we are now seeing what i think is the best of the polls, a marquette university poll that came out yesterday lead for barack obama. it also showed a 9-point lead for tammy baldwin in that senate race. you'll note that tomorrow barack obama will stand right next to tammy baldwin, the democratic senate candidate and you're starting to see that up-and-down the ticket message coming through. i don't think that anybody would have thought you'd see that even two months ago. now democrats are feeling incredibly confident and i think for some good reason. >> john nichols,

three-point margin to a 14-point lead for president obama. 54-40, that's according to this marquette university poll. meanwhile, in a new pew research poll, president obama is up by eight points nationally among likely voters. and a "usa today"/gallup poll, more than half of independent voters, mitt romney's hidden camera comments did not make a difference at all. 29% say they're less likely to vote for romney because of what they heard. 15% say they are more likely to vote for romney because of the message on those tapes. katty, what's your take on all this? >> i guess the only thing that might reassure the romney campaign is, as joe said earlier, we are still -- well, i guess where joe is, it's probably like 100 days out from the campaign because he's so far away on the west coast. we are still several weeks away from the campaign, and there is time to turn some of this around to get the campaign back on track with the debates. and this is also not because that obama has been performing suddenly brilliantly or that the economy is suddenly picking up at great speed. neither of those two things

the marquette university poll, the new york times with obama at 51% and romney at 49%.uge hill for romney to climb findeed the polls are accurate. steve, you are a native wisconsin guy, what do you make of it? >> i think the marquette poll, they do great pole -- polling, it feels like an outliar, it's 14 points, that's inconsistent with the other polling. but i think it's fair to say that president obama has a lead in wisconsin, which wasn't necessarily the case 4 or 5 months ago. i think that scott walker is right. voters will respond to a message of reform, a strong and bold message. have you seen that both with scott walker and with paul ryan, who remains very popular in the state. >> larry, your take on it? >> i agree, exactly with what steve said. the romney campaign needs to add a lot more substance. they need to direct that substance at this giant gender gap. they have one of the biggest problems with women i have ever seenful they have to do something about it. i also agree and i like the marquette poll, but not this one, it is not a 14-point gap. i think that's
