i'm in for marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we will check the traffic. cynthia is in for mike. this morning. kari is in for kari. kari. the forecast. it's going to be a nice weekend. we're looking forward to some cooler temperatures, at least for most of the bay area, as we get a live look outside in dublin. we're getting started with an all clear sky. you may notice it's still a little breezy out there as you're driving to work, and our temperatures in dublin at 8:00 will still be in the upper 50s. and then as we go throughout the day, we'll head for the mid 70s at noon and then some low 80s for the afternoon. pretty nice right? we're going to be up to 80 for a high today in san jose, 85 in martinez and for much of the north bay. we'll see those temperatures in the low to mid 80s and still very hot farther to the north. but we are going to be tracking that and some slightly cooler temperatures for the rest of the weekend. coming up, cynthia is in this morning tracking a crash in the east bay. yeah, we go over to hayward. it was super popular yesterday a

i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's start with a look at what's happening with the traffic. this morning. mike inouye tracking some breaking news for that crash on westbound 80. it's causing some delays. yeah, this is different than the walnut creek crash. you just talked about. so i do have a deadly crash that happened just after 330 this morning. it's tougher to see there are low clouds, but i don't think visibility played a part for the actual drivers. you can see the traffic, the lights moving over the two right lanes of westbound 80 are blocked as you get to ashby avenue, so that is an issue. let me show you on the maps. you can probably tell better west 80. coming down past university, things really bogged down. i think some folks are getting off at university because they heard about the crash. the freeways open, two lanes are blocked. a coroner has to arrive. probably about 530 is my guess from past experience. takes about as long as it does because they call them at 4:00. there's mild slowing now. there w

i'm marcus washington marcus cool washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check in with red hot mike over here just a little bit. oh red hot temperatures expected today. yeah. and it's even going to heat up for parts of the peninsula near the coast. but that's really the only area that feels some milder weather as we take a look at our bright orange sunrise looking over the south bay. and we're waking up and heading out to a nice cool morning. but our valleys will be heating up today. we're talking about highs back in the mid to upper 90s and that continues through the middle of the week. but it will be cooling down on thursday and friday and looks great for our labor day weekend. but here's our highs for today. we're going to be up to 95 in livermore, 98 degrees in concord and santa rosa 93 degrees there. oakland in the low 80s and san francisco in the upper seconds. and mike, you're seeing that fog at the golden gate bridge and chp gives a warning. of course, it's not a surprise for those traveling between the north bay and the city itself.

marcus. all right. alice barr in washington this morning. alice. thank you.t is getting much harder for allstate customers to make it in the bay. allstate is approving the highest rate hike california has seen in years. california department of insurance is allowing the state's six largest home insurer to raise home insurance rates for more than 350,000 policyholders. homeowners insurance could go up by 34%. it is the largest increase by a major insurer in the past three years. an insurance consumer advocate says you should try to find a good agent and do as much comparison shopping as you can. the whopper of an increase. it's bad news of course, for allstate policyholders, because allstate sending you a message. if you can find a better deal, you should go for it. state farm also asking the state to approve a 30% rate hike for california homeowners. we reached out to allstate for a statement, but did not immediately hear back. now to a live look over at sfo. this is where many travelers are set to take off for the labor day weekend. and according to triple a

i'm marcus washington. back to you. all right, marcus, thanks. now to a dam failure and a flooded road, meaning a popular russian river tourist destination will be closed this labor day holiday weekend. a component problem we're told, caused the dam to fail thursday night in guerneville. that led to a water breach and forced the closure of the summer crossing at vacation beach on the russian river in guerneville. the seasonal recreational spot is used for picnics, swimming and fishing. the crossing typically is open through september. so far, no word on when it will reopen. it is nearing the 11th hour to sell the a's coliseum to a private investment group. for years, the site has been co-owned half by the city of oakland and half by the a's. so in two separate deals, the african american sports and entertainment group, or asg, agreed to buy the entire property. the group has agreed to pay the a's $125 million, but alameda county still needs to approve the deal. as for the city of oakland, a's half, there's an even more critical deadline. asg agre

i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. and this is mike inouye. and this is kari hall. she's got a look at our forecast for this tuesday. yeah, it looks pretty good for us for today. maybe slightly warmer in some of the valleys, but we are starting out nice and cool. a live look outside in san francisco with the clouds overhead, and there may be some drizzle at times, but it will be slightly warmer today, tomorrow as well as thursday, and then cooling by the weekend. so we do have a few changes here and there that will mainly be felt away from the bay and the coast. we're looking at a high of 90 today in concord, 85 in napa, and we'll see some upper 80s and low 90s for much of the north bay. well, san francisco will be staying in the 60s, taking it into the day tomorrow. once again, those temperatures warming up a degree or two with upper 80s low 90s for the east bay into the south county. and then on thursday we're going to see a few more of those low 90s in the inland valley. so we'll talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. mike, you have a look at the richmo

