matt. >> all right. chris jansing in charleston. chris, thank you very much. federal officials are opening a hate crime investigation into this shooting. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on that. pete, what can you tell us? >> reporter: matt, good day to you. officials say they're following several very strong leads. they have identified several possible subjects of the investigation. because they have the surveillance video to go on, because they have the witnesses, because they have the car that was in the parking lot, this gunman made no efforts to conceal his identity. atf people are checking the shell casings, witnesses are being asked for their descriptions. so they have several potential names that they're checking out now. obviously they're not releasing any of those names because they don't know whether the people they're looking at were involved or not. but they're confident that they're going to find out who did this and make an arrest pretty soon based on all the evidence they have. the fbi is attempting to enhance the surveillance
