our marianne favro has been working on the story since we learned about it.rianne, can you go ahead and start telling us what exactly happened? >> reporter: yes, the covid outbreak is impacting the clerk's office. they didn't have enough staff to keep the office open. so it was closed today and will remain closed tomorrow. and they hope that the office will reopen on monday. of course, the timing was bad because there were so many people who were also off on vacation this week that they simply didn't have enough people to backfill. that's why they had to shut down today. >> sure, speaking of today's shutdown, who exactly is being ■@ >> reporter: the closure is only impacting the clerk's office. it does not impact scheduled court cases and divorces or custody battles, et cetera, already scheduled in court. i did talk to one man who showed up to get court documents from the court clerk's office, and he was very frustrated because they were closed. he said he really needed those documents to prepare for a hearing on monday. we did run to a few frustrated people.

"today in the bay's" marianne favro on why the company may be slashing those jobs. >> reporter: meta based in menlo park is poised to lay off thousands of employees this week. according to "the wall street journal." it would be the first major cuts in the company's 18-year history. last months meta ceo mark zuckerberg hinted at the layoffs during an earnings call when he said, quote, in 2023 we're going to focus our investments on a small number of high-priority growth areas. that means some teams will grow meaningfully but most other teams will stay flat or shrink over the next year. one problem is zuckerberg invested $10 billion in the metaverse concept which is still in its early stages and not bringing in major revenue. >> i think he's realized his broader vision is not going to pay off in the short term. and he's going to have to regroup in the context of what projects he's going to put money into. and that will bring money into the company faster. >> reporter: earnings are bleak. meta is the worst performer this year with shares down roughly 73% over the past year. san jose sta

marianne favro, "today in the bay." >>> a south bay police officer is recovering after a traffic stop took a dangerous turn. it happened around midnight friday night into saturday morning. san jose police say a pair of officers stopped two drivers for speeding. the officer said it seemed like they were racing. police say during the stop, five people in the two cars became aggressive and attacked the officers. one officer was hit in the face, but is expected to be okay. when backup arrived, police arrested these five people. they're facing a range of charges, including assault and interfering with police. >>> hundreds of people in san jose took to the streets yesterday fighting for safer streets after the death of a young boy on his way to school. they marched down cadillac drive in honor of 8-year-old jacob, killed near castlemont elementary school in september. he and his babysitter were in the crosswalk when a driver hit them, killing jacob. police say the driver did stay at the scene. they don't think alcohol nor drugs were factors. still, marchers yesterday argued that they deserv
