abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live along highway 101. t got some new details on the driver. hi, matt. >> reporter: hi, good morning, jessica. i do have new information on the driver. also have new information on the victim. i was told by the chp that this is an elderly man who was hit and killed here on southbound 101 just past the oyster point boulevard on-ramp to the freeway here. and we are told that the coroner is here and they're taking away the body, so all lanes will be open. the on-ramp will be open as well. the chp also told me new information, correcting an inaccuracy from earlier. the driver was just giving a friend a ride. he was not working for a ride hailing service. he hit something on southbound 101 but continued on to drop off his passenger in millbrae, turn back to the scene, unsure if he hid a pedestrian or animal. he didn't find anything and eventually called 911 just before 3:15 this morning. that was 45 minutes after the chp says he hit the person. he ended up meeting the chp at the hall of justice in san francisco.

abc 7 news reporter matt keller has details on how you can help. matt? >> reporter: jessica, this is an unsolved murder. no arrests yet. the grandfather who helped raise him just spoke to us inside this san jose church, and he gave an emotional plea to the public to help him find the killer. >> it still hurts, and it's going to hurt the rest of my life. he was loved by everybody. >> reporter: that's carlos who is a grandfather of joseph viramontes who was found at an elementary school in san jose on march 25th. he was shot to death. no arrests have been made. police say it's an open investigation. he was a student and worked as a dishwasher at local hospital and played football for the 49ers until he was 16 and his grandfather putting up a $5,000 award hoping it will lead to the arrest of the person responsible for the murder of his son. >> i want to know before i die who did this. >> whoever did this, please come forward. that's all i ask. >> reporter: san jose police told me the reward is a personal choice made by the grandfather and we hope that this

abc 7 news reporter matt keller live to explain the effort by santa clara county, matt. >> reporter: firefighters from the santa clara fire department left at 3:00 to head to the fire and they have no idea when they'll return home. when thousands of homes are threatened by massive wild fire and the whole town of mariposa is under evacuation orders, help is needed. this morning dozens of firefighters from santa clara county fire agencies answered the call and headed to the fire just outside of yosemite. they face a stiff challenge. >> if it's getting into the mortality area, you're talking about dead, large stands of dead trees that are never going to come back. provides a significant fuel source. big timber fuel source. >> reporter: san jose, mountainview, santa clara, palo alto, sunnyvale, and milpitas make up the strike teams. they'll pitch in on the front lines as long as they're needed. but the firefighters staying behind are also working extra hard during fire season. >> we sent 40 firefighters out, that leaves 40 spots here at home that have to be filled. oftentimes filled with

. >> matt keller live with more on the impact this is going to have on visitors. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and jessica. the fireball ride is right here on the boardwalk behind the giant dipper. they did close it last night so they could do an inspection, but they're waiting until the daylight hours to go and check out the ride to make sure that it is safe for riders. of course, this isn't the only place that has a ride like this. in sacramento, as you said, the fireball ride at the california state fair was shut down last night following the devastating accident at the ohio state fair. officials say independent preopening inspections are held on the 100 rides at the california state fair as well as random spot infections throughout each day. the ride in sacramento is similar but nomthe same as the one in ohio, however, they were manufactured by the same company. >> it's not going to run until they tell us what happened in ohio and the factory says it's okay to operate. >> california's great america has a similar ride. no word whether that ride will be open today. ee have no timelin

matt keller is live at the restaurant. >> what a mess here. they still have caution tape up to keep people away. and they have the fire hydrant here that was sheered off. you can see one of the pieces broken off during the crash. then you have the newspaper stand that was knocked on its side. but this isn't even the worst of it. check this out. this is the restaurant, all this damaged stuff on the ground, and then when you come up to the door, they put up a sign saying somebody mistook us for a 24-hour drive-thru restaurant. we apologize for any inconvenience. check out the video of the vehicle behind all this damage. the red suv crashed into los gatos cafe early sunday morning. driver was taken to the hospital. she was stable. firefighters were on the scene checking out the structure. the entrance is severely damaged. the restaurant is usually open from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is known for its big breakfast. a speed limit is only 15 miles per hour on this stretch of north santa cruz avenue at the edge of downtown los gatos. no word on if s

