matthew? >> reporter: well, wolf, the russians are calling it a sputnik moment, a reference to that successfulected satellite launch by the soviet union in the 1950s that surprised everyone. this time though, it's a coronavirus vaccine that russian scientists are launching into the global pandemic. it's been in the pipeline for quite a while, but tonight we've got the first and clearest indication of when that vaccine will be set for approval for the russian public. we've been given a date by russian officials on the 10th of august or even earlier which is of course extraordinarily quick. russian officials say that the technology they've used has been used in the past. they're simply adjusting an old virus to be relevant to the coronavirus and they're doing that with data they've already got, so they've managed to do it much quicker. but they've also set aside the conventions, the human testing, and this is a vaccine that the scientists injected into themselves. and we've also learned tonight that the phase three crucial human trials will take place as the vaccine is made publicly available. >

matthew, what are you learning? >> reporter: wolf, it is a really interesting development tonight because russian officials are telling me at least 20 countries have expressed interest in getting the russian vaccine that of course could be approved as early as august 10th according to what we were told by russian officials yesterday. those countries including brazil, india, saudi arabia. so big countries many of them particularly brazil and india with significant problems with coronavirus. all of that despite the massive concerns hanging over the russian vaccine, concerns about safety, the human trials won't have been completed by the time the vaccine is approved. concerns about its effectiveness. the results that russia has got so far have not been publicized or peer reviewed so we can't check the results. and all of those concerns about foul play. the allegations that russian spies hacked into american, canadian, and british labs to steal vaccine secrets. that doesn't seem to have deterred at all the up to 20 -- at least 20 countri

matthew, take us inside what happened and tonight, how is the kremlin responding. >> reporter: wolf,se are absolutely extraordinary allegations, that russia is actually spying on organizations that are trying to find a coronavirus vaccine, organizations in the united states, in britain, and in canada. what the allegations are coming from those u.s. and other western security organizations is that the hacking group cozy bear, which we've heard about before in the hacking of the democratic national committee in 2016 during the presidential elections, has been involved in accessing vulnerable computer systems, using malware to upload and download files on infected machines. the kremlin, whenever it's confronted with any malign activity allegations like this, it always denies them, and that's been the case this time, kremlin's spokesperson saying russia has nothing to do with these attacks. security agents say despite these acts taking place, no damage was done to the effort to try to find a coronavirus vaccine, that's a good thing. but research into that vaccine at the moment, given the
