of the protests san francisco mayor london breed is crafting changes for the police department there that will alter the roles that are actually played by those officers. breed wants police to stop responding to noncriminal matters. that means officers will no longer be involved in issues like neighbor disputes. reports on homeless people or school discipline issues. instead trained, unarmed professionals would respond to those calls to limit unnecessary police confrontations. a model like this a

i'm marcus washington.covering in vallejo right now. that's where two people have died in a shooting that left three others injured. >> "today in the bay's" jackie ward has been following the story all morning and joins us now live in vallejo with the brand-new developments for us. jackie? >> reporter: good morning to you both. so five people shot altogether. two of those people died. one of the people shot was a 10-year-old child. here is what we know about the two people who died. they are a 63 and 37-year-old adults. police say this took place on the 100 block of cynthia avenue in north vallejo about 9:50 last night. all of the victims were at a child's birthday party when a group of shooters exited a vehicle and targeted the victims. in addition to the two who died the three other are an adult male and female and one 10-year-old child. police say all three of them are suffering nonlife threatening injuries from gunshot wounds. all victims were from vallejo except the child who they believe in benicia. a
