mcconnell didn't name names, but it's plain to see who he's concerned about. with a quartet of republican candidate who hand picked by donald trump in crucial senate races, dr. oz in pennsylvania. you just mentioned j.d. vance in ohio. that's a red-leaning state. it should not be this difficult for republicans to hold on, but in part because of a new candidate, it is. there's herschel walker in georgia. a candidate that mcconnell's advisers have long had concerns about, and to some extent, blake masters in arizona who is also trailing. and in wisconsin, you have a two-term incumbent, ron johnson, who is deeply unpopular in his home state, trailing the democrat mandela barnes by four points. a fox news poll released yesterday. republicans can't afford to lose any incumbents. they want a shot at winning back the senate this fall. so if you add it all together, it's not the only reason that republicans are struggling a bit more. there are other factors such as the supreme court overturning roe v. wade, galvanizing democratic voters, falling gas prices are helping

and it is really easy to see why mitch mcconnell is frustrated here. look at this past week alone, a super pac aligned with mitch mcconnell has had to come to the rescue of republican jd vance in ohio. that is a state that joe biden lost by eight points in 2020. they're now pouring $28 million into that race. then you look at the senate gop's campaign arm, they had to cut spending and shift around spending in order to preserve resources because a number of their candidates are struggling to raise money and then you have the nonpartisan cook political report which just yesterday moved the open pennsylvania senate race from the tossup column into the lead democrat column. that was seen as one of the democrats' best pickup opportunities and dr. mehmet oz has been struggling. and so democrats have all these reasons to have hope that they actually could hold on to the senate. but we should mention a few caveats here. they are still facing tough political head winds. joe biden's approval ratings are still hovering in the 40s. and republicans really need to f

and mitch mcconnell now blaming candidate quality. that is code for, blame it on donald trump, with the clock ticking toward the midterms. the 11th hour getting underway on this thursday night. good evening once again, i am stephanie ruhle. new revelations about the fbi's search of mar-a-lago may soon see the light of day. several media organizations, including nbc, were in a south florida court today, asking a judge to unseal the affidavit behind last week's search and seizure at donald trump's florida home. judge bruce reinhardt told the justice department he is inclined to release a redacted or edited version of the affidavit. that document details what prosecutors call probable cause, the evidence that brought the fbi agents to trump's home in the first place. prosecutors want to keep the entire thing under wraps. but the judge today ordered them to list their proposed redactions within a week. while the former guy, in many of his allies, have said they support the release of an unredacted version, this afternoon trump supporters

mcconnell put a stop to that. but he has lost control of his party.trump, -- elected, he's-ing it with cougars at mar-a-lago, he controls the party, you can show the candidates. and a lot of the candidates that he's chosen a pretty weak, let's be honest. and mitch mcconnell knows, that and this is a guy that is frustrated, he is beaten down. and obviously, we mentioned herschel walker and mehmet oz, as to we candidates. people don't talk about much as much, arizona, and new hampshire, -- sununu and doocy, popular center-right governors. both of them took a pass on the race because they did not want to deal with donald trump. instead, it was going to be insane pro insurrection candidates that run instead. those are two additional seats the republicans are probably going to lead leave on the table and so that's what we have got to establish for mitch mcconnell tonight. >> you set a whole lot there but perhaps -- what's wrong with cougars? >> i love cougars! if you're hanging out with them, by the pool, while yurt -- senate candidates. you would think th

now leader mcconnell has spent $3 million already to try to help j.d.the general election and reserved $25 million more. the president is sitting on a war chest of $100 million. is he going to help the candidates that he felt strong enough to endorse. is he going to do anything in the general election. >> martha: a great question. when you look at the senate leadership fund as you just said, committing upwards of $28 million to win a senate race in ohio, which has been fairly red. did you think you'd see yourself in that position, karl. >> i helped form the american cross road leadership fund. no, this is a race that should be put away. donald trump won the state by ten points. j.d. vance was a multi-candidate field. came out with roughly 30%. won the nomination. but the fact of the matter is money has to be spend and the first guy that tell you that is j.d. vance. i can tell you that because he told me that. this isn't just mitch mcconnell. this is also some of donald trump's nominees saying we need help. the question is where are they going to get hel

candidate quality from mitch mcconnell. how do you see this, and especially in relation to what is going on with liz cheney but also the republicans having to look at this with some reality? >> mitch mcconnell talking about some of those candidates. herschel walker. so, this was a kind of worried that republicans had last year when we asked them, donald trump has said he is going to be meddling in the primaries, ing candidates. behind closed doors, never in front of her camera or on the record with they say it would but it did. they were worried he was going to pick people who were just in his image, people who had never run for office and had never held office before, especially as high as it -- open office as the senate. and now you have all of these candidates who are either way behind where republicans should be. i'm talking about 11 points in pennsylvania, for example, with oz. seven points with ron johnson, sitting senator in june -- in wisconsin. mitch mcconnell has said this. other republicans are saying, how do we

i took senator mcconnell's words and his political analysis to be a kind of mitch mcconnell's versionn fire moment. mitch mcconnell more than anything else wants to be majority leader again. he thought he was going to get that last time. he didn't, largely because of donald trumpnd his insistence on making trouble for candides, especially in georgia. he is looking at it slipping away from his grasp again. that can fairly be tied to trump-backed candidates. republicans have been able to do this successfully in getting some of the more extreme candidates off the ballot, but they are risking the potential to seize control of the senate now. judy: what does it say that some of these trump-endorsed candidates could cost the republicans a majority? david: i see it slightly differently. mitch mcconnell is right, candidate quality matters in the senate race. herschel walker in georgia, dr. oz in pennsylvania, they are way underperforming. i don't think this reflects on donald trump. the king clown makes himself electable. the junior clowns have trouble. the people pretending to be trumpist ar
