joining us now, nbc correspondent matt bradley. thank you for being here. many may not be as familiar with the ins and outs of the german government as you and i are. can you walk us through what will go on next there? >> reporter: jonathan, you gave a very good summary. i've been reading some of the coverage this morning. as you mentioned, the chancellor has not been cchosen. angela merkel remain the chancellor. she's been in that position for 16 years. she's going to stay in that post until the negotiations are finished. last time it lasted for six months. angela merkel could still be in office for quite a while. it was a pretty big defeat for angela merkel's christian democrats. they're the weekest they've been perhaps in history. for the social democrats they're eenl a hair ahead of angela merkel's party and that gives them somewhat of an advantage when it comes to forming this coalition, but it doesn't mean they're going to be ushered into power in some sort of winner-takes-all scenario. even when they do form the coalition, even when there is a new ch

and it's nbc foreign correspondent matt bradley is in berlin with the latest. e the national election. what are you hearing from folks? >> the polls opened at 8:00 just a couple of hours ago. they're going to be going all day long. this election is a big one. and not just for germany, not just for your, but really, for the entire world. but it's kind of interesting here. when you talk about the successor to angela merkel after 16 years, that is the story here. it's not so much about who's going to be six eating angela merkel, that angela merkel after all that time is going to be bowing out. because the two main contenders here to replace her are two men who are going to be competing -- who are competing essentially to look as much like angela merkel as they possibly can. they are not trying to come up with some visionary opposition to her rule. they're not trying to say that they're going to introduce radical changes. and i told you yesterday, there is no barbarians at the gate in this election. there is no populist left or right that's trying to challenge the e

matt bradley is in berlin with a preview of all of this. the election is tomorrow. only chancellor they've ever known. >> reporter: yeah, i mean, you guys keep using words like reign, and, you know, royalty, that she's the queen. that's very apt. i mean, she's been here for 16 years, as chancellor, that's almost the longest chancellorship of any chancellor in german history and of course she's had sometimes really positive, sometimes really negative, tough relationships with four very different u.s. presidents from george w. bush to barack obama to donald trump. now to joe biden. so she's out on the campaign trail, as you can see, but she's not running. what's interesting about this very staid, more unpredictable, low level, not very -- i should say not very sexy election here is that all of these candidates are trying to compete to try to capture angela merkel's legacy. they are trying to position themselves as merkel-like as they possibly can be. that's what's interesting here. this election doesn't see any barbarians at the gates. there's no rapidly far left or f

let's bring in matt bradley, live in berlin for more on this. matt?talking about this with jonathan a little while ago. if you squint, this kind of looks like a big change of government that results from fred's election. if you allow me to pour cold water for a moment here. what you are seeing is germans voting for continuity. for one thing, olaff schols, he's already in the government. there is going to be some long negotiations that are going to go into forming a coalition government. we have an early glimpse of what's going on and it does not look pretty. this is going to be an acrimonous debate. again, it's going to be a coalition government which means it's going to look a lot like the current government. they're going to be bonding together and aligning together all of these parties across the political spectrum. some of the smaller parties are in position to be king maker. the greens are going to be on the left along with a centrist libertarian party. really whatever that's going to happen is going to be about continuity and this government loo

msnbc foreign correspondent matt bradley is in london with the latest. do we know if the u.s. government has responded? >> reporter: yeah, i mean, we are hearing various things. you heard from those interviews. they have been speaking to various media and one of the things that we have been hearing most is that the family does want compensation. they are not satisfied with this extraordinary apology, though they were surprised by it, just as the media and everybody has been, this incredible reversal that you rarely see from the u.s. government on something like this from a drone strike that killed so many civilians. one of the interesting things is that this family, of course, they were very afraid of the fact that they had been smeared as isis-k members. remember, even though isis-k, they were responsible for that massive suicide blast after kabul fell that killed nearly 200 afghans and 13 u.s. troops, isis-k are also enemies of the taliban, which are now ruling all of afghanistan. so they were actually, this family, according to some media, were very p

let's go to nbc's matt bradley monitoring this from berlin. welcome to you.the results stan right now. do you have exit polling? >> reporter: yes. exit polling just came out. the polls just closed a couple hours ago. what we are seeing so far is about a quarter of the votes going toward the cdu. the party of the outgoing chancer who has been in power. the other party also appears to be in poll position to form a coalition. whatever happens here it is going to have to be a coalition. that is how german politics is run and how it's been run almost entirely since then of world war ii. that means this is going to be a consensus or almost consensus driven governance system. you could read this as one of the most indecisive election results so far in recent german memory. one reason for that is because all of the main parties who were leading especially the two i just mentioned were trying their best in an almost embarrassingly ingratiatingly way to style themselves as almost identical to angela merkel in terms of policy and ideology. this is a country that has dem
