matt, what are you hearing from officials? >> reporter: that they're frankly tired of this chris. police are stationed at the end of the block keeping an eye out here in the hopes of preventing another fire happening. the latest fired happened on the 400 block of beckly place. this one started in the back of the home and quickly spread to the roof. no injuries but this neighborhood has really been through a lot. third fire in four days. first one on saturday then again on monday. in all, six homes damaged out here. we saw fire investigators trying to pull away any evidence from the scene. 20 people have been forced out of their homes because of these fires. the bulk of that number was due to power outages resulting from the fire and the effort to contain them. some of those folks are back in their homes. coming up at 4:30 we've been talking to neighbors who are completely fed up. while these fires are still under investigation, they are confident this is a whole lot more than coincidence. now i'm live in chester, matt delucia, "nbc 10 news." >>> 4:04. we're watching a story unfold

matt. that was the devil. >> chilling description there. chris palone is in new york. good day. what's the latest from there? >> reporter: alex as you can see, state police are maintaining a checkpoint here on the northern part of the perimeter inside which they are searching for david sweat. this area is about 22 square miles and goes from this road right next to me along the salmon river down to the town of duane where police are conducting checks where they march across the landscape. it's a difficult search. this is thick forest land and the weather is not helping out at all. it has been raining heavily all day and that affects the ability of police dogs to find a scent. it also affects the ability for police helicopters to fly. we haven't seen any helicopters out yet this morning. when richard matt was killed on friday, they believed he was traveling with sweat though they have no visual confirmation of that but at this point that's their best guess. >> we've established a hard perimeter and law enforcement line of sight to line of sight throughout -- considered a very larg

matt: we will talk trade foreign affairs and more with chris coons.k will be talking to him and the nations capital. -- in the nations capital ♪. ♪ announcer: live from bloomberg headquarters in new york. this is "market makers," with erik schatzker and stephanie ruhle. matt: good morning i matt miller. olivia: i'm olivia sterns. it is my lucky day to be here with matt miller. matt: i look at top stories. the fbi has joined the hunt for the man who opened fire in a black church in trust in carolina -- in charleston, north south carolina. the suspect has been identified as a white man in his 20's. police released the surveillance camera photos. they say he attended a prayer meeting at the church for almost an hour before opening fire. authorities are calling it a hate crime. >> this is an unspeakable act. somebody filled with hate and with a deranged mind. matt: authorities say they thought they tracked the suspect but he then got away. another sign that inflation may take time to reach the fed target, the cost of leaving -- the cost of living rose 1/1

matt. >> all right. chris jansing in charleston. chris, thank you very much. federal officials are opening a hate crime investigation into this shooting. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good day to you. officials say they're following several very strong leads. they have identified several possible subjects of the investigation. because they have the surveillance video to go on, because they have the witnesses, because they have the car that was in the parking lot, this gunman made no efforts to conceal his identity. atf people are checking the shell casings, witnesses are being asked for their descriptions. so they have several potential names that they're checking out now. obviously they're not releasing any of those names because they don't know whether the people they're looking at were involved or not. but they're confident that they're going to find out who did this and make an arrest pretty soon based on all the evidence they have. the fbi is attempting to enhance the surveillance
