show, martin bashir. you for joining me tonight. i seem to be missing the spot where parliament had the murdochs tarred and feathered in that room today. how bad did it get for them? >> it was fairly intense, but i have to tell you, lawrence, this was the one occasion where being 80 years of age probably proved to be a positive and distinct advantage. he couldn't remember dates and times, he couldn't remember payments, he couldn't remember individual staff members. and so what we had was this all-powerful media mogul reduced to a frail, elderly man, who couldn't remember a single thing, but he could assert two things. one was that he knew absolutely nothing about illegal phone hacking, he knew nothing about illegal payments to police, he knew nothing about paying private detectives to steal private medical records of politicians and members of the public. he knew nothing about that. he was adamant. and also, second, he was absolutely clear that he's not for resigning. he believes that he should stay at th

martin bashir is host of the "martin bashir show" here on msnbc and knows the world of rupert murdoch well indeed. first of all, explain to us the unique role that murdoch and his holdings and his executives, his editors, had and their relationship with leaders of both parties. >> great to be with you, andrea. when murdoch bought "news of the world" 42 years ago he was an ordinary proprietor but overall, he acquired more and more. finally, 30% of british sky broadcasting. it was so influential and his position in british politics was so influential he was almost like a combination of someone like jack abramoff and a mobster. he had the power to reward people and to punish people. so for example, in 2004, when a cabinet minister called clare short said wasn't it time that "the sun" newspaper stopped featuring semi-naked women on page three of the newspaper, what did they do? edited, by the way, at that time by rebecca brooks. they sent 20 scantily clad women to her office and had loads of photographs everywhere. they described the minister at the time as frumpy, dumpy, fat and ugly. th

joining me now to answer that question, from london, msnbc's martin bashir, and "vanity fair's" contributingellison. she's written extensively on news corp. and the phone hacking scandal. thank you both for being with me. i've read your piece. let me start with you, sara. what was your impression of the temperature today. we saw a man that seemingly didn't know anything, that seemed his age. he's 80, in fact he country stopped them from helping to answer hi -- was this -- the testimony coaching in how to act in front of the grilling? >> i think this is the big question. either that was a brilliant performance, where no one can lay a glove on him, because he didn't know anything and can't speak to any of the details, or he really has lost it. i think that all of my experience with him, and all of the experience of other people who have worked with him say that he is very much in the details of his company and the operations. >> what were your impressions? do you think that he was being gen wine or not? do you think the members of parliament were convinced he didn't know anything? >> i think f

robert moore, martin bashir said how murdoch entertains on an annual basis and anyone who is anyone inhe parliament are there. anyone speaking out against murdoch, but the tide has completely changed in the last two weeks. >> the political culture in britain has been turned on its head. there were politicians who were enthralled to rupert murdoch. they would not only socialize with him, but beg him for favors. he was a frequent visitor to downing street. now the political currents are exactly the opposite. everyone is attacking him. there's a major change there. the political culture has changed, not just for the politicians, but also for the police and journalists. >> michael isikoff -- >> michael, can i add one thing. the challenge to james murdoch's testimony. tom krone, the lawyer for "news of the world" and who signed that statement, when asked about this e-mail, it seems he's a critical player who is not going to allow himself to be thrown under the bus for this. he's the guy. he knows all. you've seen the first sign of it. >> michael, i happen to have that quote. let me show it

martin bashir, the mega panel here in new york, msnbc political analyst karen finney, republican strategist susan del percio and martin. doing a tremendous job in articulating the media, specifically news corp. and power in great britain. is a corrupt government by definition something that can only get worse in the face of a corrupt media and are we now seeing that be revealed? >> interesting to hear rupert murdoch to describe him visy itting downing street the back door both with the previous prime minister gordon brown, the one prior to him, tony blair and the current prime minister david cameron. and on each occasion the members of parliament said, why didn't you come through the front door? and he said, because this is what the inhabitant of number 10 asked me to do. so there was clearly a very close relationship between him and each prime minister. you have to remember that this man's newspapers claimed to be able to swing elections. in 1987 after the general election, the following day, the "sun" newspaper had a front page headline which stead was the "sun "that he won it. not an exa

you can catch him tomorrow filling in for martin bashir on msnbc. ezra, first to you. you write that the republicans are positioned to get the best deal out of this. i'm starting to feel that way. that's why i led the show talking about it tonight. your thoughts on it. why are they positioned well? >> they have the timing and stub stance down. they wanted two things in the last couple of weeks. they didn't know it initially. they needed a series of small deals, because a big deal has taxes in it. they don't want taxes. a series of small deals keeps obama from getting everybody in the room, keeps any political been at this time to strike a grand bargain and keep them from tacking on stimulus or any additives on the deal and keeps him from achieving goals. it's an odd thing because the last election was all about the deficit, but they're in worse shape to reduce the deficit than a series of small deals over the next year or two. >> mr. phillips, will the tea partiers hold the line and not vote for a debt ceiling increase no matter what the package is? let's say you have
