. >> and i'm marla tellez. this morning, an east bay realtor is behind bars after a web cam, set up by a 12-year-old, allegedly caught him stealing jewelry at an open house. christie smith is live in lafayette. police this is not the first time this realtor has been busted. >> reporter: that's what we're hearing. it all started with shall as , said, a 12-year-old girl who had her web cam on during an open house. apparently she saw someone going through her things. police made an arrest here in lafayette and now are wondering if there may be more victims out there. they arrested douglas john caligeno, 46 years old. they say he went through people's things, taking jewelry. in 2010, he was a real estate agent who used his acticess to lock boxes in san ramon and sold items from those homes online. he was then convicted of burglary. lafayette police put his picture up again and san ramon police recognized the man. a search of his home turned up items they think were stolen and a gps system. >> he had programmed in m

good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning.d us is facebook's new home at the intersection of willow road and bayfront expressway. mark zuckerberg has plans to move it -- add to it, move right across the street on the other side of bayfront expressway. that's a little bit closer to east palo alto, and that's not sitting well with that city. the expansion campus would sit on what's currently a vacant 22-acre lot. it would bring another 2800 employees, that means a whole lot more traffic in the area. we drove it. east palo alto city limit is just about a half mile away. the mayor there is concerned of gridlock and a general sense of invasion. if facebook does, in fact, expand, it would mean about 5,000 employees would work at this single intersection alone. the palo alto daily news was told the city is considering filing a lawsuit to stop this from happening. the city will talk about the potential suit at a closed session meeting tomorrow. facebook is hoping to move across the street by 2017. so it could all happen in the next fi

good morning, marla. >> reporter: good morning.an see the crime scene tape is up, this is in front of the union building on north point street as you mentioned, in the fisherman's wharf area. plenty of police officers doing their investigative work. i just hung up the phone with the public information officer. they are investigating the alleged assault of a young girl. what happened was the girl was separated from a group, that group called in a missing person's report about 2:30 this morning. that's when police set out in search of this girl. they found her about an hour and 15 minutes later with the suspect right in front of the union building here. that was about 3:45 when they located her. both the victim and suspects, they were taken to local hospitals with unknown injuries. we are waiting to get more information about the suspect. again, at this point san francisco police investigating the alleged assault of a young girl in front of the union building. john and laura. >> we'll let you continue to gather information. thank you

good morning. >> marla, good morning.he second of two debates in south carolina before tomorrow's primary started off with these explosive allegations from newt gingrich's ex-wife. she had done an interview with abc, part was released before the debate where she says not only was he unfaithful, something he has acknowledged while he was out promoting family values but she also said he asked for an open marriage, something that he denies, and it was a very first question at this debate. and newt gingrich shot back at the moderator of the debate, essentially questioning why this would come up as the first question at a presidential debate saying i'm appalled. but rick santorum brought up the issue saying that while he liked gingrich as a nominee, he brings a lot of baggage, people tend to wonder what's going to happen next, something that santorum says we can't afford. mitt romney who has been the front-runner in south carolina going into this primary tomorrow, still has a lot of questions that he's answering about his taxe

i'm marla tellez. jon kelley is off today. thousands of workers are off the job at hospitals statewide and now medical centers are relying on backup workers to take care of patients all day long. nbc bay area's christie smith is live at kaiser permanente medical center in oakland where workers are marching picket lines. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. four hours into this one-day strike and the workers i'm speaking with this morning think it's going pretty well. there's one union involved in a contract dispute, but they have support from two other unions. they are out here today as well, including the california nurses association, which has about 17,000 members. the kaiser worker says this one-day walkout has do with cuts to their benefits and patient care. they say patients wait way too long for appointments. it's their fourth walkout since 2010, and second since september. >> it's just simply unexcusable that they're scrimping on the patient care in psychiatry and that they're cutting the benefits of the peo

i'm marla tellez. >> and i'm jon kelley. this morning, the wrecking ball is tearing through concrete and metal bars that have kept bay area inmates locked up for decades now. the san francisco city jail? san bruno will be torn down by the end of the day. that is where nbc bay area's christie smith is now. she joins us live with a look at all the demolition. we see the wrecking ball right behind you, christie. >> reporter: yeah. good morning. it took five or six swings of the wrecking ball for it to finally do some damage to this old jail but it's happening. 78 years after it opened its doors, last act of san francisco sheriff mike hennessey. he said he vowed to close san francisco jail number three in his first campaign for sheriff 32 years ago. there were reports that it was deteriorating quickly with rumors it was overcrowded. it was built for about 550 inmates but often held 750. it took a federal court ruling in 1997 to finally force the closure. hennessey told us this was a long time coming. >> the interesting compariso

