just to start us off marvin, can 1975? what were you doing then as the war was coming to a rather disappointing and? >> first, let me thank the post and the national press club for inviting me to speak about this very important subject. i want to start by saying that there are many better people than me to be doing this, but i am happy to do it. 1975, i was the chief diplomatic correspondent for cbs. i was based here in washington. i was absorbed with the fact that in my own lifetime there three- there had been major events that affected this country in a profound way. depression. i know i look 39, but i'm really 84. the depression was a very large part of my life as a kid. then there was world war ii. my brother went off to war. my brother-in-law went off to war could we all knew as a nation that we were involved in a war that we had to win. then, there was watergate. and then, there was the vietnam war. two other massive events affecting the way in which this country up to today thinks about going to war, the way we go t

i ain't got over marvin being gone. that's been years.rvin not being here upon as i look at the special, some of the folk it are no longer ear. it makes it more special to have in the election. some of these folks aren't even alive anymore. thankfully, you're still here. some of the folks who are gone are younger than you. how do you process losing not just friends but family? there have been a number. i think rick james -- the list -- too long a list to my mind. >> well, it's painful. but i find that, you know, when -- you know, you show your love to people when they're here. and you zat them whcelebrate th they're here. you know they know you know it. and i know -- it's the love that's there. the motown love that you have. and if they have left -- i mean, we've seen etch ear -- been suing each other for 30 years, but we're best friends to. love overtake it all. takes away a lot of things, the pettiness, the this, the that, so forth. it is what it is. and -- and when we needed something for the show and i just said, i want to tell the tr

his name is marvin lopez but goes by cabrera. tips will help track him down. investigators say lopez shot and killed a young mother on christmas eve. they say he shot yamalith arroyo oue latina restaurant where she worked. today people stopped by to light candles and leave flowers. >> she was a good lady. she was a young lady. and she worked faithfully and she did what she was supposed to do in life be successful. i don't know why someone would have to do this to her. >> police have not said why arroyo was killed. she leaves behind a young child. the restaurant is trying raise money so she can be buried in her native el salvador. >>> three people were shot tonight in southeast. it happened earlier this evening on galveston street near 295. police have a vague description of a suspect, someone seen running away wearing a red polo jacket and jeans. still working to find out how the three victims are doing. >>> the christmas eve murder was one of two homicides in petworth over the past week and the area has seen a spike in violence.

a warrant is now out for the arrest of 35-year-old marvin lopez. he is now charged in the death of 39-year-old arroyo who was shot in the 3900 block of 14th street. there's now a make-shift memorial at the scene. she was one of four people murdered in the district on christmas eve. >>> a taxi driver was robbed and beaten this morning in the congress heights neighborhood of southeast d.c. the strong armed robbery occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of fifth street. police say four people hailed the cab and attacked the driver when he dropped them off. the 3-year-old victim was treated for injuries at ally local hospital. >>> d.c. police have temporarily shut down a popular northwest bar after five people were stabbed there. it happened early saturday morning at mcfadden's restaurant in foggy bottom. so far no one has been arrested. we're had to the victims suffered serious injuries, but all were expected to survive. police chief cathy lanier ordered it closed for 96 hours. >>> so often we hear of firefighters dramatically rescuing people tr
