to day we're talking with mark brzezinski, the u. s. ambassador to poland, who began his post just a few months ago, just as washington started warning that war between russia and ukraine was imminent . ambassador brzezinski, it's such a pleasure to be with you today. i look, i just have to start and ask you, you have a perspective, any perch, very near the frontline of this conflict. unlike most of us, what are the big parts of this that those watching the show should be aware of right now in this very tense moment. stage, thank you for having me. what's in one watch in this part of the world? poland, the frontline state for nato. with regard to this crisis in ukraine, 3 things. one, poland has a national policy to take all the refugees coming in from ukraine and put them into people's houses. and apartments never before has a nation done that with refugees arriving to its border and more than 2 and a half 1000000 ukrainians have come across the polish ukrainian border. in the last 30 days, steve, when i was in bassett, or to sweden

ambassador to poland mark brzezinski about this, and he said the u.s.officers to be able to process these refugees and other visa applicants. they are developing new programs to try to facilitate and expedite the process of getting them into the country with a specific focus on ukrainians who have family ties to the u.s. maybe they have a sibling or a relative who's a u.s. citizen and can help work that process for them. but we're also seeing a fascinating trend here in poland in just the last few weeks, which is some refugees who are making the decision to go back to ukraine, to go back to an active war zone. in fact, while there are about 2.5 million who have come over the border from ukraine into poland according to immigration authorities there are about 400,000 who have crossed from poland back in ukraine deciding for family reasons or because they no longer want to be separated from their spouses and their relatives that they are going to make that dangerous decision to go back to ukraine in the middle of the war. hallie? >> i really appreciate yo

that was the ambassador to poland mark brzezinski on the echoes of history repeating themselves in europeties in ukraine and the global effort that is required to meet this humanitarian moment and crisis as poland now anticipates a second wave of refugees as a result. yesterday while marching in poland with thousands of people and survivors for an annual observance at the former site of auschwitz, poland's president denounced russia's invasion and brutality saying, quote, we are here to show that every nation has a sacred right to life. a sacred right to cultivate its traditions, a sacred right to develop. poland has already welcomed 3 million ukrainian refugees and poland has provided many of them with free education, with healthcare, roofs over their heads and places to live. its people have welcomed them with open arms for the most part into their homes. 300,000 of them are in warsaw where the population has risen 15%. the mayor warns that the city is at capacity and needs funding as it braces for and wants to help more displaced ukrainians seeking refuge. we are joined now by the mayo
