marjorie margolis, thank you. stay safe on the campaign trail. appreciate you coming in this morning. we'll be watch being closely. >> thank you. >> turning now to big news this morning in washington. for the first time ever the department of justice is filing criminal charges against a state actor in china for cyber crimes. in other words, the u.s. is accusing formally the chinese government and specific officials of chinese government of using military and intelligence facilities to steal secrets from the u.s. economy. often times it is nonstate actors engaged in this issue as well. let's turn to pete williams to get the latest details on these criminal charges. pete, it is pretty clear. this time the u.s. -- no more diplomacy. for years they tried to deal with it on a diplomatic level but sounds like they ran into a wall. >> i'm sure they'll continue with diplomatic efforts but what we hear from the attorney general and the fbi is for the first time the u.s. is accusing state actors, as they say, officials of the chinese government, specifical

it's really a personal event because chelsea is married to marjorie margolies' son. and so the big question in this race has been how much do you use the clintons? have you used them too much? do you use them too little? take a look at what margegy margolies told me. >> we always knew that if they came in too much, we would be blamed for their coming in too much. if they didn't come in enough, people would say they didn't come in enough. you're kind of damned if you do and damned if you don't. >> but tonight, hillary clinton will be raising an awful lot of money for her. bill clinton has done it as well. she's used the clintons in an ad in the district. she's in a tight four-way primary. it's going to be a squeaker. this is a seat she lost 20 years ago when she cast a vote to give bill clinton his economic plan. a little bit of redemption. >> and there are a lot of democrats running for the house. never mind will she or won't she. who kind of wish the clintons had more than one child, they could get their kid married so that would entice the clintons to come campaign

marjorie margolies' son is married to chelsea clinton. bi bill clinton, frankly, already owed marjorie margolies big time even before they became related by marriage. but now that marjorie margolies wants back into congress she is one of the only, if not the only democratic congressional in the country who can call on former president bill clinton to campaign actively for her to try to win her seat. so that's not the whole context of the primary for the 13th congressional district, democratic primary in pennsylvania tonight but it is some of the the context. the polls close in pennsylvania tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern. at this point there's 25% of precincts counting. she is running second but, again, one-fourth of the precincts counted there. brendan boyle is out front. a four-way primary considered hard fought all along. that's on the democratic side. on the republican side a couple of things to watch there. one is a tea party challenge to a republican congressman who you might not have heard of. bill shuster. the reason this race has na

margolis lost despite getting some powerful support from her inlaws, hillary and bill clinton. joining me is the nominee from the 13th district. brendan boyle. congratulations to you. >> thanks, chuck. good to be with you. >> is it as simple as local p l politics trump national politics, generational? what do you believe helped you overcome someone who had a lot of ties and help from very popular people in your district, the clintons? >> it wasn't just one or two things the local aspect it have helped. also i focused on income inequality. we were systematic about it from beginning to end. and as unsexy as it may sound, good old fashioned hard work. i spent 13 months, myself, my brother is also a state representative, knocking on doors literally. we were able to show you could run a grass roots campaign. i stood on my feet all 13 hours yesterday at a polling location yesterday in a neighborhood of philadelphia asking people for their vote and they appreciated that i was in their face that, i showed up before, that they thought that i shared their values and would fight for them

>> no. >> reporter: after four decades in the public eye, margolies knows how to stay on message. >>d she has made up her mind and i take her at her word. >> reporter: so? >> she has said she's making up her mind and i take her at her word. she has said -- >> gloria's joining us now from washington. so how does the race tomorrow shape up? is she going to win? what's it look like? >> well, you know, there's a four-way democratic primary. as we said in the piece, this is now a democratic seat, not a largely republican seat. whoever wins the democratic novemb nomination, sort of the odds-on favorite. she does have some stiff competition. the poles are kind of unreliable. as you know. she seems to be up by a handful of points. she's got one main challenger. she is not a shoo-in by any stretch. that is why she's had to call in the big guns, which are the clintons. >> good work, gloria. good work on that report. you know what else is even more important, gloria borger received an honorary degree from her alma mater colgate university this weekend, gave the commencement address. there you a

margolis is also chelsea clinton's mother-in-law. from the big dog, bill clinton, who also took aim at karl rove for suggesting that mrs. clinton might have suffered brain damage after a 2012 fall. >> first they said she faked her concussion. and now they say she's auditioning for a part on "the walking dead." now they say she's really got brain damage. >> do you think they're trying to -- >> if she does, then i must be in really tough shape because she's still quicker than i am. >> clinton went on to say those comments were just the beginning, leading to further speculation about a 2016 presidential run. >>> all right, the immigration debate heating up, sparked by a new report that says more than 36,000 convicted criminals were released by immigration officials last year. among them, 193 convicted killers and more than 400 men convicted of sexual assault. this comes as the white house conducts a review of deportation practices with the goal of making them more humane. critics, including the group that conducted this report, say that

emily's list, a pro-choice group a titanic force within democratic politics, you've got marjorie margolies and allyson schwartz we assumed would be the favorite. looks like she'll come short to tom wolf. >> poured $10 million? a state like pennsylvania. the philadelphia media market is so dominant in a democratic primary because of where the votes are. >> but that's her base, philadelphia. >> she's not run a terribly good campaign. one of my colleagues colby from -- worked in allentown, quoted ed rendell who we've had on many times, saying allyson schwartz ran a bad campaign, tom wolf ran a good campaign. i think schwartz will come up short. that's something to look at. whoever the democratic nominee is against tom corbett, the current incumbent governor in pennsylvania, has to be sitting pretty. his numbers are just in terrible shape. >> there are going to be some people questioning emily's list if margolies -- >> two women i think we expected to win. >> chuck todd, you talked about the legacies, you have a strong run by michelle nunn. jason carter has had problems along the way. >> he ha

last night former congresswoman marjorie margolies lost her race by a 2-1 margin. her son married chelsea clinton in 2010. however, she served one term in congress in the 90s but lost re-election after voting for president clinton's budget. they helped fundraise in her come back attempt. her opponent is brendan boil who will now head to the general election in a district that is heavily favored for democrats. >>> so it's been a really good week for advocates of marriage equality. pennsylvania is the latest state to overturn a gay marriage ban after a federal judge declared it to be unconstitutional. republican governor tom corbin haend said whether he'll appeal this ruling. however, couples gathered out site city halls across the state to celebrate the decision. official officials predicted an onslaught of marriage applications for today. pennsylvania follows a rulings in oregon overturning a marriage equality ban. there are 29 states that allow for same sex marriage or have struck down a ban. 44% of the u.s. population now lives in a state that has marge equality.
