matthew, you've had a chance to look at this video also. what do you make of it?yeah, really fascinating stuff. it's the first time, of course, that we've seen sergeant bergdahl since he was handed over to u.s. special forces there at that location at 10:30 eastern time on saturday morning at the weekend in eastern afghanistan. he clearly looks very gaunt, his head shaven, he's dressed in white. and it's revealing the sort of logistical operation that goes into these kinds of prisoner swaps that mark the end of a sort of conflict that we're witnessing under way at the moment in afghanistan. the taliban voiceover in pashto language saying something along lines of, we called off all our fighters in the region to make sure that the american special forces when they arrived were not attacked, indicating the high degree of coordination between the two sides on this issue. also, the mutual trust. as mentioned by i think you and christine earlier, the special forces never once turned their back, according to this video, on the taliban fighters themselves. there's a great

that's where we find matthew chance this morning. matthew, give us a sense. we have learned more about his condition, haven't we? >> reporter: well a little bit more in the sense that for the first time in two days the u.s. mlitary hospital here in southern germany have given us an update on his condition but are not saying much in their statement. it's a closed door operation when it comes to sergeant bergdahl at the moment. they are saying that every day his condition is improving. they are saying that he's now conversing with the medical staff and that he's becoming more engaged with his treatment care plan. so those are the only details they have given us over the past couple days. it's a little bit intention with the idea that sergeant bergdahl's life was in jeopardy which is why they had it to do that prisoner swap. we're not getting any sense from the medical team here that there's any kind of life threatening problem associated with sergeant bergdahl. there are some things they revealed that they are looking at his diet and nutritional needs as a resu

matthew, we know this could be a long process.ow about how long he may stay there in germany? >> reporter: we're not being told anything about that. in fact, what medical officials here at the landstuhl regional medical facility are saying is that, you know, there's no predetermined timeline for that reintegration period that he's embarked upon right now. it will very much be determined by the pace of his recovery and his ability to be able to talk properly and be able to, you know, recover from the various medical issues that he's apparently suffering with. in terms of what they are, they're not giving too much detail about that. there are privacy laws, apparently, that protect the patient from having what's wrong with him or her described by their doctors. but they're saying there are dietary concerns, nutritional concerns, but nothing particularly life-threatening. and i think that's important, because obviously, that's one of the reasons that the white house said they had to move right now to exchange sergeant bergdahl for tho

matthew chance, he's in germany. he joins us on the phone.atthew, as we take a look at these images of bergdahl, the first time we've actually seen him since this prisoner swap was concluded and he was released by the taliban handed over to the united states, is there anything to be gained looking at bergdahl and his condition to learn more about him? >> reporter: it's tough to say. it's the first glimpse we've had of bergdahl since he was handed over to u.s. authorities on saturday, the 30th of may. u.s. officials say this handover took place at about 10:30 a.m. eastern time in eastern afghanistan near the pakistan border. the taliban said this took place in eastern afghanistan. they also said that at least 18 armed taliban soldiers were present during this handover. indeed, the video also shows a number of taliban armed afghan militants in the frame as well. so, you know, it corroborates that side of the story. in terms of his health and welfare, he looks pretty gaunt. i think we have to go with what the medical officials say here in southe