this is today in the bay and good morning to you on this tuesday i'm marcus washington.nd i'm laura garcia. a lot to get to this morning. first, mike inouye has been tracking some breaking news that's been happening overnight on the bay bridge. it happened about 2:00 in the morning. so it's been there for a while. let's take you to see the video. that was the low the lower deck getting out of san francisco. folks were leaving the bay bridge. chp vehicle apparently caught fire. still do not know what caused the fire. we do know there were no injuries reported. that's the good news. that cruiser burns out and it was blocking the three. right lanes until 456. this morning. see the flashing lights? all the cruisers and tow trucks that were on scene. let's get a look now at the map system where we have the camera trained over at that same area. and look, there are some flares right here. but at 456 i saw a fleet of vehicles which must have included that flatbed tow truck clear from behind that stanchion there on the anchorage and head out toward treasure island. and so over t

i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. let's get you caught up with that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we have in store and the air quality. i know we've got those fires still burning. how is that looking for us? as far as our near surface smoke, it is moderate. so it hasn't turned really unhealthy for us as we are seeing much more of a wind coming onshore. and a lot of the fires are farther off. towards the east, we have a new one burning over el dorado county, and much of that smoke is blowing over towards south lake tahoe, and we also see the park fire that continues and much of that smoke is also blowing away from the bay area but still in this weather setup, we do see some drifts of smoke coming in, but it is a little bit higher up and we just basically see it not affecting as much of the air quality, but it will still be hot in the valleys today, so i'll be tracking air quality and also weekend events coming up. thank you very much. it is 531 in new overnight. two people are in the

i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia.long as it starts on monday with a lot of coffee for me. you think it's going to be an iced coffee by the end of the day? yes. it's going to heat up so fast. and we're going from a nice, mild morning to a really hot afternoon. and usually when those temperatures ramp up, we start to see an impact to our air quality. and so that's what we're expecting over the next couple of days. a little bit more haze and ozone. and we just want to do what we can to try to reduce what we're putting out there. our air quality outlook is still moderate for the coast and the bay. the east bay will be moderate. good elsewhere, but look at these high temperatures. so we're going from being able to enjoy more time outside to now maybe going inside for a little bit more and using that air conditioning as our temperatures today will hit 91 in santa rosa and napa. we'll reach a high of 96 in concord and 88 in san jose. tomorrow slightly hotter for those inland valleys, and we may see a couple of triple digits

i'm marcus washington. we'll get a check in with kari in just a moment with a look at that forecast. but first we want to go over to mike inouye. right now because, mike, i know you're tracking that crash in the south bay. yeah exactly. look, this is the scene. or just minutes ago, camden avenue, a major roadway in san jose, is closed at crouser. folks familiar with the area know there's a shell station there. there's a taco bell. they can't access that intersection because of this crash and the power line down. now, the good news, or the less bad news, no major injuries, so that's good news. the bad news is that those power lines down, they have to be restrung. and we're told they will not reopen this intersection until that has happened. and we'll look at the map where this is. this is again camden avenue at crouser. two major roadways south of highway 85. some folks may be heading to highway 85, and that will be a problem if you're heading off of blossom hill, you can't go north to 85 through that inters

i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast. meteorologist kari hall, of course. been tracking what we can expect coming up. i think a nice weekend. it was a great weekend across the bay area, and it's going to be pretty much the same today. we're starting out with some low clouds over san francisco, some drizzle at times. and then eventually it's going to clear up. but right now we're in the 50s across much of the bay area. even some low 50s in some spots. we're at 53 in san mateo and mid 50s for much of the north bay, upper 50s for the east bay into the afternoon. take a look at these highs reaching into the 70s for the most part for parts of the east bay down to san jose in san francisco to be in the upper 60s and low 80s in the north bay now, mike, someone in san jose might be out of gas. yeah, we hear that. there's a car struggling right here. north 680 right around mckee. the report comes in to chp saying it's stopping and going. stopping and going. it looks like they might be just on the last bit of fumes here getting off

and i'm marcus washington. mike is going to have a look at that commute coming up in just a bit.ut let's talk about that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect out there today. and it's going to be another nice one, but much cooler. and we are going to see a drop in temperatures for a couple of days. even though we're starting out mild, we're right now in the low 60s from san jose to palo alto to walnut creek and upper 50s in san francisco, already a breezy wind picking up there as we go throughout today, we are going to see those temperatures about ten degrees lower than yesterday. so we're looking at a high of 75 degrees in san jose, 78 degrees in morgan hill, and for much of the east bay, some mid to upper 70s only 80 in concord as well as antioch, while oakland will see a high of 71 and will be in the low 60s for half moon bay, with mid 70s for redwood city and san francisco. we're back to the 60s, so we'll talk about what's ahead in a few minutes. mike takes us to the carquinez bridge. yeah, we'll give you a big view of contra cos

i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with a look at the forecast. top of the morning to meteorologist kari hall, tracking what we can expect. it's going to be another really nice day across the bay area. starting out cool and comfortably warm across much of the bay area for the afternoon. and we're going to see those temperatures as you step out within the next few minutes. in the 50s and 60s. we're at 62 right now in walnut creek, while palo alto is at 59. happy first day of school for the kids in san mateo. it's going to be partly cloudy at drop off time, and they may be wearing the jacket even when you pick them up, it will be in the upper 60s there, but nice and sunny. overall a comfortable day and our temperatures range from 60s to all the way up to 92 degrees. and we'll see that in vacaville and in fairfield later today. mike, you have a concern for some drivers crossing over the bay. yeah. if you're using the richmond-san rafael bridge, i'm watching for any crews coming across. haven't seen any flashing lights coming toward us, but they would

