first of all i'm going to introduce maurice ruffin and maurice was born and raised in new orleans, he's published his debut novel the devils steps which cast a shadow in 2019. it was a finalist for the pen open book award and long listed for the first novel. maurice is an assistant professor of creative writing at lsu and also the 2020, 2021 donna ray grisham writer in residence at the university of mississippi. maurice, welcome back to the garden district bookshop. and it's my honor to introduce our author of note today and it's connor towne o'niell and connor's writing has appeared in the new york magazine, vulture, slate , rdna and the village voice. he works as a producer on npr cast white lies was a finalist for the 20/20 pulitzer prize and audio recording. originally from alaska lancaster pennsylvania he teaches at albany university and with the alabama prison art and education project and this is his first book so congratulations connor and can't wait to hear more about it. i'm going to turn this over to maurice and connor, taken away. >> connor, for this first portion my job is
