we want to bring in nbc's mark potter who is now at the saep of that shooting. mark, if you could give us an update in terms of what you are seeing. >> reporter: well the area is still saled off and police have warned us that soon we're going to hear an announcement and probably a loud bang when they -- when the bomb squad blows up one of the knapsacks, the backpack that was being carried by the suspect. say said the team looking at that pack was uncomfortable. wouldn't explain why they are not comfortable or uncomfortable. so they are going to use their methods to blow it up safely. and we're expecting to hear that. that backpack is in the back of the theater where the suspect himself emerged and was engaged by police and shot dead. and so we're still waiting for that to happen. we're also told that several witnesses, maybe 20, who were in the theater complex at the time are being held in another area nearby to be interviewed by police. one question still unanswered is how many people were in the particular theater where the incident occurred. there may not have

joining me live from the scene with the latest is nbc's mark potter.nderstand new details now emerging about this incident. what is the latest we know about what happened in nashville today? >> this is an ever fluid situation. it is minute by minute. we're waiting for an official news conference to happen again soon. what we are hearing now from police is that despite the thing that they said earlier about the suspect being in his 50s, they are now saying he was a 29-year-old white male. a local man. they had not identified him officially yet so we're waiting for that. there have been some reports giving out a name but we're not going with that yet until we get officially confirmed. they've also, they were revising the account of what happened in the room, in the theater when an officer walked in here and confronted the man. at first they said the suspect fired at the officer. the officer fired back. the man went out the back door and was shot dead by s.w.a.t. officers. later this police chief here for the metro police department said that the officer

nbc's mark potter is live in havana. you've lived in miami for many, many years.rlier somebody saying if they told you about today and that flag being raised they could have been killed. how has this attitude shifted in just the last year since the announcement that u.s. and cuba would re-establish the ties? >> i think we've seen the combination of something that's been happening over years, recent years. that is the opinions in miami are becoming divided on the issues of cuba. even in the cuban-american community which traditionally has been opposed to any sort of relations with the cuban government. over time and again since the announcement on december 17th that there would be a political opening, there has been a shift. there's been a more nuanced view expressed in this community. many people still hold firm to the old view that we should not have relations with cuba, that it helps the cuban government, not the united states. but you're hearing more and more voices, seeing more editorial, seeing more polls suggest that there is a new view, a widening view that
