matt keller is live in the santa cruz mountains right now. matt, what's the update? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. i have an important update to pass along would you. i just talked with cal fire and they say currently in a rescue operation to save a firefighter who fell down a ravine, they don't know his condition, they haven't reached him yet, they're trying to get to him and get him out and see how he's doing. no word on how -- if he's injured or what they're facing, but he did fall down a ravine and they're trying to get to him. they say they are currently in a rescue operation. another person, an inmate with a hand crew team out here, was injured as well. smoke inhalation, so they're dealing with a lot of smoke. behind me you can see what they're dealing with as well with the flames in the trees and in the brush, the deep brush out here. we did talk to the cal fire aist cyst ant chief and he told us what he's facing. >> it's kind of hard to see at night in these steep canyons, we have an access issues and as you can see behind me there's steep and

matt keller live at the command post on bear creek road. d morning, reggie and jessica. behind me you can see the flames are burning here [ no audio ] >> looks like we're having some trouble -- >> we're trying to see if what happens we can hear him again. matt, are you there? >> reporter: sorry. i'm here. can you a hear me? >> yes. go for it. >> reporter: okay. i'm not sure if you're able to see this, but you have some flames burning here in bear creek canyon and the mountainside here, the hillside that just looks like hot coals and it's smoldering here. we have 150 firefighters battling this fire. i talked with cal fire and the santa cruz county sheriff's department and i want to get some clarification of what we've been trying to figure out this morning about mandatory evacuations and advisory evacuations. santa clara county sheriff's office told me that they have about 100 to 200 residents up here that they are -- that are under a mandatory evacuation order. so they're trying to get those people out and i've been told that they have been

one lane in a lot of areas as matt keller mentioned. this is a heavily forested area from our video. it won't be easy to get fire crews there, and that being said, it's not an extremely populated area, so i guess we have good news and bad news as far as that is concerned. and obviously, those winds are helping out as well. if we do want to take a look at our traffic maps here, i can show you exactly what areas we are talking about. i'll zoom in, and we're really talking about between highway 17 and state route 9, so between the summit and the boulder creek area, and it's pretty much even with the south end of the lexington reservoir. it's not too far from skyline and bear creek road, and again, these are smaller, very mountainous roads that are under evacuation here this morning. here's the list. bear creek canyon road, deer creek road, rons road, don road, lost valley road, and as soon as i get more information this, i'll pass it along and put it out on social media, but that's where we are right now. >> we cannot stress enough those r

matt keller, abc 7 news. >>> matt, thank you. in sonoma county evacuees are back home this morning.vacuation boundaries and road closures have changed. crews are working to remove brush and debris from the roads. the county of sonoma website has an updated list. we have it as well, abc7news.com. >>> breaking news pg&e working to clear downed power lines in napa. this is not fire related. it's after a crash, a car crashed into a power pole there, and it happened just after midnight. look at this picture here on california boulevard between stadium avenue and industrial way. police say a big rig was trying to avoid the wires as it backed away from the area of the crash and then even more wires got stuck on top of the big rig and were pulled down. because of those wildfires in the north bay pg&e is providing help in the napa area. they were able to get there pretty quickly and luckily no one was seriously hurt. the area is still blocked off. >> the nuns fire in sonoma county stands at over 48,600 acres burned at 40% containment. much of the area under mandatory evacuation. and that inc

we've been talking to matt keller who is getting really close to the scene here, he has been calling in on the phone. this is really not a hugely densely residential area, but there are a lot of folks who live here, but these are really some mountainous roads between the boulder creek area and the summit. between state route 9 and state route 17. he mentioned a little earlier this morning there is a lot of construction of course we just had all of those slides last winter with the rainy season. i actually do have a little bit of new information from chp, they started getting calls about a house fire around 10:30 last night and that is what spread to the vegetation and that is what we're dealing with right now. they have shut down the construction on state route 9. so caltrans picked that up at alba, they have that roadway back open. for folks trying to evacuate that is not going to be a concern for you on state route 9, you should be able to get through there freely, those crews picked up early in morning. we do have additional closures in the area as well. bear creek which is sort o

abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in the santa cruz mountains this morning. good morning, matt jr good morning, natasha and reggie. these are serious charges. the suspect is facing 14 felonies related to arson and burglary. his first hearing is scheduled for 8:15 this morning here in santa cruz county. sheriffs investigators believe 54-year-old marlon coy set the fire in the area below diane's way near boulder creek based on interviews with three people who saw it happen. they say coy was in a relationship with a woman where the fire originated about you there had been some sort of dispute. he was arrested the day after the fire started not for arson but because he allegedly stole jewelry from an evacuated home. coy bases five felony counts in connection to the fire and nine felonies for the alleged burglaries. the bear fire destroyed two homes, four outbuildings, five rvs and 17 vehicles. several firefighters were also injured battling the bear fire. reporting live no santa cruz, matt keller, abc 7 news. >>> the tubbs and pocket fires in napa and sonoma count

