"today in the bay's" marla tellez live with more on this really bizarre incident. >> it really is. we're standing on the on-ramp to northbound 280 from king road. we're right next to pal stadium. if you know the area, you know where we are this morning t. on-ramp reopened within the last hour after pliz had a busy night cleaning up the mess left behind after the man jumped from way above. this is the connector to 101 at the 260-880 interchange. the man jumped as he was trying to get away from police and landed plenty of feet below on the on-ramp below. the sand you see here is to cover up his blood. pretty gruesome. at one point police using a tape measure to figure out the distance, estimated to be about three to four stories high. it started before 9:00 last night when they attempted to pull over a white sedan. the driver wouldn't stop and eventually spun out on the 101 connector. that's when he took off on foot and jumped the railing. police are not saying why they attempteded to pull him over in the first place. >> talking to a few witnesses, trying to get their statements and

that is the latest from here in san jose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> marla, thank you veryr that update. >>> in another story, moving on, a man is dead and the driver under arrest after an overnight crash in san jose. according to the chp the car was taking the bascom avenue exit from northbound 880 at about 10:40 last night. that driver lost control on the curve and the car flipped across the concrete barrier right onto the on-ramp to northbound 880. officers say that car rolled at least three times before finally you can see it landing upside down on that on-ramp. the passenger inside the car sadly died at the scene. the 23-year-old driver was taken to the hospital suffering with some minor injuries. that driver has now been arrested on suspicion of dui. >>> the family of the young woman who was shot and killed in downtown san jose now speaking out for the very first time. the family of 19-year-old kimberly chico telling nbc bay area she was a nursing student at san jose state and she was about to start her sophomore year at the school. they say she graduated from indepen

"today in the bay's" marla tellez joining us live from valley medical center in san jose where that impersonator was caught. marla, investigators this morning, they're worried because she could strike again. >> reporter: you just said it. good morning to you. investigators are still worried because, as you mentioned, she has already been released from custody. here is a look at her. she is 29-year-old crystal cook, arrested here on friday. department says she was wearing scrubs, carrying a stethoscope and a fake medical i.d. when they cussed her. deputies reiterate she does not have any medical training. real nurses here caught on to her impersonating scheme and the hospital took immediate action. the sheriff's department said when interviewing cook she never gave a valid reason as to why she did this, but did say she never intended to harm anyone. still patients here are on edge. >> that's pretty scary. >> what if she would have had access to getting ahold of a baby. you know what i'm saying? you just can't trust people these days. >> reporter: a rally medical spokesperson says cook's badge wou

today in the bay's marla tellez live at the scene with an update on that investigation. good morning, marla. >>>. >> reporter: good morning. chp officers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward as they try to figure out what went wrong. we're standing right at the alpine road portola valley exit in unincorporated santa clara county. the headlights are heading northbound. the accident happened just down the way. chp officers say that's when the party bus lost control, slammed into a tree and rolled down the embankment. this happened just before 11:00 last night. the crash cleared just over an hour ago. video we have shows the mangled mess that was once the party bus. the right side of the van was sheared off upon impact. the only known passenger on board was pronounced dead at the scene. ficials say he was an hispanic man in his late 30s from san francisco. when crews arrived, the driver was nowhere to be found. however, we do have -- we do know a man was found about four hours later in this same area along 280. we have video of him getting treat

"today in the bay's" marla tellez live at the san jose police department with exactly how this programorks. marla, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this new gang suppression unit will operate seven days a week, will not have a day off. according to the police chief it will be staffed with 14 law enforcement officials. chief larry esquivel sent out a tweet just hours ago explaining the unit will have two teams, each team consisting of six off serts and one sergeant. it will operate during peak hours. this is not a first for sjpd. it used to have a gang suppression unit before recent budget cuts took it away. the hope is the unit will help reduce violent crimes like the one that happened over this past weekend, a 19-year-old woman was shot and killed on east san salve door street near san jose state. while it's not known if the shooting which was the city's 30th homicide of the year was, in fact, gang related, the "mercury news" reports kimberly estrada was not the intended target. so far no arrests have been made. now, this latest shooting happened very early saturday morning. t

"today in the bay's" marla tellez is here with the story. >> reporter: good morning. 33 extra students may not sound like a lot, but it really is a big deal considering this school owes location. this is cast lay yeah school right behind me here. smack dab in the middle of a tight-knit neighborhood at the corner of bryant and embarcadero. you know embarcadero is a very busy main thoroughfare. according to the school's website, it's the only independent girls school for grades 6-12 in the bay area. this comes with a hefty price tag, for the upcoming school year, $38,200 per student. cast lay yeah is permitted to have 415 girls. for the upcoming school year, it has enrolled 448. there's the extra 33. neighbors here are upset because they say parking is already just a huge problem, especially during drop-off and pick-up hours. they're worried about more noise and pollution. today the school is submitting a report to the city of palo alto applying for a new permit to allow for the extra students and to prove it has a plan for the additional traffic. in the meantime, to help address communi

