as you can see on the bottom of your screen, that is a maroon sedan. the news just breaking a few minutes ago that this accident of some sort, we don't know if it's an accident or intentional. we have no details on that, but we do know that multiple eyewitnesses are reporting that this car drove up onto the sidewalk and a very busy and populated times square. it is now hoisted against a pole on the sidewalk. multiple pedestrians were mowed down in this incident. 13 people are being treated for injuries after all of this. no word yet on what is happening with the driver of this vehicle. again, if it was intentional or an accident, we are waiting on reporting to come out of the scene. right now, eyewitness accounts do say that the car was driving and the opposite direction of traffic. it could be an accident, we don't know. emergency vehicles and personnel are blocking off the entire area of times square they are. you can see fire trucks, ambulances are present. as we were just reminded, this is an extreme the busy time of day in new york city. the noon

. >> this maroon car comes careening, and just knocking into everybody.rere's people on the hood of the car, and being thrown over the sides. people are screaming and there's blood everywhere. >> reporter: around lunchtime, a speeding honda traveling southbound on 7th avenue made an abrupt u-turn and dove against umaffic, jumping the curve at 42nd street, where the first pedestrian was struck. the car continued down the sidewalk for three and a half blocks, mowing down pedestrians along the way. it finally came to a stop after smashing into metal barriers. the driver, 26-year-old richard rojas, ran from the car and tried to outrun police, before being tackled and taken into custody. rojas, a former member of the navy, is being tested for drugs and alcohol. rolice say he has two prior d.w.i. arrests. eyewitnesses tell us if not for those metal posts now underneath that car, there would have been many more injuries, even deaths, scott. they were erected shortly after terrorists overseas began using cars and trucks as weapons of mass destruction. >> pelley:

and in this gruesome surveillance video, you again see that maroon honda accord from moments before barreling into pedestrians, mowing them down. authorities say this is the man who brought times square, one of the most heavily watched, guarded, and surveilled places in the world, to a total and horrific halt. hands out at his sides. the expression on his face snarling. jumping in the air, the car he turned into a weapon. and the carnage behind him. police telling abc news the man, 26-year-old richard rojas, a u.s. citizen and former navy vet from the bronx, told them he had, quote, smoked something before plowing into a packed times square. rojas also told police he thought the world was coming to an end. in the immediate aftermath, pedestrians help police apprehend rojas and force him to the ground. squirming and struggling in this cell phone video, police escort him into a waiting squad car. while all around, unimaginable carnage. >> step back, step back. >> firefighters dousing that car, trying to put out the flames. >> we did get a very quick response from police officers on the scene, f

. >> reporter: without any warning, the driver of this maroon honda made an abrupt u-turn on to a bustlingidewalk on 42nd street, mowing down a crowd of people seen here falling off of the hood of his car. he sped up, barreling through more pedestrians, including 18-year-old alyssa elsman, who died at the scene. this woman is struck as she tries to get away. parts of the car are torn off as the vehicle runs over another fleeing pedestrian. as the car accelerates, people take cover anywhere they can. a block later, the car comes to a crashing halt, slamming into steel barricades put in place to stop terrorist attacks. it all took less than a minute. >> reporter: the suspect then jumps out of his car, running erratically across 45th street. 26-year-old richard rojas is apprehended a few moments later. sources tell cbs news that rojas claimed to have heard voices and that he did it for god. he told police he smoked marijuana laced with p.c.p. before the incident. three people remain in critical condition, anthony, as people come down to times square to memorialize this temporary barricade. >>
