marianne favro, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, marianne. >>> gruesome new information tonight in the case of a man who kidnapped a san diego county teenager last week. court papers indicate prior to setting his home on fire james dimaggio tortured the girl's mother and 8-year-old brother and then killed them. he also shot the family dog. information in a warrant also shows dimaggio exchanged 13 phone calls with the 16-year-old girl in the hours before her kidnapping. she didn't know her mother and brother were killed until after her rescue. a family spokesman believes dimaggio intended to kill the girl. the "l.a. times" reports in an eerie coincidence the suspect's own father suffered a breakdown and committed suicide after he too became obsessed with a 16-year-old girl. >>> final preparations are under way to imploez a landmark building in hayward. at 9:00 saturday morning demolition crews are set to destroy the 13-story warren hall on the cal state east bay campus. the 42-year-old campus building was deemed seismically unsafe. demolition experts are placing 400 pounds of explosives at m

marianne favro is live with the latest. >> reporter: you can see the thick clouds of smoke behind me. fire crews say that they don't think they will be able to contain this fire until september 10 and that is if everything goes their way. firefighters on the front lines say the rim fire is a beast, stubborn and unpredictable and that's just the beginning of the challenges they face. >> rugged terrain, heat, very, very dry fields. our people tell us they have never seen fuel this dry. >> reporter: the fire has scorched 293 square miles. crews are using dozers to clear out brush and trees fuelling the flames and to cut containment lines. more than 4,000 firefighters have joined the effort including dozens from the bay area. >> we have a strike team here with me that consists of personnel and fire apparatus from all over santa clara county. >> reporter: including palo alto. firefighters are concerned about these clouds called convection column that can spew hot debris from the fire miles ahead of the containment lines. the fire is 23% contained but still threatening more than 4,000 homes

nbc bay area's marianne favro is near the scene. police are investigating a second hit-and-run in the same area. >> reporter: they are trying to determine if the two cases are linked. carlton ford was killed here on allen rock avenue on saturday night and now chp needs your help finding the driver and tonight they have much more detail about the suspect vehicle. today a chp investigator talked to neighbors to try to find the driver who hit a man and then drove off here in san jose. the victim was walking near harriet avenue saturday night when witnesses say a truck slammed into him, killing him. >> he was a 61-year-old gentleman, carlton ford. he was transported to regional medical center where he was pronounced deceased that evening after the collision. >> reporter: investigators describe the suspect's vehicle as a 1990s ford truck tan or white with oversized tires. the truck had a red stripe on the hood and a damaged front headlight. witnesses say the victim lived in the neighborhood and that carlton ford walked with his cane to t

marianne favro is live in tuolumne city. there is a lot of work ahead. >> reporter: there is a lot of work. i received good news. the fire is at 30% containment. that sup from 23% this morning. so firefighters are definitely making some progress. i'm here now at the base camp for more than 4,000 firefighters battling this stubborn fire and crews may be here a while. the fire is not expected to be contained until september 10th. firefighters are making progress attacking the flames. but the rim fire is still just 23% contained. teams used bulldozers to stop the flames from heading toward homes. >> remove all the fuel so the fire can't burn in and jump the line. >> reporter: the fire scorched 293 square miles including old-growth forest. firefighters are keeping an eye on the convection column in the sky. >> materials will be drawn up into this column and once they hit a higher altitude where the winds begin to influence differently than down here, it can drop out burning materials, sometimes out of our containment lines. >> r

marianne favro has more on that. and i understand this case is unusual? >> reporter: it certainly is, what makes it unusual is that the woman was young and healthy and was diagnosed with west nile meningitis which is extremely rare. she was hospitalized a couple days and is now back at work. >> reporter: jason is concerned about west nile virus. >> my concern is, is it affecting certain areas, you know, near the creek. we live by a creek over here. >> reporter: he plans to get protective netting for the stroller now that santa clara county reported its first case of human west nile this year, a woman in her 30s. >> this is a young woman and she had west nile meningitis which is a little bit less common than west nile fever. and she had a brief hospitalization and is now recovered and back to work. >> reporter: west nile meningitis is rare, making up less than 1% of all west nile cases. at santa clara county victor control, technicians are testing dead birds to see if they have the virus, 33 birds have tested positive and technicians have traps in a one-mi

marianne favro joins us. the chp is also investigating a second hit-and-run in that same area. could it be linked? >> reporter: well it is a very real possibility. and right now investigators are trying to get to the bottom of that question. 61 year old carlton ford was hit and killed here on saturday night. and now investigators are trying to look for the truck drover and the truck involved in that accident. it was here near alan rock a 61 year old man was hit by a truck and killed saturday. chp officers say the driver never stopped. today investigators talked to neighbors in an effort to try to track down the truck driver. the victim is 61 year old carlton ford. neighbors say he lived nearby. christine says she often saw him using a cain to walk to the library. >> he would always say high. he would always just gesture, and he was just very polite. he was no harm to nobody. and it just, it's hard. >> reporter: this woman who asked us not to show her face on camera said she saw the accident and was stunned to see the truck driver take off. >> didn't stop, he didn't stop at all.

reporting live, marianne favreau, nbc bay area news. >>> a big scare at santa clara superior court. a suspicious package was found at the courthouse in san jose. the administration building and family courthouse were evacuated with streets in the area were shut down while authorities scoured the building and within an hour the area kwus given all-clear. the court said the activities at park center plaza were cancelled for the day but all other operations were carried on. >>> a casino tour bus overturned on interstate 210 in los angeles. the bus driver swerved and braked hard to avoid a car changing lanes. the front windows were knocked out and the bus land down an embankment. most of the people on board had cuts and bruises. the charter company says the bus was on its way to the san manuel indian bingo. all of the 210 was shut down so the emergency helicopters could land. traffic was backed up for miles. the chp opened up the lanes about an hour later. >>> the search is called off for the missing service dog belonging to a south bay veteran. the dog was hit and killed by a car. jeff
