take a look at what has happened to scott walker. mark: whoa. hn: back in february, may and as recently as july, walker was in first place. now he is in 10th place with just 3% of support among iowa republicans. mark, what has happened to scott walker? mark: he has been eclipsed by donald trump and ben carson. i think his jumping ahead in iowa-based on the one speech in january created an artificial bounce. he jumped ahead is a neighboring state governor. his path that will be tough, in part because there are so many people in front of them. and in part because he has a lot of national work to do. they need to improve the national sense of his candidacy and the possibilities of it. he has the boost those things simultaneously. john: he came into the race with a lot of doubt. people thought he was not necessarily intellectually up to the task and was not a major league player. in that moment in the spring, he seemed to put the doubts to rest but he has made a lot of mistakes, a lot of flubs in interviews, said things that were provocative. to thin

no candidate has suffered more than scott walker at the hands of donald trump. mark: the final thing i will say is he has not only fallen to 10th place in iowa, he doesn't have traction in any other states. walker getting out of the race should leave room for others. going forward, what is the impact on the other candidates of the race now? john: there were not that many people who were walker supporters anymore. the bottom line is he was still -- having a potential iowa caucus winner out of the race -- is good for the other iowa caucus winners. people like ted cruz and mike huckabee. anybody who stood a chance of winning in iowa now has a potential rival who is out of their way. mark: a lot of walker supporters bristled when i lumped him him with the established candidates get even know he was running for -- further to the right i still believed in the end in iowa his past success was with a lot of establishment votes. that vote is totally up for grabs if marco rubio doesn't improve there, if chris christie doesn't improve. i think it helps jeb bush. it leads the vo

we saw the governor walker's message was not resonating and his numbers declined accordingly. mark you think trump statements toward scott walker played a role in scott walker having to drop out of the race. corey: mr. trump is someone who doesn't get attacked. when he gets attacked he counter punches. what happened was, mr. trump was waiting for mr. walker to attack him and then mr. trump started to remind people of the bad fiscal climate that the state of wisconsin is in. i think the people in the state of ohio weren't as familiar with that as the way mr. trump could have mentioned that here. john: have do you think his departure has affected the race? corey: it is the indication that career politicians have run on a record trying to say they have been successful in politics. it's not what the american people want right now. john: how does it affect the race though? consolidate that support in iowa. he didn't have much of a base in new hampshire. you will see those individuals who are supporting scott walker. john: let's talk about carly fiorina. your boss was on the today show t

mark halperin. explain to us why scott walker ended up where he did today, on the way out? mark: you will hear a lot of consensus from republicans and pundits about what happened. scott walker never produced a major league operation or candidacy. his own performance was at the center of that. he had numerous things were he said things on the stump work questions were raised about his competence, his readiness for the major leagues. no major league fundraising operation, no major league performance in the debate, not a major-league staff. he was accused as a long time political operative himself of micromanaging. in a competitive field, scott saw a precipitous decline and the thought of going out without money in the till without an improvement i performance is too much for him. john: he was a guy who won election in wisconsin three times in four years. election andll reelection in the face of a huge amount of spending from organized labor to take him down. that made him a national figure. two a lot of conservatives, his fight against unions made him a hero. he took that with

mark: last would be scott walker. he was leading in iowa, and now he's not.t does he need to do better or different? haley: again, he's got some advantages. he's better known than any other governor. he was governor and then he had to run two years later because they recalled him. he got elected governor three times in four years. i think that has been greatly to his advantage. i can't explain exactly why his numbers have subsided. i think he has been trying to talk about different things, and some of them are not as consistent, or the kinds of things he has talked about so much as governor of wisconsin. to say that any of these three guys are out of it or in real trouble is very premature. you haven't mentioned john kasich, who is a governor with a great record. john: just about to do that. he has positions on two issues. one of which support for common core standards and education, the other is expanding medicaid under obamacare in ohio. they are both controversial and unpopular in large parts of the republican party. do you think either one of those is dis

does scott walker, mark, have the time he thinks he has? ry dropped out of the race tonight. we've been on tv now for two and a half hours. i haven't mentioned scott walker's name yet. the talk about jeb bush, carly fiorina, ben carson. is wednesday night make or break? >> i wouldn't say it's make or break, but it's certainly really important for the sense that he needs a moment. think about this of a race between a tortoise and a hair. a lot of people think donald trump will potentially fall. who will be the middle of the pack. i think scott walker needs a moment not necessarily to attack donald trump, but he needs a moment that conservatives will say, i like this guy. >> who do you think the stakes are highest for here? >> i think scott walker is one of them. there's no doubt about that. i also think that if you are a rand paul or a chris christie or a marco rubio, you've got to breakthrough in a way right now. you've got to show why you still belong in the conversation. i would put a lot of pressure on sort of the christie and rand paul,

mark: talk to us about scott walker. on his sword for the good of the republican party. phil: the truth is he fell on his sword because he had no money left for the campaign. when he launched his campaign he was the prohibitive favorite in iowa and considered a top-tier favorite, now it has all fallen apart. i haven't talking to people inside his camp about what actually happened. there are a number of reasons this actually occurred. mismanagement with his finances, he hired too much staff. and he was not a good fundraiser. there was also scott walker the candidate. liket tripped up on things birthright citizenship and then revoking birthright citizenship. there are a lot of elements here, like time to coalesce around someone not named donald trump, his biggest problem was not donald trump, it was himself. governor walker made his bones, if you will, by taking on the unions in the state of wisconsin. why did that never resonate and why did it seem like he didn't mention it? that goes back to the inconsistency of the mess

mark preston with me now. just first and foremost, before we get into scott walker, impressio impressions?weather is beautiful. what a site to have a presidential library on top of a hill just looking out. it's gorgeous. quite frankly, inside outdistances what we're seeing out here. >> the people who have come here -- >> everything. amazing. >> let's talk about governor scott walker. republican governor of wisconsin. this is typically a blue state. union buster. so he's taken on the recall challenge, weathered through that. when you look at him in the polls, though, he's slipping. so he's sixth nationally. ten when you look at how he's doing in iowa. he talked to us on "state of the union." he said, listen, i have to step it up. >> this election seems to be at least right now about embracing outsiders, republicans liking donald trump and dr. ben carson and carly fiorina, people who have never before held elective office. we just saw governor rick perry, the longest serving governor in texas history drop out. you have spent a lifetime working in politics and government. why should voters an
