marla tellez could do that backwards with her eyes closed. go giants! >>> we have a consumer warning this morning for shoppers of barnes&noble. they say their pin pads were hacked at dozens of store, some in the bay area. arturo santiago is live with how customers' information was swiped. arturo, good morning. >> reporter: barnes&noble says it is a sophisticated effort to steal the information of its customers. the company is advising anyone who used a card at their stores to change their pins and also to look for any unauthorized transactions. the barnes & noble is one of 63 stores across the country to have one of its pinpads compromised. only one device in each store was hacked. the criminals planted bugs in the affected pin pads to allow them to obtain pins and credit card numbers. barnes & noble stopped using the pin pads at all the nearly 700 stores nationwide and that happened on september 14th. there have been some cases in which information was stolen and used to make unauthorized purchases. some of the customers we talked to are hesitant to us

marla tellez is live in mountain view with more on the details of tonight's city council meeting going on there. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. chick-fil-a is based in atlanta. it has more than 1600 locations nationwide. it's hoping to add to its roster, though, by turning this sizzler on a very popular west camino real in mountain view into another chick-fil-a, but a group of environmentally friendly people is hoping to prevent this from happening. you may recall chick-fil-a recently opened in san jose amid some controversy. protesters upset over the owner's comments about gay marriage, comments he later retracted. but according to the "mercury news" opponents of this proposed mountain view location have another bone to pick. they have filed an appeal that takes issue with the drive-through that would come with the 4400 square-foot restaurant on el camino. they say the drive-through would make el camino more dangerous for bike riders. the appeal also says noise and air pollution would become a problem for people who live nearby. but the zoning administrator who a

marla tellez joins us live from sfo with a look at just how bad things are expected to be. a lot of people stranded out there, marla? >> reporter: laura, good morning. they certainly are but, you know what, they are handling it pretty well with a smile. we'll show you a few of their reactions in just a bit. cancelled certainly is the word of the day here at sfo with more than 150 flights already cancelled and it's just after 6:00 a.m. most of these flights are bound for the east coast. no airline is immune with american, delta, alaska, u.s. airways and jetblue all showing cancelled flights. departing flights to jfk in new york, boston, baltimore, newark, and washington, d.c. have been cancelled. affected passengers are telling us the airlines are handling hurricane sandy well giving most of them a reasonable heads up that their flight has been redirected or cancelled altogether so passengers are making the most of it. >> you were affected by hurricane sandy some. >> yes. the conference i was going to in d.c. was called off. >> you just found this out this morning. >> late ye

marla tellez is live with a look at the effect on the bay area. ng, marla. >> reporter: laura, good morning. business is certainly picking up here at sfo and we have met our fair share of passengers who are affected by hurricane sandy. not surprising because officials here say more than 150 flights have about cancelled here. most of those flights headed direct low to the east coast, the eye of the storm. take a look for yourself. as of now all departing flights to new york's jfk, baltimore, boston, philadelphia, newark and washington, d.c., have been cancelled. although we have not found any passengers who are outright stranded here at sfo just yet, we have found those who have been forced to reroute their flights or change their plans altogether. but everyone we've talked to are making the most of it. in fact one man's conference was cancelled in d.c. and he and his wife are now headed for vacation, headed to georgia. hurricane sandy is expected to make landfall in central or southern new jersey sometime tonight, so it is safe to say flights heade

marla tellez is in our newsroom this morning with the details. this is such a hard story to hear, marla. >> reporter: just awful, laura. good morning to you. a quick search online shows those parents, kevin and marina krim lived in san francisco for about seven years before moving to new york city just over a year ago. during that time in the bay area, kevin worked for yahoo!. we know that's in sunnyvale and then bloomberg. currently he's an executive with cnbc based in new york. we do have a picture of the couple that we found online. here they are, livewire.com. kevin had just landed at jfk international airport last night after leaving sfo in fact when he learned two of his children were stabbed to death by their nanny. officials say his 38-year-old wife, marina, walked into their upper west side apartment to find their 2-year-old son leo and 6-year-old daughter lucia dead inside the bathtub. their 50-year-old nanny was playing nearby with a knife at her side. >> on the floor of the bathroom is a nanny who apparently had inflicted wounds in her

marla tellez joins us now live on the phone along the san mateo coast. e efforts out there. marla, good morning. >> reporter: jon, good morning. officials say their boat capsized about one mile offshore from pigeon point light house which is about 20 miles south of half moon bay which is where we're coming to you live from this morning. for the most part the search has been suspended overnight but the coast guard is expected to launch its helicopter and plane at daybreak today. officials say 46-year-old king yow sang is one of the missing men. he and three friends took off from san francisco in their 23-foot fishing boat about 5:30 yesterday morning. mid-morning their boat capsized after getting hit pby a powerfu wave sending all four into the chilly waters. two of the men were wearing life vests and were able to swim to shore to get help. sang and the other friend were not and this morning they are still missing. both are from san francisco. i spoke to his sister on the phone this morning. she says sang is an avid fisherman and knows what he's doing. >>

marla tellez has the day off. we start off with breaking news in the south bay. dr. marvin bonham has been charged with a total of 18 felonies. he is now accused of trading prescriptions for oxycontin in return for cash and return for methamphetamine. bonham allegedly wrote more than half his prescriptions for county residents. the 61-year-old resident is scheduled to be arraigned some time tomorrow. >>> it was 23 years ago today that the ground shook and buildings fell and sadly, 63 people lost their lives. we are talking about the earthquake of 1989. nbc's damian is keeping an eye on that. >> reporter: this is the reservoir and there is concern about the strength in case of a large earthquake. the valley water district has taken precautions. one precaution is keeping the water level at 68% capacity. the concern is the dam would not support a large tremor and sending the water into the valley. a tremor would indicate a large concern. the earthquake struck at 5:04 p.m. on this day in 1989. it caused between $6 billion and $8 billion in damage and triggered a wave of