matt keller is there now. >> i just got an update from firefighters.the substance that caused this hazmat is actually pepper spray. it was sprayed in the front of this lobby here. they evacuated the first floor of this building. probably about an hour and a half ago. 29 people evacuated from this building. the people on the second and third floor are told to shelter in place. these are the people who are evacuated. there's another extended stay america building right next to it, so those people are able to hang out in the lobby. we're told only one person neated to be treated for the incident. they believe that man was around the pepper spray. he refused to be taken to the hospital. he was treated here on the scene. this has obviously caused a big scene. we had a big response from firefighters. they blocked off san ignacio avenue. that was blocked off. san jose police have some cones out and they're turning people around in the northbound direction. but we were told by firefighters that they expect the situation to be over soon because all these firefi

. >> matt keller live for us in san jose. matt. >> reggie and natasha, mail theft has become a real problem here in the south bay and all across the bay area. this time, four mail trucks were broken into in this neighborhood in just the past month. 350 people in the willow glen neighborhood here in san jose were notified that they could be victims. postal inspector says the thieves broke into the trucks when the carrier stepped away to make a delivery. some residents told us they do most of their important business online rather than through the mail, they're still concerned about the crime. >> you don't know what you don't know. we got stuff from our insurance company. we were waiting for an authorization. we were like, well, did it get taken? >> yeah, a federal felony to break into a postal vehicle and steal mail. if convicted, the thief could face up to five years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine. the postal service is offering a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of this thief or thieves. repo

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live for us this morning. matt. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. this is awesome. i'm here with all of my friends. i can get an awe back in the studio from reggie and natasha, poor matt he's all by himself. but i've got my chair so i have the potential fosh a lot of friends to be sitting out here watching the parade here in morgan hill as part of the fun for the morgan hill independence day parade. you've got your seats already out here and this is going to be a big parade. organizers are expecting 50,000 people to be out here today. and that's part of the fun. everyone's leaving their chairs out here and some of them left them out here starting in may, big chairs, little chairs, all kind of chairs along the mile-plus route. some even block off their spots with caution tape or chain them together. basically if you leave your chair, it will be here waiting for you today for the parade. so why would people do this? this is one of the oldest fourth of july traditions in california. morgan hills indep

. >> matt keller is in santa cruz with more on the impact this will have for visitors. >> good morning, jessica and reggie. the fireball ride is right behind the giant dipper here in the middle of the boardwalk. last night, they shut it down and they're waiting until today to do inspections before they let riders back on. santa cruz isn't the only place shutting down this ride. at the california state fair in sacramento, officials closed their version of the fireball last night. the ride is not exactly the same as the one in ohio, but they're both manufactured by the same company in holland. officials say independent inspections are done on the 100 rides at the state fair before it opens. they also do random spot inspections every day. however, after the incident in ohio, they just shut down their ride in sacramento. >> not going to run until they tell us what happened in ohio and the factory tells us it's okay to operate. >> the california's great america has a similar ride called delirium. pbe open today and no word on a timeline at the boardwalk. we were told they're

reporting live in los gatos, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> we hope so, matt. thank you. >>> new details on a stolen train used for children's carnivals. authorities have found the train in a trailer in walnut creek. sky 7 was over boulevard circle near i-680 this morning as authorities searched the stolen trailer. the trailer was taken from a parking lot in pleasant hill over the weekend t.carried a train that was supposed to be one of the many attractions at the bayview hunter's point summer carnival. on the peninsula this man terry lee hill jr. is under arrest in connection with a string of suspicious fires in palo alto. police say all four fires were set on the same day near the stanford shopping center. they broke out early friday morning between 2:00 and 5:30 a.m. nobody was hurt. police say the 23-year-old suspect was caught on surveillance video. they released this screening image. police say a car, a dumpster, a garage and some plants were damage the in the fires. >>> a warning today if you're headed to starbucks to get some work done. the coffee chain
