. >> i'm marcus washington. mike, i know you've got an issue this morning. we've got to talk about the rain already here. so technically is the atmospheric river already here? >> it is, we're just seeing the beginning. the heaviest of the rain is still just offshore. but it will push through. i do have a bit of good news. it looks like the system will move out quickly, which is great when it comes to atmospheric rivers because we don't want to see it sitting over one area for an extended period of time. now, if i zoom this in using our mobile dob ler stormranger, you can see some of the heavier cells moving into san francisco. everywhere else, widespread light rain, so about 4:39, redwood city, you can see it starting to move in through the south bay. the timing looks similar to yesterday as far as when we'll see the heavy rain. we saw it ramping up around 5:00, 6:00, and that's when we'll see again today. it's a system that's going to move out quicker and that will help us out when it comes to rain totals once the system does move out. so because it is pick

. >> i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping an eye on the roads. first, let's talk about the forecast. >> it's still wet as you're driving around the bay area. we had some overnight showers moving through and most of the rain has cleared, but there still may be a couple of spotty showers lingering as we get a look at stormranger. we can see the activity that's been moving through and we're also going to continue to see those rain chances off and on today, a look at the wider view, we can see that the storm systems are still spinning off the coast, that area of low pressure and the swirl of clouds we can see toward the north, and that's going to keep it unsettled for today. so that just means we may see a slight chance of rain, but overall it will be a little dryer compared to yesterday. and we'll see another round of rain as we head into tomorrow, especially early in the morning, about 6:00 we could see another wave of rain passing by. and our temperatures are staying chilly, so there could be some snow on those upper elevations, on hills around th

. >> and i'm marcus washington. the winds from the oncoming bay area storm may pack a punch. >> more rain is expected to fall in areas saturated from the spring of winter storms. let's check in with meteorologist vianey arana. >> we are going to be seeing rain and also wind. the wind will be my biggest concern as we are expecting to see gusty conditions, upwards of 60 plus miles per hour. i want to show you where the majority of the system is. notice, here we are, northern california, and you can see down through southern california, they still have a bit of that moisture tapped. it looks like we will not be the ones getting the impact of that atmospheric river. l.a. will be dealing with flooding concerns through the the afternoon, and high rain rates per hour. as far as we go, we're going to sort of get more of the storm low pressure system that's still going to bring rain but the wind will start to howl and kick up into the afternoon. you can see where some of the rain is already starting to move in, monterey, we

"today in the bay's" bob redell is looking at preparations ahead of the looming atmospheric river. first, let's check in with meteorologist kari hall, leading our coverage. this is the appetizer? >> this is just a quick round of rain coming through this morning. the rest of the day is clearing up. this is ahead of a push of some cooler air that will reinforce what we've been feeling. we're going to see the rain taper off in the north bay in the next couple of hours. it's still a steady downpour for much of the north bay. it is a little heavier and picks up as it moves into the east bay around hayward, oakland, toward danville and just starting to get sprinkles around brentwood. that will continue to fill in around livermore. and then looking at heavier downpours up and down the peninsula. we'll also see some off and on sh

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. a lot to get to. with a look at the forecast. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking more incoming rain. >> and it is going to pack a punch wind-wise as well. we've seen how the winds have impacted us in the past and, unfortunately, it will get very gusty. so let's talk timing, because for today you might have spotted just some light scattered activity. but the bulk of this rain mostly dry through the rest of the evening, it's going to move in overnight into early tuesday morning. wind gusts 20 to 40 miles per hour, wind advisories will be in effect and heavy rain is going to happen right in the middle of your morning commute. so around this time tomorrow we're expecting moderate to heavy downpours at times, especially in the ben lomond area. the highway 17 stretch is going to be tough because we're expecting gusts upwards of 50 plus miles per hour. and then heading into wednesday it turns into showers and a lot of folks were asking about the sierra travel. winter storm watches go into effect starting

. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to get a look at the roads in just a bit. first, we've got to talk about that cold morning we're starting off with today. in some places it is near freezing? >> it's near freezing in parts of the north bay. we'll see if we do get below freezing. the first day of march, we call it meteorological spring and it definitely feels like winter. it is 35 in santa rosa, it is freezing in fairfield, 31 degrees. but for the most part we are seeing temperatures holding above freezing, with some mid to upper 30s, and even low 40s for oakland and san mateo, as well as san francisco. san jose at 41 degrees currently. so it does feel a lot colder because of how much moisture is in the air and that adds to what it feels like to human skin. we're also going to start to see things drying out, but still lingering snow showers for some of our higher elevations around mount hamilton, just a little more snow before we see all of this pushing farther to the south. we are going to have a chance to dry out after all of that rain. we'll talk about how

i am marcus washington. >> i am kris sanchez. laura garcia has the morning off. after the news on the storms, you have the data on the drought. >> yeah, lately we have had so much rain and sierra snow, and we are reaping the benefits of that. take a look at what the drought monitor looked like across the region before the update came out this morning. in northern california, we have a lot of orange which is severe drought in the bay area. we are still in a moderate drought as we get a closer look at the way it looks now, and we are no longer in a moderate drought. it's abnormally dry, and for much of the central sierra, it has been taken out of even abnormally dry conditions. there are still areas where we are seeing at least moderate to severe drought. that's further to the north as well as parts of the southern sierra, but around the bay area we have seen a significant improvement and we are abnormally dry as we look back at our water year. i want to look back around lake county. we're still in a moderate drought there, but it's severe as you head off towards t

i'm marcus washington. in san jose's police officers union appearing in court to answer drug charges. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez. this afternoon, the san jose police officers association office manager will face federal drug charges before a u.s. magistrate judge. the 64-year-old is accused of having 61 drug shipments mailed to her san jose home from foreign countries, then distributing them across the nation by mail. segovia allegedly used the union u.p.s. account and a union email in some of those transactions. the president told me in his only one-on-one interview, that as office manager she had no decisionmaking power and no access to the union's finances. in the federal complaint, investigators say that segovia told them in a voluntary interview that she blamed a woman that she knows as a family friend and housekeeper for making the shipments to her home. she will appear in court at 1:30 this afternoon. >> thanks. >>> it's time to get a look at the forecast. it's going to shape up to be nice. >> we'

. >> i'm marcus washington. this morning we are tracking the next incoming storm as many places are dealing with lingering storm-related problems from the weekend. vianey, you have been tracking this. how soon are we expecting the atmospheric river to roll in? >> it's going to be tricky because people are going to see the rain and think, oh, this is nothing. but the intensity will pick up overnight into tomorrow morning. so a lot of what we've seen in the patterns is exactly that. while people are sleeping the biggest impacts really play a critical role in this, the gusty winds and how much rain we get at once. let's take a closer look at what we showed you at the top of the show, which was the satellite image of the atmospheric river tap and this is going to carry a lot of moisture. we could see anywhere from 3 to 4 inches in parts of the north bay, less than that throughout. this is just in the span of 24 hours. so that's quite a significant amount of rainfall. plus, we've already seen a lot of rain, which is

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. we'll get to the breaking news stories we told you about, but first we want to get a look at the forecast. the weekend is shaping up nicely. >> shaping up nicely, but you're going to have to be careful with the wind. and also those cold temperatures to kick off this friday morning. we're looking at 30s in the north bay for you, santa rosa 38. 39 over in napa. and it is still chilly as we make our way into the tri-valley. dublin 39 degrees there. and we've got 41 for you in redwood city. the temperatures are much cooler than what we were waking up to yesterday, anywhere from about 4 to almost 10 degrees cooler up in the inland valleys. now, this is going to start to warm-up as the morning goes on. look at the little sunshine icons coming back by around 10:00, 12:00. so a beautiful opportunity to enjoy lunch outdoors. just make sure that you are bringing another layer. i'm going to keep an eye on all of your weekend forecast details in a minute. >>> let's take a look at the roads. >> i'

. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at the commute in just a bit. first we've got to talk about the return of that rain. kari, it seems like you're bringing a lot of heat. >> it doesn't matter if i leave, come back, this is the kind of weather going on. and we are still tracking this storm that's coming in, but in the meantime, it's just cold out there. we're under a frost advisory, again, for a lot of these areas that are shaded in blue, starting out this morning temperatures very close to freezing, if not just above, and you may still have some frost to scrape off of the windshield. take a look at gilroy. 31 degrees. 38 in concord and 33 degrees in santa rosa, and then we'll be tracking this storm set to arrive by tomorrow morning. right now we're still seeing the clouds and this area of low pressure that's around the gulf of alaska, that's going to be dipping down and moving into the bay area, bringing heavy rain and wind for tomorrow morning. take a look at the time. this is 5:30 tomorrow morning, we're seeing rain moving through the north bay i