marla tellez is live in our newsroom with a look at all of this deadly damage.d morning. >> good morning. the number of deaths still stands at two all because of the strong storms hammering parts of the south. the newest video shows the damagidge birmingham, alabama. some of these homes leveled by the strong winds and heavy rains. emergency officials say roads are now blocked in the area and are reporting that two people were killed in central alabama. a 16-year-old boy and 82-year-old man. we're learning they were found in two separate areas of jefferson county. searchers are going door to door trying to rescue people trapped in their home. much the same in tennessee and arkansas where the same system also destroyed homes and buildings there. hard to believe since this is january, but as many as 16 tornados have been reported throughout the central arkansas. bottom line this morning, parts of tennessee, mississippi and alabama are under a tornado watch, and the death toll sits at two for those deaths in alabama. >> thank you, marla. 6:51. san francisco sheriff

materials and parts. >> thank you, marla. it is 6:32 now.t was a horrifying end to a couple's wedding day. deputies were called to the idef hall saturday night where four men were suffering from stab wounds, the victims leaving a wedding reception when two men assaulted them. the injuries were serious but all are expected to recover. investigatoring are searching for the attackers and a motive. >> a bay area congresswoman asking governor brown to replace the man leading the investigation into the san bruno explosion. jackie spear sent a letter arguing that the commission president michael peevy cannot be objective. the cpuc was headed by peevy in 2010 when it was found by investigators to be partly responsible for the deadly pipe line rupture. eight people died and dozens of homes destroyed in that blast. >> pg&e has a new tool. the utility will demonstrate a gas leak detection device. it is more sensitive for detecting problems on thousands of miles of a transition line. they are testing two of them. >> the domestic violence charges against

"today in the bay's" marla tellez has more on where oracle is making a move.d morning, marla. >> reporter: jon, good morning. the software giant is here. you can see oracle's name already posted right in front of this building behind me. now a small sign for a big building. this is on almaden boulevard right next to the convention center. a building that sat empty for most of its life, a victim of the recession. but things are looking up. oracle now takes up 3 of the 19 floors. that's about 66,000 square feet. it is expected to eventually have more than 400 oracle employees that will call this office home. oracle is headquartered in redwood shores. larry ellison's company actually inherited this building in 2008 when it paid billions to buy san jose based bea systems. the building's main tenant though is pwc. that's pricewaterhousecoopers. that moved in just over a year ago. that company occupies more than half of the office space here with some 1,200 employees. now this means only 10% of this tower is now vacant and that is certainly great news for downtown s

we'll keep an eye on it and continue to update you throughout the show. >> thank you very much, marla. in the meantime, police are searching for two men who shot at an east palo alto during a robbery attempt. police say the gun men demanded money from the man just after 1:30 on sunday morning. when the 53-year-old victim walked away he was shot in the lower back. he is expected to recover. the robbers got away. >> city police are searching for a driver who hit and killed a pedestrian. it happened around 6:00 yesterday morning near union square. the man died at the scene. they have no details of the driver or the car involved. if you have information please call union city police. >> opening arguments start today for an alleged gang member accused of killing a father and his two sons. 25-year-old edwin ramos charged with shooting and killing the three back in 2008 as they drove home from a picnic. prosecutors say ramos mistook the family members for members of a rival gang. another son was in the car at the time of the shooting but did manage to survive. >> a union city teacher accused

marla tellez joins us live.he has all of the latest details. >> mother nature may not be entirely at fault. an arsonist could be. at least a dozen cars and six tractor-trailers collided on interstate 75 in gainesville early yesterday morning. all along officials said heavy fog and smoke in the area are to blame. this morning investigators are saying a nearby fire that started saturday may have been intentionally set. so far that fire burns more than 60 acres. 18 people are recovering in the hospital. more trouble at the tofukushima plant. almost eight tons of contaminated water leaked from the plant. more leaks have been found and more than a dozen places. officials are stressing the leaking water has been contained and has not spilled out of that plant. >> it could be almost a year before the capsized cruise ship is removed. officials say the process could take 10 months which means the eye sore could be visible during the height of summer tourism. searches continue as more than a dozen people remain missing. b
