anderson. >> thank you. retired spider marks joins me now. what do you make, first of all, general marks, on the second strike group of the gerald ford? >> he stated it quite frankly. it's a show of force intended for iran, stay clear. we have significant firepower and capabilities when you dig inside what one of those carrier battle groups have. it's subsurface, lots of air capability and linkage into air defense and strike capabilities coordinated with the israelis. >> in terms of this new phase as israel is calling it, beyond a ground incursion we've been talking about for days now, what else could that entail? >> well, clearly what i think is going to happen is when the israelis make the decision -- let's assume they're going into gaza, when that decision is made, you will see a simultaneous penetration from the north down to probably the wadi gaza, which kind of bisects gaza. and then from the east to the west a penetration as well to the mediterranean, so you will have israeli forces coming and joining each other as quickly as possible.

anderson in tel-aviv. >>> with us now is retired lieutenant mark hurling, who has spent a lot of time in israel.eneral, one of the questions we have is what would a ground invasion of gaza, i have a map here of gaza, what would that look like? there is some history here. in 2014 there was a 50-day conflict after hamas kidnapped three israeli teens in the west bank, there was 50 days of fighting, including a ground incursion into gaza, including fighting right here near gaza city. what have we seen in the past and how would that instruct what happens now? >> john, it's a great intro. you citing the operation protective edge which took place in 2014. as you said, it took 50 days, and during that period, israel mobilized 75,000 soldiers compare that to today. in that operation, the idf attacked on three axis, two in the north, one in the center and one in the south of gaza. it was three divisions of troops, a joint operation, air, land and sea. israel lost 66 soldiers and six civilians. and the, you know, estimated the palestinians lost 2,100 dead. now that was an estimate. we've already seen those

mark kelly, thank you so much. >> thank you. >> reporter: appreciate it. anderson, back to you. >> reporter: dana, thanks. i want to bring in nic robertson who is in sderot. we talked to him a short time ago. first of all, talk about what you have been seeing, i want to talk about the south of gaza. >> reporter: yeah. you're probably hearing it, anderson, that pickup in artillery. we're in the outgoing artillery going into gaza at the moment. we're hearing some very loud detonations of artillery impacts inside gaza. you can literally hear, from where we stand, hear the shells whistling before that huge impact. that suggests to me that the impacts are not too deep from where we stand into gaza. we're a mile from the border. so these are perhaps hitting in that -- in that border area. very hard to tell specifically, but definitely an uptick in the last 30 or 40 artillery strokes going into gaza. >> reporter: let me ask you, over the last week that you have been there, how common is artillery fire as opposed to other forms of bombing in gaza? >> reporter: it is relatively common. it cycles up and cycles down

rising uh death tolls past the 6,500 mark thousands of those have been children, women and children, of course bearing the brunt of the israeli attacks. mr. anderson, when when we're going over those figures, when we're going over the method that the israelis are inflicting this type of of suffering against the palestinians, choking off the besieged gaza strip, totally from uh the entire world, one has to think about the issue of accountability. has to be accountability, there has to be consequences with regards to the actions of the israeles, killing women and children, attacking schools, attacking hospitals, attacking even run um shelters, so uh, will we see that accountability, how will we see um, any accountability, and and given the support that the united states gives to the israelis, how can this status quo ever change? uh, by an overthrow of the israeli regime. "if there were an overthrow of the israeli regime, we might see that sort of accountability, that's typically what happens, isn't it? that the losers in a major conflict uh, often held to account, um, but in this case it it does require the overthrow of a regime which has powerful s

mark meadows. paula reid joins us now from washington with that. what is the latest? >> reporter: anderson massive development in the special counsel's investigation we previously reported here at cnn meadows had testified before a grand jury but now we're learning more about what he reportedly has told investigators, now according to reports he told investigators that in the weeks following the 2020 election, he says he told trump that these claims of widespread voter fraud were baseless, and he told investigators that he believed trump was being, quote, dishonest with the public when claiming there was voter fraud and he also said that he had never seen any evidence of fraud that would have kept now president joe biden from the white house and agreed with did i assessment that this was the most secured election in u.s. history. anderson, this is a huge break of course from trump's public rhetoric about the election but also from what meadows has said publicly including in his own book and reportedly investigators were quite interested in talking to meadows about whether he believes sol o

anderson cooper 360." we'll be watching. thank you. right now, i want to bring in mark, a senior adviser to the israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. thanks so much, mark, for joining us. what can you tell us about prime minister netanyahu's meeting today with president biden? it was behind closed doors. are the prime minister and the president on the same page about israel's war against hamas and its humanitarian responsibilities? >> my impression of the discussions is the americans do understand that hamas has to be dismantled. that there has to be a new reality in gaza. that the situation up until now is simply unsustainable. that we cannot expect israelis to live next to this terrorist enclave dominated by hamas. who have exposed itself for all its brutality for everyone to see and as you reported a moment ago, and their plans to kill people in israel. at the same time, as we pursue this relentless campaign against hamas, we will be making distinction between hamas and its fighters and terrorist machine and between the civilian population of gaza. i think in t

