. >> marianne favro joins us in corralitos with the latest. marianne? >> reporter: well, dozens of neighbors use that bridge to get to their homes, and now they're worried about being trapped. the entire bridge came crashing down early this morning around 6:00. fortunately no one was hurt, but it was a close call for one resident who told us he drove over the bridge minutes before it went down. homeowners must now rely on another bridge miles away, and they fear it may wash out, too. >> it would be 50 homes, more or less, that would be without the ability to exit. >> reporter: heavy rain sent walls of saturated soil into the raging creek near watsonville, high winds toppled huge trees closing roads. the uvas creek near morgan hill is now a raging river with many roads flooded, and this shows major flooding in residential neighborhoods. the streets are submerged and neighbors cannot drive out. in corralitos, one of the big concerns the bridge also took out gas power to that area and most of those homes rely on gas in order to heat their homes. reporting

marianne favro took a look today. she learned there could be warning signs that would give you a little bit of advanced warning to figure out if the tree is going to go. she joins us. marianne? >> reporter: a huge redwood tree came crashing down here. you can see where crews have been working to remove it. and over here the tree slammed into this rv destroying it. we talked to arborists today and they say while trees may come down in a storm without any notice, there are some specific things to look out for that could give you advanced warning. as crews repair power lines taken out by 100-foot-tall redwood tree, this woman remembers watching the hot wires in front of her home. >> we could see the sparks in the windows. >> reporter: the tree missed her campbell home but came smack down on her rv destroying it. >> like losing your little home, all the memories in there. >> reporter: another redwood came crashing down slamming into the roof of a home and it wasn't the only one. in the past week nine redwoods came down in

marianne, what do we have? >> reporter: i'm here on the cabrillo highway, and the sheriff confirmed this is actually a nursery where this took place and that three people were shot and killed, and they were shot and killed in front of children. there are people who work here, who also live here as well with their families. she said that this happened after the kids had already gotten out of school. so we don't know yet how many children were actually here, but we have confirmed that children did, in fact, witness this horrific shooting. now, the sheriff also said that it appears that the man who turned himself in for these shootings did, in fact, work at either this nursery or the other crime scene, which is also a nursery. she did say that that is a high possibility. they're still working to confirm that. no word on how long he's worked here. now, in the last 20 minutes, what's interesting is that we have actually seen workers come out of here. they did not want to talk to us. we've also seen some people come

marianne fach row joins us now with the very latest. >> reporter: we learned zhao is eligible for the death penalty. the hearing only lasted about four minutes. zhao did not enter a plea but did exhibit unusual behavior. take a look at this. he shielded his face with a piece of paper. he was shackled at his waist and spoke mandarin. he's charged with murdering seven people in half moon bay at two different locations and attempting to kill an eighth person. he also faces additional charges for multiple murders and using a gun. the d.a. explained what might be ahead. >> the defendant's punishment if convicted on these charges could be life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty making that decision is something that will take place over the course of the next many, many months. >> reporter: do you's formal arraignment was postponed until february 16th. he was assigned two attorneys from the county's private defender program. even though sources close to the investigation say zhao claimed responsibility for the shootings to investigators, the d.a. says he's expecting the
