nbc's matt bradley is covering this story from jerusalem for us.att, how is that pressure makinging the relationship between -- affecting the relationship between israel and the united states? >> reporter: the big question here for israelis and americans is what's going to happen next in this growing spat between washington and jerusalem. these are two very close allies. remember, at the outset of this, after october 7th, joe biden came out and offered just full support to the israelis and to prime minister benjamin netahyahu. that has all changed in dramatic fashion. last couple of days we saw benjamin netanyahu firing what amounts to the largest, worst broadside against the biden administration that we've seen even in the past several months where the relationship has been more or less privately unraveling. now we heard from benjamin netanyahu releasing a video scolding the president and the white house, the whole administration, for not bringing these weapons that were promised on time. we heard then from the white house saying that quite litera

joining me now from tel aviv is matt bradley. what are the terms of this local pause, if you want to call it that, and what impact will it have on getting more aid into gaza? >> as you said, it's a local pause. it is without any real end date. and it was announced a day later. apparently this started yesterday, saturday, and it is going indefinitely or until further notice. it is a local pause. it is just for that one road leading to the crossing that is one of the main crossings for shipments into the gaza strip. that road goes kind of all the way into the heart of gaza. this is just right on time. because of what we are hearing earlier this week is that gazans, large parts of the gaza strip are facing catastrophic hunger and malnutrition. and that is something that is a particularly affecting children. there some 8000 children, according to the world health organization, who shown signs of acute malnutrition. it comes as we are seeing an uptick in some of the israeli deaths in the ongoing fighting in the gaza strip. they announ

. >> joining us now from jerusalem is nbc's matt bradley. matt, great seeing you. the status of this latest peace deal? >> reporter: well, it sounds as though the peace deal is closer to being realized than we saw in november. talking about this two days ago, it looked like these two sides were further apart than after. after the resignation of benny gantz who was considered a moderate, after those hostages being rescued in the gaza strip, it looked like these two sides were further apart than ever. now it looks like we're seeing some kind of agreement, some tenuous steps to what could lead to a cease-fire temporary and what could lead to a permanent cease-fire. that's what was in the document presented to the u.n. security council. with all the pressure brought to bare by the international community and the biden administration who have been pushing this for the last two weeks -- on may 31st biden said this is israel's plan. this is a plan they presented and they agreed to it. that language was already in the u.n. resolution passed by the security council. now, wh

we go to nbc's foreign correspondent matt bradley in london, matt? >> reporter: well, this is a huge day for israelis and one of jubilation. and you can literally see and hear israelis celebrating in the streets of tel-aviv and on the beaches. this is a moment that a lot of people have been waiting for for eight months to the day. we saw on october 7th, the original attack, that killed 1,200 israelis. they kidnapped more than 200 people. now four of them have been freed. just to give you a sense of just how illusive this goal has been for so long, in the eight months we've seen the israelis fighting in the gaza strip, they've killed more than 36,000 civilians, they've only managed to free by their own hands three of those remaining hostages. there are thought to be 84 remaining. now that number has more than doubled, and actually, there was a lot of pessimism around this operation. now it looks as those benjamin netanyahu right when he needed it most has a success story in the military operations in the gaza strip. >> thank you, nbc's foreign corresp

here's nbc news international correspondent matt bradley. well, israel's assault on the gaza strip was continuing yesterday. some 27 people were killed in various attacks throughout the gaza strip, including on two schools now. of those, 27 people killed, ten were members of the family of ismail haniyeh. he's considered the political leader of hamas, and one of those was his sister and we've also heard from the israeli defense forces chief of staff. he said that the operations in rafah in the southern part of the gaza strip, were winding up and that the idf had managed to destroy many of the main fighting bodies of hamas that had been resisting israeli attacks there. and so this is something that we've heard from benjamin netanyahu himself just a couple of days ago, that the more intensive phase of the operations were winding up and so israel might be able to concentrate more of its forces on the continued and more intense fighting that has ramped up over the border between israel and lebanon, specifically with that other iran backed group,