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm kris sanchez. laura garcia is off. we have a big change for express lanes, but we want to start with a look at the forecast because we know more rain is coming. >> we are going to see rain starting tomorrow. we have one more dry day in the forecast as temperatures start out in the upper 30s in parts of the north bay. we're at 37 in mountain view as well and 47 across the bay in hayward, 46 in san francisco. now, heading into the afternoon, it's going to be very much like yesterday where it's nice and sunny, temperatures start to feel a little milder, at least during the middle of the day, reaching into the upper 50s. but i am tracking rain. we are going to see it coming in waves, but there will be a opportunity to get outside. we see it for saturday morning, clearing out for saturday afternoon, and then more spotty rain on sunday. we'll talk more about that coming up. >>> mike, you're still looking pretty calm out there. >> it's friday, so lighter volume of traffic. we expect that for the morning commute. we are lookin

. >> i'm marcus washington. we're going to have a look at your friday forecast coming up in a moment with cynthia, but first we've got to talk about the update to the crash in east bay. >> we had a big closure for 580. we have recovery now. speeds are quickly recovering, but there was quite a backup, a big rig involved in a crash. a couple of vehicles. no major injuries. full closure was to allow them to more quickly clear this crash. it's out of the lanes but there may be activity on the shoulder. there may be slowing for the distraction off of the dublin interchange. heading to the area, although the sensors are still green, we have registered the caltrans road work from the overnight closure. you may see more slowing coming to the area as crews start to clear. again, traffic breaks expected through the area, but very light commute. getting away from the area, eastbound 580, we know a couple of lanes are blocked because of the landslide that happened earlier this week. that was as a result of the storms. we st

. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with the forecast this morning. meteorologist vianey arana is tracking what we can expect this morning. right now, vianey, only lingering showers. >> we still have activity but the weather pattern will settle down as we head into the afternoon and into the evening. but i do want to show you, we're seeing pretty good rotation. what happens is as this rotates it actually feeds in the moisture. so we can expect to keep that rain pretty much through the first half of our morning. stormranger right now, mobile doppler radar, scanning the skies in san carlos, san jose, livermore, pretty widespread through fairfield as well. down through the santa cruz mountains. now, if you live south of the golden gate bridge, it will be a lot slower to clear. we have rain activity that's going to linger, especially for the mountains. here is a closer look at what to expect. we will see breezy to windy conditions, but nowhere near as gusty as yesterday. the gusty winds and the wind warnings have expired as the storm begins to move out. l

i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. this morning we're in another micro climate weather alert, and our team has you covered. chris sanchez is live in the south bay, and mike inouye tracking those driving conditions. >> first we want to get better timing of the storm. vianey arana is tracking it for us. how is it looking? >> we're seeing that the system is starting to move on to, you know, away from the coast and on land. we can see where the biggest impacts of the storm, and yes it's a little bit further south. this is good news for us. unfortunate for southern california, they are going to get the brunt of the atmospheric river. we can't put our guard down because we're going to see the gusty winds move in. you can see santa cruz is about to get some of the rain moved through there. you can see it on satellite and radar. those heavier pockets of rain will intensify in the next two hours as well. catching light to moderate rain through santa rosa, san rafael, fairfield and concord as well, down through the south bay, a

marcus washington has the morning off. >> i'm laura garcia. before we get a look at weather and traffic, let's take a live look outside. we're in the santa cruz mountains off of highway 17 where showers may move through. look at those ominous clouds. kari, gear us up. how will today compare to maybe last weekend's weather? we saw some hail. >> it's going to be about the same, maybe hail in different areas. we're under a winter weather advisory for some mountains in the north bay. the snow may add up to about 2 to 4 inches over the next few hours. and then looking at the waves of rain moving through the north bay but now also starting to approach san francisco and the peninsula, it's going to be off and on today. but mainly hitting this morning. so as we get a closer look we can see that even though it was raining in santa rosa, there may be more showers returning soon, it's really moving into much of napa county and starting to approach solano county. you're starting to see sprinkles. expect the roads to get wet in the nex

