mary mary sweeney and joshua hill agreed to have their daughter placed in to into protective custody while they were figuring out who should have alternate custody over two year old alexandria now the family is mourning the loss of their baby girl and looking for answers as to how this horrible tragedy could have ever happened mary sweeney joined me earlier today to tell me her story and i first asked her when and why protective services took their daughter away well it all started with. josh and i getting into an argument you know as simple parents do and kind of escalated from there he asked his sister for advice and she unexpectedly showed up at the house our apartment and she had gotten furious with her brother with joshua and. there was a lot of anger and a lot of. just. unhappiness at that at that moment and. so his sister wanted up call and c.p.s. due to josh is anger issue and just how things were panning out at that moment and because i was in mother of alexandria i was part of the situation and it was unfortunate. it was due to marijuana use i did admit that i smoked marijuana in the past and i had actually quit at that time before c.p.s. got involved. but apparently that wasn't enough. josh had said that i was not allowed to be with alexandria alone. due to my grandma seizures which i have no document

mary ojakian learned that their 21-year-old son adam a student at uc-davis died by suicide. >> most people ask the question, why? >> reporter: what vic and mary learned after talking with adam's friends and professors was that for the first time adam was dealing with depression. >> he did show some signs but nobody had ever been trained to recognize these thing. >> reporter: not adam, his friends or teachers knew enough to get him the help that was available. suicide is the second leading cause of death among college aged students and 70% don't seek treatment. vic and maryere was a lack of awareness of. people didn't want to talk about mental illness and there had been cutbacks. >> a lot of campuses were cutting back on things and the first thing they decide to cut back on is their mental health services. >> reporter: so the ojakians lobbied for millions of dollars through a statewide initiative so that all uc, state and community colleges could expand student mental health services. >> vic and mary have made talking about mental health an okay thing to do. >> reporter: stephanie welch oversees the state student mental health program. >> we want to make sure that we provide resources, education, that we teach people about the warning signs and that people know that suicide is preventable. >> reporter: in santa clara county, the ojakians helped create a countywide strategic plan for suicide prevention. and when a palo alto school experienced a rash of suicides, they work on a prevention program that's being adopted by school districts around the state to