let's go to matt bradley who was in jerusalem for us. give us the back story as to why benny ganz is resigning. >> this was all supposed to happen yesterday and it was delayed by a full day. because of the hostage rest, those four people who were rescued including one who was a symbol of the hostage crisis. this was something that was supposed to happen for three weeks. he had telegraphed this saying if it did not happen, if he did not get satisfaction for one of his key demands by june 8th, which was yesterday, he was going to design. that demand was that he wanted benjamin netanyahu to come out and explain his plan for governing the gaza strip after the war ends. this is one of the chief concerns that the biden administration has had with benjamin netanyahu as well and they have not gotten anything action on that either. there's been a lot of talk on the international community about this war and what is going to happen when or if the israelis achieve their goal of finally dismantling hamas. benny ganz is a hugely respected figure. he

. >> 20 now from tel aviv is nbc news international correspondent matt bradley.sident biden confidently put forth that proposal from the white house back in may but now he seems to be retreating from that confident posture. what is the latest on these talks? >> reporter: there was that burst of optimism earlier this week, especially right after the un security council seemed to almost unanimously bless this proposal that joe biden, as you mentioned, had put in the mouths of the israelis back on may 31 when he presented this a couple of weeks ago. he said this is an israeli plan and ever since then, we have been hearing american officials like antony blinken, the secretary of state, who has been traveling around the region, his eighth trip to the region, trying to secure some sort of deal. he had said that hamas are the only outliers. israel had already signed onto this. it does not seem that way. even after joe biden presented it back on may 31, the israelis spent the better part of the following week carefully blocking back this idea that they have exceeded the

matt bradley joins us now from jerusalem. we have a statement from hamas. what have they said?>> reporter: it sounds like they just said that they and islamic jihad, they have submitted their response. so we haven't heard what that response is going to be. they have indicated they have some favorable opinions towards this and the u.n. resolution that passed with an overwhelming majority, 14 of the 15 u.n. security council members voted in favor of it. we're now waiting on stronger word whether or not they are going to accept this deal. we're also waiting to hear from the israelis. even though that resolution made clear they exceeded to the deal as laid out in that resolution, we still don't necessarily know whether or not they are going to accept it because in the past, when joe biden, if you remember on may 31st kames out and said this is israel's deal. and over the next week, we benjamin netanyahu and his allies pouring cold water on that of whether or not they accepted it. so again, we have heard favorable noises from both sides. the most favorable we have heard since the la

matt bradley is in jerusalem.omising, what are we hearing from blinken on where these talks stand? >> reporter: it's not just antony blinken is essentially saying, this is hamas who's at fault here, hamas is the one who needs to exceed to the deal. they are outstanding in the negotiations. here's a little bit more of what he said in doha. >> hamas could have answered with a single word, yes. instead, hamas waited nearly two weeks. and then proposed more changes. a number of which go beyond positions it had previously taken and accepted. >> reporter: now it sounds as those he's saying, hamas is to blame for the adoption of this proposal. at the same time, we got a statement from a senior member of hamas, senior political figure. he spoke with al jazeera, and he said that their position has always been the same. it has been entirely consistent, and we have gotten this information as well from nbc news saying that they were disputing the time line for the actual end of the war. not a temporary cease fire, but the end

matt bradley joins from jerusalem. secretary blinken now meeting with israel's prime minister and defense minister about a potential cease-fire. nbc news also learned that u.s. officials have discussed a potential unilateral agreement with hamas to free american hostages. what more do we know? >> reporter: it sounds as though we have contradicting information, and it's not that unusual here. we heard from secretary of state antony blinken. ann tree ya mitchell said to him, is israel already approving this plan? ever since joe biden introduced it himself saying it was israel's plan. we heard from blinken that israel has already approved the plan. if israel goes ahead of hamas accepts it, it becomes the rule. it becomes the law of the land. and there will be this swap. we have heard from benjamin netanyahu once again. he doesn't sound like he's going to be agreeing with the plan. he told this to local israeli media. he said any plan that ends the war in the gaza strip and doesn't dismantle or destroy hamas first is not a

