i'm joined by senior columnist from "the daily beast" matt lewis, also the author of "filthy rich politicianssis in the papers and whatnot about this mugshot and the role it plays in american society. msnbc called it a sinister apparition. i think we have a picture of this. reuters said yet another extraordinary moment for trump. you're so good at explaining things. how can all of these things be true at once? >> well, look, i think that this is donald trump in a nutshell. he has never wanted to be a uniter, he has never wanted to be a mainstream political figure, the things that a normal politician would do to try to grow their coalition, to try to become mainstream. donald trump doesn't do. what he is instead he wants to be a cult leader, therefore, things that simultaneously make him beloved also make him hated. he is an incredibly divisive figure and this is something he has actually pursued intentionally as a strategy and i would say the mugshot is merely the latest example of this. >> and you take this on head on in a new column where you address the conventional wisdom that he can't lo

matt lewis, you know, i was there, 2016 for that debate.s after the "access hollywood" tape with a number of women who accused the clintons of inappropriate conduct in the years past and changed the news cycle. you documented it. he was able to get -- steady himself but had help back then and the conservative media clearly at that point was with him and has been with him ever since. how d now? so many of the outlets, fox news included, seem to be flirting, had flirted with other candidates, you know, do you sense now that they are fully back on trump or keeping their options open because that conservative ecosystem has been so vital to his rise. >> yeah, i think they are largely with him. there's a temptation, a danger, i think, that they could leave him and maybe that is another reason that trump would want to show up at the debate. look, if he's logical, he might not show up at the debate, you could argue trump could say i'm up by 40 points, let's let everyone attack ron desantis instead of me. i just think he's guided more by things like
