i will tell you one story about martin luther king. when we came up, there were not many courses in college on speechwriting. most of us probably just fell into it. i never started out wanting to be a speechwriter. i wanted to be a journalist, but that is another story. i started writing in the clinton administration for the secretary of health and human services. my idea of a great speech was martin luther king, i have a dream. i started writing speeches for martin luther king, and finding the voice of your speaker is one of the key things to being successful as a speechwriter. after a while, she pulled me aside and said, i like martin luther king, but i am a short, punchy lady and i like short, punchy sentences. i am not martin luther king.