nbc's matt bradley joins us from jerusalem on all of this. , good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. as you said, israel's top military leaders in washington meeting u.s. officials as the war in gaza rages with strikes overnight. and it comes as the family of one of those american hostages release new video shot by hamas showing his abduction on october 7th. they're hoping it will spur calls to release those remaining hostages. but a warning, this video is very graphic. today israel's assault on the gaza strip continues. the idf striking two school compounds overnight. attacks the civil defense, the emergency service killed 14 people and left several injured. israel's military said the two schools had been used by hamas as a shield for its terrorist activities. the war in gaza, among the topics that israel's defense minister discussing with top officials on a visit to washington, including secretary of state, antony blinken. >> he is emphasizing a few things in his meeting with the defense minister. number one, our ongoing commitmen

nbc's matt bradley filed this report from tel aviv. >> reporter: this assault is well into the eighthonth. benjamin benjamin netanyahu dissolved the war cabinet. this was expected ever since benny gantz was one of three voting members and resigned in protest about a week ago. when he did this, he apologized to the israeli public and the families of the hostages. he said israeli politicians failed them and not resolving the war. without him now, it looks like there are two voting members and eventually now retired and replaced by a kitchen cabinet which is a consultation tcabine. we don't know who is going to be part of this, but it sounds as they it will not be including, we don't know evenntirely yet, more extreme ministers in netanyahu's government. the war cabinet was created to exclude those people and reassure the israeli people and the war issues were in the hands of benny gagantz. it is unclear what this means for the war. it is clear without gantz, that netanyahu has few opponents and will be facing off against his own extreme right wing. his own right-wing allies. again, we d

nbc's matt bradley is reporting from tel aviv. gabe gutierrez is at the white house. with one of those hostages' family, the american citizen, hersh goldberg polin. >> i spoke with parents rachel and john, and they had some very interesting things to say about their plight and how they're pushing this cause. they've been outspoken from the beginning, pushing the cause not just here in israel where there are lots of families, of course, but also in the united states. they actually just got back from a trip to washington, d.c. where they met with politicians and the biden administration. they said they were fruitful meetings and they feel as though the biden administration is on their side. i spoke with john a little bit about what he sees as the stark choice that is facing policymakers both in the u.s. and here in israel. here is what he told me. so we also have been hearing from the hostage family forum, and they've been saying one of the things they're mourning z just now is the death of one of the fighters from the israeli side who was just killed in the gaza strip.

. >> joining me now from jerusalem, matt bradley. welcome.osal? >> reporter: alex, we heard from hamas last night. they were saying essentially they rejected what antony blinken was saying, that they are coming up with new demands, they were pushing the envelope when it came to the negotiations. they said their demands have been consistent from the beginning. nbc news had their own information saying they were asking for a change in the time line. this comes from people familiar with the conversations. they were asking for an alternate -- changes in the time line with regard to a permanent cease-fire. not just a temporary cease-fire, but when would a permanent cease-fire be imposed? when would the israelis move their forces out of the gaza strip for good? they said this was our consistent policy from the beginning of the negotiations. they have said they don't want to see a temporary cease-fire, and they will not let any of their hostages go or settle for a pause in the fighting unless they see a permanent pause, a permanent end to the war in

nbc's matt bradley is reporting from jerusalem for us, this was absolutely the most complex rescue operation from the war so far. what are we learning about how it unfolded? >> reporter: >> complex. it took weeks of preparation. they made mock models of buildings in order to practice the raid. this was conduct bid a special counter terrorism, it was across different branches of the civil defense in israel. so this was a very complicated operation. use mentioned earlier, this killed more than 270 palestinians, this according to the gazan ministry of health officials. of those dead, dozens were children. it's being celebrated in israel as a huge victory. this could create problems for antony blinken, the secretary of state who is once again in the region trying to shore up support for a hostage negotiation deal, in something that would resemble a temporary cease fire. those goals have evaded him up until now, and it doesn't look like the two sides are any closer. this incident, this rescue is probably going to make things more difficult because now hamas, and other people in gaza are outraged
