markey: thank you, mr. president. mr. president, scott pruitt is the administrator of the environmental protection agency. he is charged with running the agency and ensuring its mission. there are serious questions about mr. pruitt's leadership, but we'll get to that later. today the senate is preparing to vote on the nominee to be the second-highest ranking official at the environmental protection agency, andrew wheeler. and as the number two at the environmental protection agency, andrew wheeler deserves the kind of scrutiny that reflects a position one step away from being the administrator. andrew wheeler has spent years protecting the coal industry. first, from here in the senate where he worked to prevent passage of climate legislation.

i'm going to focus, as senator markey has, and several of my colleagues before me on this web of deceit that we have been talking about here today. the koch brothers' web of dark money, lobbyists and infiltration into the trump administration that truly, truly threatens our democracy. the influence of their hundreds of millions of dollars is pervasive, pernicious, and hidden. i applaud senator whitehouse's work to focus public attention on this threat. and thank you to my colleagues for shining a spotlight on the murky tentacles of the koch influence empire here in washington, especially their influence on the swamp that is the trump administration. and we must keep fighting for comprehensive campaign finance and electoral reform to get dark money like the koch brothers out of our politics.

senator ed markey talking a lot about having people elect to give away their privacy first of all, outlining concrete things that this company should be doing. as you walk away from that house hearing the following day, were you satisfied that this company knows what it needs to do? >> i don't know the answer to that, but i had suggested that facebook look to legislation which i am a co-sponsor, the browser legislation, that would require opting in by the american people, instead of opting out. and it would apply across the board to edge providers, as well as isps. i think that's the move that should occur, that we should pass that legislation. also there was a consent degree in 2001 between facebook and the federal trade commission. i asked mr. zucker beshg abober that. >> should the company be regulated? now having watched the senate, do you have a definitive answer to that? you think facebook and other technical companies are capable of regulation? >> the federal trade commission is now investigating whether any of the provisions were violated. >> do you have the sense silicon valley has

joining me now, ed markey of massachusetts, he sits on the environmental committee and foreign relationsommittee. senator, we're just getting this in from juana summers, some of the details -- some of the details about ronny jackson, the allegations of misconduct now about ronny jackson and the details of what this is all about. what is your reaction to this? >> my reaction is that the president clearly named him as the nominee to run the va almost on a personal impulse. he likes him. he thinks he can run the entire va. but clearly there was no comprehensive vetting of him for this job. not only in terms of his competence as a manager of an institution that has responsibility to provide benefits, medical benefits to the families of every veteran in our country, but also his own personal temperament and behavior. so now, it comes to congress to actually have to do the vetting that ordinarily is done by an administration, and clearly enough information has already surfaced that is calling for a time-out while more information on a comprehensive basis can be gathered about him in his suitab