yes, i'm laura garcia, and i'm marcus washington. well, within the past hour, law enforcement announcing a takedown of a major organized theft ring which targeted cannabis dispensaries. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from the east bay, where thieves were based. and, bob, what do you know about this crackdown? well, good morning to you, laura. and marcus. police say that most, if not all of the 22 suspects were members of gangs in oakland who stole a combined roughly thousand pounds of cannabis over a period of several months, hitting several dispensaries in nine counties here in northern california and throughout the rest of the state. attorney general rob bonta, along with oakland police and the santa cruz county sheriff's office. they just spoke at a news conference in santa cruz county. that's where half the incidents took place. and that's where the prosecution of those individuals will take place as a result. here are the numbers. this was known as operation sticky fingers captured 22 suspects who have been charged with

i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. a brand new east bay superintendent will be working to move his district forward as the new school year starts. nbc bay area's bob redell is tracking the major challenges he's facing as students are returning to the classroom today. the biggest challenge facing the san ramon valley unified school district. it's a similar challenge. other districts are experiencing a future budget shortfall. specifically here, we're talking about $16.5 million. we're outside coyote creek here in san ramon, where moms and dads just dropped off their sons and daughters for the start of the new school year. one mom tells us she's excited about a new program here at coyote creek that will allow the performing arts teacher to interact with every student in every classroom. this will include her son. before last year, it was just with select grades, so not every student. we also spoke with the new superintendent, cj cammack, who was out here greeting students. we spoke to him about that looming budget defici

i'm marcus washington. we begin this midday with some breaking news for you. out of the east bay. that's where there is a major traffic alert along northbound 680. mike inouye is tracking that backup. and, mike, you have some alternative routes for folks. yeah, i do. first, let's show folks why northbound 680 is still closed. this was sent out by chp dublin area just about ten 1010 11 minutes after 10:00. this morning where they continued the closures since before 4:00. that overhead sign was clipped by one of the crew from the overnight paving project in the northbound direction, so they had to remove that sign after they determined that it had been damaged. we're looking at a closure that continues. let's come out to the maps where we'll show you northbound 680 is closed. it was closed basically at stoneridge for quite some time. and then it looks like the traffic is backed up a bit. they may have moved them further back to the las positas area, but whatever the case, we do see a lot of folks that were getting off at bernal. that's one of your alternates because stone ridge is n

and i'm marcus washington. a lot to get to this half hour. first happening right now san francisco courtroom. dozens of criminal cases are being dismissed. now, this comes after a recent federal appeals court ruled tied to the legal delays, which sprang out during the covid pandemic. nbc bay area's ginger conejero saab joins us in san francisco. and, ginger, we just you just got reaction from the public defender's office. i understand within the hour. that is correct, laura. you know, the public defender's office saying that this is a very rare occurrence to have a mass dismissal of cases like this. there are 70 misdemeanor cases that will be dismissed today in san francisco court. now, the public defender's office, as well as the district attorney's office, have both gone on record to say that the court is to blame because they did not try cases in a timely manner. the district attorney's office releasing a statement that says in part, quote, the courts decisions to continue cases, past statutory deadlines for trial deprived defendants of th

thanks for joining us for our midday newscast i'm marcus washington. well, we begin with the new details in that late night shooting in oakland, a short time ago, police answered, actually, actually announced the victim has died. now, i want to show you some video. this is from citizen app of that shooting scene. it happened about 11 p.m. on east oakland. this is on macarthur boulevard near 90th avenue. that victim has not yet been identified. now, this is actually the second of two deadly shootings last night in oakland. in the first case, police believe multiple people were shot. police plan to address both cases. a short time from now, as nbc bay area's bob redell reports oakland mayor sheng thao. she will tackle the issue later tonight in a town hall meeting. oakland mayor sheng thao will be holding five of these town halls with the chiefs of her police and fire departments, among other city leaders, to answer questions from oaklanders about what the city is doing to tamp down on crime, which is obviously an ongoing problem. just last nigh, another

i'm marcus washington. and i'm laura garcia. let's start out with that breaking news out of the east bay. parents on alert following an incident at hayward high school. nbc bay area's velena jones is live for us there on campus and velena, what have you learned from school leaders? what are they saying here? well, marcus and laura, we're learning that there are three students involved in this incident that has led to increased security here on campus. we are here on the site of the campus. we haven't seen too much extra security at this moment. but we do know that district officials say extra staff and security officers are on hand today after that incident, that happened yesterday. now we're also learning that a letter was sent to parents about what exactly happened. it confirms an incident involving what the district says involved a small handful of students yesterday. now, a spokesperson just moments ago from the district tells us that three students were involved in an altercation yesterday afternoon. one of those students w