marla tellez has the day off. we begin this morning with san francisco city leaders all fed up with a south bay tech company and the private bus service for people who live in the city. they say traffic caused by the big cruisers needs to be and must be regulated. nbc bay area's christie smith is in san francisco with more on the brewing battle there. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. on the one hand, the shuttles are getting people to work and getting cars off the road and getting people to their jobs. on the other hand, a lot of people in san francisco think these shuttle buses that just keep popping up need a little bit more regulations when they are riding on the streets of san francisco. particularly during commute hours. they see some of them blocking bus stops and causing traffic conditions at the height of the morning commute. supervisor john avalos asked for a permit system for shuttle operators. they would have to pay to use muni bus stops or other curb for pick ups and drop offs. s

i'm marla tellez. >> and i'm jon kelley. we start off with a four-alarm fire at a restaurant disrupting muni service five hours. the blaze started at the squat & gobble cafe across the street from the west portal muni station. that is where christie smith has been live on the scene all day long. any idea how close things are to getting back to normal? >> reporter: we just saw a flare up a couple of minutes ago at the restaurant. firefighters are actually still spraying water on it at this hour. arson investigators haven't gotten a close look inside of the restaurant where part of the roof collapsed overnight. i think you just saw the train go by. muni is back up and running after the complete shutdown at the west portal tunnel. intense flames at west portal. that is how firefighters describe what they were up against. at 6:30 this morning, the fire was upgraded to four alarming. the squat & gobble restaurant had a partial roof collapse and it continued to spread. >> one is a wine shop and a dental office and another set of b

marla tellez joins us now with more insight from a political science professor. a. >> dr. jim cottrell teaches political science. thanks for your time. last time we spoke at the top of the hour and you mentioned governor romney's lack of foreign policy experience because he doesn't have that control in the white house. one could critique as romney struggled to differentiate how his foreign policy differs from president obama's policy. do you think he distinguished himself? >> i think one of the difficulties is to distinguish your policies from what the president has put in place. i think that governor romney in many instances, there seemed to be a lot of similarity between how he would approach things like iran and syria, because the president has really tried to score some points there and say what would you do short of going to war that would be different than what we're already doing? and the president tried to make the point that there's not that much distinction there and that really i have the experience and so i have the edge there. if there's no other diff

. >> and i'm marla tellez. the question here is will he keep his job? after ten months of controversy, today is finally decision day for suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi. christie smith is live in san francisco where the board of supervisors will decide the fate of the embattled sheriff. christie, this case is about a year in the making. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, marla. well, this whole ordeal finally expected to come to an end after nine months of legal wrangling and a very public drama that played out here in san francisco. later this afternoon the san francisco board of supervisors expected to finally take a vote on whether or not to remove suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi from office. it would take nine votes from the 11-member board for that to happen. mirkarimi pleaded guilty after an argument with his wife. she is a tv star from venezuela. in that argument she suffered a bruised arm. mirkarimi is on probation and in counseling and the couple has reunited and said this whole thing was politically motivated. after mirkar

i'm marla tellez. >> good morning. i'm jon kelley. a massive raid leads to a long list of arrests in the south bay. agents and police swarming the streets of san jose to take down a criminal network. this is a story you will see only on nbc bay area. we have the story on the raids in the newsroom. damian. >> reporter: the fbi is being tight-lipped saying the affidavits remain sealed. this is video we shot this morning at the blossom hill apartments. this is one of several locations hit. we saw agents in suits making one arrest. we understand s.w.a.t. teams lent a hand in the action. about an hour ago, the san francisco office of the fbi would say it is the lead agency and its gang task force in the south bay was in charge of the operation. >> i can't comment on the number of officers out there. there was an appropriate number of tactical personnel and fbi s.w.a.t. personnel involved in addition to numerous others across the san jose area. >> reporter: the fbi tells me the federal affidavits should be unsealed by the end of today. they

i'm marla tellez. >> i'm jon kelley. today, opening statements are being heard in the trial of giselle esteban. she is accused of killing michelle le. we have christie smith live at the courthouse with the latest on the trial of giselle esteban. >> reporter: the prosecutor opened with a photo of a smiling michelle le. he showed another photo of what is believed to be her last photo. her walking out of a parking lot and near where she was working. this right before she disappeared. her family packed the courtroom. they did not speak, but wore buttons of the 26-year-old on them. le disappeared in may of 2011 where she was studying nursing. her body found four months later. a former friend of hers, esteban killed her because she had feeling for her boyfriend. i guess we're having problems with that awed oudio. later, he developed a serious relationship with esteban. later, they had a daughter together. he said giselle ruined their relationship. prosecutors said nothing was going on. the defense is up next. opening statement

i'm marla tellez. >> i'm jon kelley. we are following a developing story in oakland. a total of four people killed in three separate shootings all within a 12-hour span. >> it happened on 90th and macarthur. less than two hours later, a second shooting on macarthur. then two people killed on 72nd avenue and international boulevard. that is where bob redell joins us live on what has become a deadly day in oakland. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla and jon. we spoke to a resident who said they wondered what is going on. four gun deaths within the city limits since 9:00 last night. all young men in their late teens or early 20s. two killed on 72nd avenue where we are right now. a residential street. a couple of blocks away from international boulevard. these men were in a green minivan on the street. a van that one of the passengers bought within the past day. at 6:00 as the sun was coming up this morning, someone walked up to the van and there was a confrontation. this person fired multiple shots at them killing them both here on the scene. police tell
