lately it's proven difficult for martin mcdaniel. after officers found a suicide letter and a stockpile of prescription pills in his cell, they put him on suicide watch. a measure he insisted was unnecessary. mcdaniel was taken off suicide watch the following day. several weeks later he admitted that despite his earlier denials he was suicidal. >> when i wrote the letter, right, i had intentions of o.d.'ing because my kids wrote me a letter. and told me the day they was coming, right? i was going to wait until after visit and take them that night, right? but it's a good thing they come in the room, man. >> you were, then? >> yeah. yeah. yeah. no doubt about it. >> mcdaniel says his despair was over the impact his incarceration was having on his two young daughters. >> sometimes i think it would be better. >> what would? >> like what the letter said, right? then i don't have to weigh my options you know. i'd like to see my kids grow up, you know. but -- it's pretty, pretty [ bleep ] situation. >> while mcdaniel longs for a visit from

thad cochran defeated mcdaniel, who won the initial primary but not by enough to avoid a run-off.o how did cochran beat him? >> cochran relied on black democrats to put him over the top. >> jon: that's right. thad cochran won the mississippi republican primary because of the support of black democrats. before you jump to the conclusion that black democrats think very highly of thad cochran, rent -- let me give you just a taste of his opponent, mcdaniel. >> chris mcdaniel apparently said there's no place for federal funding of schools here in mississippi. >> if they pass reparations and my taxes go up, i ain't paying taxes. >> mcdaniel has already keynoted a neo-confederate event. he's retweeted white supremacists. >> jon: well, now, in mcdaniel's defense, the white supremacist's twitter account had some extremely cute cat videos. ah. hey, everybody, look. everybody, it's kitler. you know, you'll always be meow fuhrer. clearly mcdaniel's candidacy caused a great deal of concern in mississippi's african american community. is there any way mcdaniel could begin his concession speech

so sam, how much has that cost them so far over there in the mcdaniel campaign?ll, they haven't paid out any rewards yet. they're actually offering up to 15 of those $1,000 rewards, using it as a fund-raise tier. they're asking each person to contribute $15 so they can fund those 15 $1,000 rewards if anybody does come forward with evidence that leads to the arrest and conviction of voter fraud. >> so sam, what is your understanding of the state of the evidence as we sit here tonight? >> well, we know that there are, you know, 2,000 to 3,000 votes that are cross-over votes, we feel like probably statewide. the number that they keep saying of irregular votes has risen all the way up to 5,000, and then i've heard reports today of as high as 6,000, 7,000. the attorney, mitch tynor, could not give us an exact number during the press conference. but to put it in perspective, these are what they're calling irregular votes so it doesn't mean they can be contested or they'll be illogical votes. they say 3,000 come out of heinz county, the largest county in the state. we'v

mcdaniel claimed his campaign had found 8300 irregularities so far.hey'll promise the evidence for that claim. we've gotten brand new data about mississippi's primary. thad cochran did reverse his downward spin in this contest by coaxing voters who usually support democrats by supporting him. he drew african-american democrats into voting for limb in the runoff. cochran's margin of victory over chris mcdaniel came from the heavily democratic precincts. these are places where president obama got 90% of the vote in 2012. if it's true that cochran run by turning out african-american voters, what about the democrat in the senate race. he hasn't gotten much attention so far, there is a democrat who's going to be on this november's ballot. his name is travis childers. he served in congress as a very conservative democrat, he lost his seat in the 2010 gop wave. it was pretty clear what his strategy was when he entered the senate race. he was hoping republicaning would nominate mcdonnial but not cochran. against cochran who as of right now is going to be the

the cochran camp was accusing mcdaniel's camp of being associated with the kkk. student loans, and then there's also the race baiting we're going to talk about tonight. this is one week after the runoff election between the gop senate candidates, and the primary was on june 3rd, mcdaniel won by 6,600 votes. they didn't get to 50%. cochran won by 25,000 votes, 35,000 democrats voted for cochran in the gop runoff, which is very unheard of and very rare. if he hadn't gotten those democrats to run or vote, mcdaniel would have won the election elections. >> you have a baptist pastor saying the cochran campaign was paying $15 a vote? >> yes, you have this pastor, very well known pastor, lives in meridian, mississippi. he's accuse iing cochran of buy the vote. he says he was part of the extreme, and he also goes on to say that cochran's camp paid thousands of dollars to democratic voters in the black community, paid them each $15 to go and vote and support cochran. >> it was also an allegation, and i know the mcdaniel campaign, if you are a democrat and you voted in the

chris mcdaniel wants to challenge this. >> that's right. to take legal action. what they are announcing is they gathered thousands of what they call irregularities in the votes. what they insist are invalid crossover votes. people who voted in the democratic primary on june 3rd and in the republican run-off, which is illegal. they have to go through more steps to formally legally challenge, but they are building the case. on thad cochran side, i talked with people in his campaign and insist they are fine. what happened today, the votes were formally taken in and certified today in mississippi. they had monitors at all 82 points. they counted all those, but the mcdaniel campaign said their irregularities had nothing to do with that. mcdaniel is saying this is not something he is going to give up. i talked to a lot -- i reported on your show, african-american voters went out and said they voted for the very first time for a republican because they felt thad cochran had done good things for them in mississippi. those are the kinds of voters mc

does mcdaniel have a chance with this legal challenge? >> i actually do think he does.how i straight-up said, did you vote in the democratic primary, then vote in the republican primary, and did you know that's breaking the rules? i had callers call in saying, i was told i could vote whenever i wanted to in both primaries in these ads that ran on predominantly african-american radio sayings that said, if you don't vote for thad cochran tomorrow you will lose all your government aid, food stamps, including money that goes to african-american universities. if you don't spend $5 on gas you'll lose every government dime that you're receiving now. and there was 25,000, 30,000 people that went and voted that would have never showed up otherwise. he only lost by 7,000 votes. and a lot of those people voted in the democratic primary, which means they're not allowed to vote in the republican runoff. they said they were not told that otherwise, they just went and voted. i do think they has a very legitimate case. >> he's certainly educating a lot of people about how the election
