joining me now, mark murray. mark, what is your take on what's happening here?tten personal, it's gotten a bit nasty, but this current argument they're having over pork, i think the debate they were having last week is more important over national security. you're seeing chris christie kind of represent the robust, tough on security, tough on terrorism that we saw during the george w. bush years. rand paul has taken the mantle from his father with a heavy skepticism about u.s. roles in world affairs. and that's a healthy debate for the republican party to be having, after its two consecutive losses and presidential contests, to talk about what its direction is for 2016 and beyond. the question is, is this a debate they're having now or a debate we'll continue to see in 2015 and 2016? >> well, joe scarborough on his show this morning noted that he's pretty good friends with chris christie and he said that chris christie is the kind of guy, he likes to get down and dirty lake this. and i know that rand paul had his own version of bring it on to him. but in this th

. >>> nbc news senior political editor mark murray is here with the morning's first read. he joins me now. mark, seems we had this great moment of bipartisanship last night, senators really enjoyed their company but there is no deal forward as we know so far. one thing brought up by john mccain, the idea of seven contested individuals with the national labor relations board, gop. you can have those, won't block those, lets keep those going forward. harry reid is not willing to accept that deal. kind of interesting he wants to go all in. >> here is what we know. we don't have a deal yet. less than two hours votes on the executive appointees. first richard cordray, appointee to head consumer financial board. if the republicans filibuster him or any of the seven nominees, harry reid says he's going to deploy that nuclear option. so we have kind of less than a two-hour window. you alluded to one of the sticking points, democrats are saying, look, we might be able to work out a deal on seven nominees so they don't get filibustered today. we want to be able to have the opportunit

gridlock in the senate and here to talk more about that effort is nbc's senior political editor mark murray. this is not the first time this has happened, is it, and exactly what is he calling for? >> the first thing he wants to change, the filibuster rule. this is related to executive branch appointees. president obama's pick for the labor department, and what has gone on, routinely, is it's taken 60 votes to get this done. a super majority. reid wants to say we want a simple majority passage. this is tying up president obama from getting his agenda from being able to be accomplished. >> let's listen to what the senator actually said and then you can comment on that. senator harry reid. >> during the time we've been a country till barack obama became president, 20 executive nominees were filibustered. during the four years that president obama has been president, he's already had 16 of his nominees filibustered. think about that. >> so what do you say to that? >> he is right on this. republicans are saying, harry reid, if you go ahead and do this and use quote/unquote the nuclear option, n

. >> nbc news senior political editor mark murray joins me now for more of this morning's first read. mark, there seems to be this interesting divide in the gop n now, peter king, chris christie, let's keep up the intelligence gathering, be hawkish. and the libertarian, similar to what we saw in '04 and the issue of iraq. >> a little bit, but the issue of security, after world war ii, has always been we're going to be tougher than our open six whether primary or general election. be it against terrorism, be it against communism, but rand paul and a lot of his followers, if he rubs for president in 2016 or someone like him, face off against hillary clint be, the tables will be turned all of a sudden. the republicans won't be the hawks in that general election. you're seeing chris christie and these comments, what we saw from peter king a few days ago, really try to go back to that republican playbook. there's one other thing interesting here. chris christie's been tagged as being too moderate for cozying up to president obama, being for president obama, supporting gun control measures.

mark murray is joining us.ut also the word compromise coming up again with something out of capitol hill or on capitol hill this week alone. >> that is right, tamron. there has been some compromise and of course the bar has now been incredibly low when people strike one particular deal on student loans which was a much easier sell just a year ago or when president obama's executive branch appointments actually get confirmed, people say, my goodness, things are finally working. of course, that is a very lobar. i will let you know, tamron, there are progressive groups that are pretty outraged about the deal. some of these interest rates are pretty high as it goes in future years. you mentioned the rate for graduate students. you can get a much better deal right now buying a home at a much lower interest rate than some of those future loans. of course, one of the things in that deal was that it does get capped at least in the future, but some people are complaining this isn't a great deal for students. >> any chan