anderson. >> jeremy diamond, thanks very much. joining me now is james spider marks, cnn military analyst. general marks, the idf announced today raids over the past day in the gaza strip using infantry armed forces in an effort to, quote, eliminate the threat of terrorists and weapons in the area and locate hostages. talk to me about what these raids tell you about israel's plan. is this softening up areas before a ground invasion? >> it certainly provides an opportunity to expand upon the -- confirm or deny intelligence. that's one of the -- what i would say -- downstream benefits of doing this. this operation was conducted primarily because -- i can tell you that it probably was based on a high level of confidence on the intelligence that they had on where hostages might be. and that becomes very perishable. that's targetable intelligence. so, the israelis conducted these raids hoping they might be able to get their hands on some hostages and bring them back. as a result of that, you certainly are going to expand and increase your intelligence collection. it's not necessarily a direct h

marks and talk about a couple of things. first of all, the breaking news we have from becky anderson's reporting, talking about these negotiationsod footing right now. what does that tell you about what they're asking? because hamas is basically asking for a humanitarian corridor, which has been asked for by the rest of the world. but how does this play out in the middle of an official war that israel is in? >> well, you could do both. you need to be able to provide for the humanitarian requirements of palestinians that are in gaza. you've got to be able to have a release valve. rafah should be open. egypt should acknowledge they can be part of the solution, just like jordan should acknowledge they should be part of the solution. at the same time, israel can continue its prep tasks for what looks like a ground invasion that will take place. now, all of this, with the hostages, means it might be on pause as we have seen. let's be frank, it is on pause. i think what that really means is, let's go slow to go fast. let's take a pause right now, breathe through our nose, figure out if we can get as many of these hostages back, becaus

mark hertling and elie honig. maggie, what more have you learned from your reporting? >> we confirmed what abc reported, anderson, which is that trump had this conversation with mr. pratt, who is a member of mar-a-lago not long after leaving office. this was a conversation in which trump supposedly revealed a couple of pieces of sensitive information. now it's not clear exactly what trump said. we know that according to abc, it was specifics about capabilities and about distance that the submarines can go and how close they can get in certain cases. this is not -- it doesn't appear that he showed a document to this gentleman. but i don't know for prosecutors that that matters because our understanding is he is among the trial witnesses who prosecutors have listed as possible people they will call. and what they would likely use him for is to establish a pattern of trump being loose with sensitive information and the government's secrets. >> so he might actually be called? >> he is among dozens of people who might be called. and this list stretches back through the white house years. because, anderson, as you kno

[ speaking in a non-english language ] >> how conclusive is something like that? and also coupled with the lack of a crater and also the rocket trajectories that they showed? >> anderson, i'd say that that audio that you just played is not the smoking gun. but it certainly contributes to it. there are all kinds of intelligence that contributes to an assessment of a kind of attack. you just mentioned a couple of them. there's the signals intelligence, the collection of audio. there's the measure of signals intelligence. that's the ability to tell differences in the surface of the ground and what happens. we've had tactical intelligence. the israelis provided tactical intelligence of our radar track of missiles being shot out of southeastern gaza -- southwestern gaza -- just to the

mark schwartz served as the security -- for israel, also a green beret. what is the best strategy to secure hostages in a situation like this? >> anderson, it's good to be with you tonight. obviously, as you reported on throughout the beginning of this crisis, it's one of the most complex environments in which special operations forces would have to go in and secure the release of the hostages that have been taken. over 150 hostages have been taken, representing a multitude of nations. as president biden and secretary blinken, secretary austin have stated, israel has the lead in terms of the analytical efforts, the collection that's ongoing inside of gaza to try to locate. i'm fully confident, particularly with the deployment of the uss ford strike group that deployed the amount of inner agency intelligence collection that's ongoing, and i'm also confident that there's special operations working on this. the most difficult is to locate the hostages. so, ideally, the security situation will be such that once they are located, they can be rescued. >> how much more complex is this made? because this isn't some rogue terror group that is op

anderson in doha, qatar. thank you so much. >>> the senior adviser to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and former israeli ambassador to the united kingdom mark regev is with us in tel aviv. first of all, let me ask you, i know military people i guess in israel, not just the united states, have their own language. when the idf says military, the ground excursion has expanded, ground operations have expanded, i didn't know they'd even begun. what does that mean exactly that the ground operation has expanded? does it mean that israeli soldiers are on the ground in gaza? >> obviously i'm not going to go into anything operational, especially if such an operation is ongoing for obvious reasons, but i can say this -- we are beefing up the pressure on hamas. that pressure will increase and continue to increase until we achieve our goal. >> but is there a ground -- ground operations have expanded, does that mean ground operations are happening? that's what it sounds like it means. again, i don't speak military-ese, whether in the pentagon or the idf. what does it mean? >> i said a moment ago, operations are ongoing. >> right. okay. i still don't we c
