next, an in memoriam for sherriff deputy marla denzer. she died earlier in january. she joined the department in june 1994. after completing the core course, she was assigned to county jail 7. she graduated from the santa rosa trading center and return to county jail 7, after which she embarked on a varied career. county jail no. 9 in the transportation unit here at the time of her death, she was assigned to county jail one. she was well respected by her fellow deputies for the team spirit and work ethic, and i know the loss is devastating to many in the department. next is somebody that many of us knew through his tireless activism. it was quite a shock because he was here at the swearing in of board members just recently of his unexpected passing. james howard pi, jr. he lived his life as an engineer in the net states navy and community activist. he was a strong servant of god, to his family, his church, his community, and the city of san francisco. he was a resident of the fillmore for over seven years, a member of the uptown church of christ. he is survived by si

marla is live in berkeley to explain what cal faces. >> reporter: good morning, brent. it's the fourth quarter, 30 seconds to go and on the line five sports programs at cal. the men's baseball team, men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, and men's rugby, all face elimination. if they are not saved they would be gone after this school year. like most moves these days, it all comes down to money and saving money. reducing the number of intercollegiate teams from 29 to 24 would save the university about $4 million a year. but eliminating two women's teams, gymnastics and lacrosse women's teams, would put cal in violation of title 9 which calls for genter equity. it is a federal law so that is a big element that the chancellor is taking into consideration. the chancellor is facing his decision on two main criteria. that $25 million is raised to pay for the operating expenses for the program for five to 10 years, two, that the university has a plan to build an endowment to fund the program long term. supporters have formed a group called save cal sports which report