[ inaudible ]. >> that's pretty evident. >> reporter: pretty evident indeed. the air canada flight from montreal had received permission to land from sfo when air traffic control tried to make a change. this he repeated the instructions five times and without a response a supervisor used a flashing red light to alert the crew to go around. air canada jet landed safely just before 9:30 never having acknowledged the orders. you will remember air canada was involved in another incident at sfo back in july. at that time an air canada plane came within 59 feet of crash landing into other planes at sfo. as for this latest incident air canada told abc 7 news upon landing the crew was informed the tower had attempted unsuccessfully to contact the aircra

abc 7 news reporter matt keller just spoke with a sergeant. he joins us live from the san jose police headquarters. matt? >> reporter: kristen, we learned this morning an officer was hit by a car during this operation and he was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. and i was just told by a police sergeant here at san jose pd that they're still looking for that driver, he's wanted for asau assault with a deadly weapon. sunday night was fast and furious on san jose streets. san jose police along with the chp, santa clara county sheriff's office and morgan hill police targeted racers and sideshows. >> it's not safe. >> reporter: this video shows the operation on hosteder road near 680. hundreds were involved last night and tracked some of them onto capital expressway. >> with the advent of how well people can communicate with each other, the sideshows pop up all over the bay area. and san jose is just like any other city in in the bay area. >> reporter: more of these sideshows are popping up in san jose. this is video from october 21st and 22

. >> that's where we find abc 7 news reporter matt keller who is live in fairfield with more. hi, matt. >> reporter: good morning. we're in suisan valley, you can see the suisan valley road is blocked by this police officer. we have a lot of people coming here trying to get up this road but the fire is right up over this hill right here. there was a mandatory evacuation order that came last night just before 11:00 and they told everybody to get out immediately. hopefully everybody listened to that and left the area because obviously very serious. we know that there's structure protection going on right now. so many people impacted by this fire, the atlas fire moving into the green valley area west of green valley road from mason north to valley ann lane. i spoke with one evacuee this morning, she said this area burned back in 2008 her home survived then, but they are not so sure now, they are staying at their car, others are in evacuation centers at several areas, an evacuation center is open at the solano county fairgrounds in vallejo. the hope is that favorable weather condit

that's where we find abc 7 news reporter matt keller live with the story. matt? >> reporter: kristen, the water tender is about ten feet off the road up here. this is a major scene. the chp is doing their investigation. while helicopters are dropping water on the nearby nuns fire. the fires in the north bay have been relentlessly destroying homes, businesses and lives. this morning, at about 6:45, firefighters were called to aid one of the helpers working the nuns fire. cal fire says a private water tender driver was heading down oakville grade road, about two miles west of highway 29 in napa county, when the vehicle slid off the side of the embankment and flipped over on to its top. >> this morning, we tragically lost a member of our fire fighting community. >> reporter: cal fire says they don't know why the driver went off the road, but they will look into the possibility fatigue was a factor. >> there's been no break for these firefighters since the fires erupted last sunday evening. and so, yes, people are getting tired and that is a factor that we are aware

reporting live in felton, matt keller, abc 7 news. >>> thank you, matt. in the east bay dublin residents are waking up in their homes after being evacuated yesterday by fast moving grass fire. exactly where the fire was burning. the 116-acre fire started at about 4:00 p.m. northeast of downtown. crowes aggressively attacked the fire. the evacuation was lifted just after 5:30 and that fire is now 75% contained. >>> a couple is answering questions about a lawsuit filed against pg&e. >> coffey park was one of the hardest hit neighborhoods by the tubbs fire last week and the couple claims pg&e high-voltage power lines came into contact with dry vegetation thereby sparking multiple fires. pg&e officials have not commented on that, said they will not speculate on the cause of those fires yet. but, meanwhile, pg&e does say crews have restored electricity to 97% of its customers in the north bay. in addition cal fire has given access to about 6,000 homes. officials expect to restore power to those customers by tomorrow. pg&e says it hopes to gain access to remain

i'm matt keller in for eric.y where two large wildfires erupted tonight, one burning off of highway 128 and tubbs lane. evacuations have been ordered. the other just north of napa on atlas peak road. that 200 acre fire senior threatening structures. high winds are making conditions difficulty for firefighters. there are reports of ash flying as far as south as san rafael. this is new video just into the newsroom from david gibson of the atlas fire. david joins us now on the phone and david, first, i want to make sure you're in a safe place? >> yeah, matt. we're definitely safe. we live in downtown napa. it's raining ash in our yard as we speak right now. >> how far away from downtown napa is this fire from you. >> not far. maybe five or ten miles north of us. i was just on my way home from work, i had a late night at the winery and saw fire coming over the hillside. called my wife and started filming as much video as i could. some of the flames could be 50 feet tall krefting the hillside. the video is shot over t