i'm marcus washington. >> i'm laura garcia. the whole team is here and we are getting you ready for another potentially dangerous storm. today it should be clear, though? >> yeah, this is our day to make sure we're getting the patio furniture ready, we're clearing the storm drains and making sure everything around the house is prepared for more high winds and heavy rain. right now it's cold, so if you're about to step out the door, we're under a frost advisory for all of the areas shaded in blue. that continues until 9:00 this morning. take a look at our temperatures and what we're feeling right now, 34 degrees in dublin, 33 in mountain view, and it's freezing right now in santa rosa, san martin, gilroy at or below freezing. usually by the end of march we're done with freezing temperatures, but not this year. and, again, this year i'm talking about another rapidly intensifying storm that's going to be coming in. here it is now, farther to the north. it's going to be sliding down the coast and we're going to start to see impacts

i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. well, we have so much to get to this morning, but we want to start with meteorologist vianey arana because she has a look at some warm weekend temperatures. >> you want to skip over the rain. >> let's get to it. >> let's get to the weekend. i agree, though. we do have some warmer temperatures on the way. san jose right now, we have cloudy conditions and let's get to your current temperatures out the door, we are in the 40s to start. and here is what we can expect today and tomorrow. before we get to the weekend, we've got to get through the atmospheric river. unfortunately, it is going to kick up gusty winds right in the middle of your morning commute. so that's going to be sort of a tough transition to go from such a pleasant weekend to rain. winter storm watches will be in effect for the sierra through wednesday morning. and then looking ahead at the seven-day forecast, we do welcome some spring sunshine, and i will have a closer look at your extended forecast and exactly what to ex

. >> i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast. how is it looking? no green in sight today. >> not today. there's a lot going on this weekend and there will be some rain in the mix. we'll talk about that. we take a live look outside in oakland this morning, as you get ready to head out the door. it's definitely jacket weather. we're at 41 degrees in napa. it's 39 right now in santa rosa, 45 in hayward. and it's 45, also, in san jose. take a look at these high temperatures for this afternoon. reaching 66 in livermore, fremont, as well as napa today. going to be a milder one and gets slightly warmer tomorrow. i'll have a look at that when the rain comes in, and what's ahead for next week as the storms continue. that's coming up in a few minutes. >>> mike, you're checking on a car fire in san jose. >> i thought it was just perhaps an overheated car, but it was indeed engulfed in flames. it's quite a distraction as fire crews arrive. north 880 once again back at speed up to just past montague. the distraction has cleared but it will still be on the shoul

i'm gia vang in for laura. >> i'm marcus washington.eorologist vianey arana is in for kari this morning. >> kari is in cabo. >> she's missing the storm. you're dealing with a lot this morning. >> i hope she's enjoying the sunshine. it looks like we could get even more rain. i'll get to that in a second. let's talk about what we're seeing on satellite radar, because we do still have plenty of moisture just behind this. so we're not in the thick of it just yet. it's moving in now and you'll start to see some of these impacts ramp up as we get the rain moving through. but our stormranger is picking up some rain moving through san francisco in through the south bay as well. the rain rates will pick up once the majority of the offshore system starts to move in. here is what to expect. it is picking up speed, so the rain totals are down. that means the flood potential at least goes a little bit down. there's still concern because of how much rain we've already seen the past couple of weeks. the soil could create the potential for landslides.

. >> i'm marcus washington. we want to get you started with everything.eorologist vianey arana has been tracking the storm for us. vianey, how is it looking right now? >> we're starting to see some of those cells get a little stronger and this is where you could see the majority of the system using satellite radar. if i zoom this in using our mobile doppler radar stormranger, you can see some of the heavier rain just off the coast. let's take a closer look to see when this does move in. around campbell, notice at around 6:20 we'll get heavier downpours, 6:05 around boulder creek and alameda around 6:25. the rain you see is going to ramp up some of the rain rates within the next hour or so. what to expect for today, because this system looks like it's moving out rather quickly, the rain totals are down a little bit, which is great because we have the flood concern. the soil is extremely saturated, flood watches are in effect. for monterey county, they are under a flood warning. there is a potential for landslides and also as the winds kick up, around 10:00