"today in the bay's" marry ann favro joins us live. >> reporter: good morning. this fire is stubborn and unpredictable. fire crews worked overnight, and they are making progress, but still the fire remains just 20% contained. many of the people who were forced to evacuate came here to this american red cross shelter in sonora last night. they stayed on cots. it gave them peace of mind to know they are safe and so are their pets. the rim fire is the seventh largest wildfire in california history and has scorched 288 square miles. this fire is less than six mimes from the city of tuolumne. fire crews have been busy establishing burn lines to prevent the flame from reaching populated areas. so far the fire's destroyed 101 structures, 31 homes. this morning, as soon as it's light out, helicopte

i'm marla tellez. in for jon kelley. south bay, we are following breaking news in san jose. a would-be burglar shot by a security guard at an apartment complex in almaden. it happened near guadeloupe oak grove park on star wood place. bob redell just spoke to police. this happened a few hours ago. is it an active investigation out there? >> reporter: good morning, marla. sjpd still out here, still processing the scene. but as far as trying to find suspects, they've given up on that search. they have the security guard in custody downtown being questioned. they're still trying to determine whether or not he will face a crime charge. they also have the person shot in the hospital this morning, suspected car burglars. we're here at the apartments, senior apartment complex, this is almaden expressway here in almad almaden. around 1:30 the security guard came across four people trying to break into cars in the parking lot of the complex. it's not clear, police won't tell us whether the security guard works for the complex. there was a confrontation between the security guard and

i'm marla tellez. >> i'm a he jon kelley. good morning, everyone. the shooting that marla mention happened at a home on gormley avenue in oakland, a few blocks away from the 98th avenue exit off interstate 880 where nbc bay area's christie smith is now with an update from police. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is a horrible story, a little baby boy shot and killed. i just spoke with an aunt who was shaken up and didn't want to go on camera, but she says she was inside the home when all this happened, that there was a houseful of children and adults, they were all sleeping when suddenly, they heard rapid gunfire coming from the rear of the home and what happened next just shocked everyone. i wanted to show you what neighbors have been leaving here, happened within the last couple of minutes, people walking up here in tears. two people were hit and the family identified the littlest victim as 1-year-old drew jackson. they call him baby drew. they say he was laying with his dad, 20-year-old andrew thomas, who was also shot and both

i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happening right now, we want to get to this, more than 105,000 acres scorch outside yosemite. firefighters are struggling to get any sort of containment on this one. the upper hand has been completely illusive. one percent of the fire is contained right now. that is down from 5% that had been declared as of wednesday. about 2500 buildings are in danger of burning. highway 120, one of the three main roads into yosemite still completely shut down. the governor now declaring a state of emergency in that area to try and free up the money and resources to help 1,800 firefighters already on the ground. at least nine buildings we can tell you are destroyed. smoke and ash forcing a lot of the schools in that area to shut down to be very safe. the fire has forced the cancellation of the popular strawberry music festival. the five-day bluegrass event was supposed to be held on labor day weekend. but now things are in flux down there. for more on the fire, let's get a check with our meteorologis

i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happening right now, a wildfire on the outskirts of yosemite still burning out of control this morning with about '202500 buildings now threatened by those flames. we the tell you the fire has grown to 25 square miles and has now forced the state to shut down route 120 going into the park. this morning lower bay area firefighters are being called in to help battle these flames. "today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san mateo county which has already sent crews down to help fight the wildfire. christie, this is just one bay area agency sending firefighters out to help out at yosemite. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i wish i had better news for you. but the rim fire has jumped a containment line and seems to be growing in nearly every direction. as you said, bay area firefighters are helping out. alameda county sent about 22 firefighters from throughout the county. also san mateo county office of emergency services, their fire department sent out crews, and also within

i'm marla tellez in nor laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm jon kelley. happy to have you along. happening right now, an out of control wildfire growing quickly in southern california near the town of banning, about 20 miles west of palm springs where temperatures there are expected to get into the high 80s and 90s in some areas with the winds blowing hard to about 20 miles per hour. we can tell you right now one person has been airlifted to a hospital suffering burns. two firefighters so far have been injured and dozens of buildings are damaged or destroyed right now. we can tell you also 1500 people in the area are now under evacuation orders. let's give you a live look from our chopper down there over that wildfire. more than 500 firefighters on scene now working, battling very hard trying to get a handle on this blaze along with five helicopters there and five air tankers. we also learned crews from san mateo county and santa cruz county have gone down to help fight the fire. there is no word on exactly what has caused the fire. >>> now to breaking news in texas where an over

. >> i'm marla tellez in for laura garcia-cannon. we begin with breaking news out of texas where a violent shooting spree kills four people and leaves four others including two boys hurt this morning. police say one man now behind bars is responsible for two shootings, one in dallas and one just seven miles away in desoto. police say the gunman opened fire inside a home in dallas about 10:30 last night. when police got to the scene, they found four people with gunshot wounds. two were pronounced dead right there. authorities say the same man fled to nearby desoto where he opened fire wounding two others. lerlene smith says her daughter and granddaughter are among the dead. >> i came back in, went to mia's room, and that's where i found her mother lying in the doorway. everything he was throwing. i don't know what he was doing. hopefully they didn't suffer long. >> so sad. smith says the shooter was her daughter's boyfriend. he was arrested at that second scene. no word yet on the condition of the other four victims. >>> oakland polic
