inside studio 1-a, i'm matt lauer with savannah guthrie and al roker. underway into what caused that crash. >> an incredible impact and explosion that followed. >> let's go down to nbc's tom costello, he's covering the crash for us from washington. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we know this was u.p.s. flight 1354 inbound where u.p.s. has the headquarters and their main cargo operations. inbound to birmingham, alabama. at about 5:00 a.m. central time, and it crashed on approach. we believe in a field, not in a runway. but in a field short of the runway. we are told by the local authorities that both the pilot and the co-pilot died in this crash. there were no other structures on the ground involved and we don't know yet the cause of the crash. the ntsb has a go team on the way and they'll begin the investigation. it reminds us of two crashes of cargo planes, one in mumbai and another one was caused by a weight imbalance. we don't know what caused this fatal crash in birmingham. back to you. >> tom, thanks very much. >>> let's head over
