here with me is oracle ceo mark hurd.p this morning into oracle open world at a time when the cloud battles are as intense as ever. amazon took a shot at you guys specifically last year. they're trying to move into database. you guys have called them out this morning. tell me, what are the technology innovations that you guys are pushing this year to try to convince people that as larry ellison said yesterday, amazon's lead is over. talk about database, talk about the applications. >> jon, listen, a lot of stuff going on at this event. we have over 60,000 people here, so a lot of customers here. this is really going to be, jon, an extension of the strategy we've been talking about for several years. our cloud strategy has been to go all-in on the cloud. we started with applications or what's called sas. last year we really focused on platform. platform as a service or pas. this year to your point and larry mentioned it last night focusing on infrastructure as a service, next generation suite of services and infrastructure

i talked with mark hurd about national security issues, it gets complicated globally, but right now a lot of what oracle is focused on is the cloud. here's what mark hurd said about that focus this year. >> several years ago we made the decision as part of this overall strategy to go all in on the cloud. we changed our organization to do that, we changed our incentives to do that, in addition to releasing a lot of great products. in q1, our cloud growth in dollars combined with our new software license dollars grew 16%, so really to us it's the combination of those two that are important and the fact that cloud growth was so high, we grew our cloud in q1 82%. >> it is a difficult balancing act, of course, when you've got a legacy business that's very large as that comes down in the cloud era and the cloud business goes up, but oracle trying to make the argument kind of apple-like, that they've got this vertical integration, they do hardware and hardware as a service, they do platform and database, and they do applications, of course, they just announced they want to buy net suite and

we talked to oracle ceo mark hurd earlier today on bloomberg tv and asked how oracle is reaching thecustomers. >> they donate hardware or software on premises. >> people with microsoft, google, amazon, what do you offer there. we are now in this show really highlighting our infrastructure capabilities. it is better security than anyone on the planet. >> they really break it out with a different model. what does this mean for oracle? the great thing is the major supplier to the cloud is ourselves. we have processing capabilities. are justns we believe as good as they are across the rest of the city. it is one place competitors might -- >> there is a bit of the issue in the cloud, you have to invest before you get revenue. if you went back to margins or the sass past is this, we are at 39%. in the last quarter, we are 62. we invested in a lot of data centers up front. we put a lot of capital and. >> there are other companies that have had big adjustments. closed thee just cloud revenue and licensed business that grew 16%. that is the way to look at the combination of the two together.
