even though chipotle is growing faster than mcdonald's will it ever become the size of mcdonald's? >> that is obviously the big point. it is a smaller, faster growing company. but it is gaining share. and definitely doesn't have the global foot print. mcdonald's not just struggling with the stronger dollar but struggling with the chinese supplier. 9.9% was how much same store sales dropped in asia. they are struggling in russia where some franchises are under investigation. clearly problems plaguing big multinational companies. you look to the united states when you talk about whether these companies are losing their core customer and not chasing the millennials with this idea of good for you food. that really tells the story. you see that in the strength of chipotle versus the weakness in mcdonald's in the united states. >> maybe they are bored with it. let's move to the netflix side. are people spending so much money on media that they literally have no money for anything else? >> they are spending a lot of money on different kinds of media. part of that is to their teleco provid

mcdonald's weaker after losses in the third quarter. where the brands went wrong, joining the panel is michael kelly, the founder of unconventional partners and author of the book "all thumbs." i won't ask, michael, about the thumbs. what about the big brands, though? i kind of like the issue that herb raised here is the five-year plan a red herring for investors? >> well, when you start to reverse course it is for sure. i mean, you know, if you look at where coca-cola is, they are largely going to start refranchising their distribution and large measure added because they wanted to control the marketing. from my understanding. and so, now we're really reversing course on something and all part of a cost reduction effort, all part of getting rid of a very low margin business. labor costs are huge in distributi distribution. issues that go on. and that will, you know, really be the focus in 2015 along with their cost cutting but, you know, they have got to focus on the products, as well. >> and the core issue here, i guess that you would

mcdonald's is out with a series of commercials, statements, trying to bust the myth that surround mcdonald's a godfathers pizza. what d you think of mcdonald's trying to get back into the good books, the good works of millennials? >> i think it is a good move on their part. with the strength of social media, some information could be wrong and it could take off and hurt mcdonald's image. so if i was heading mcdonald's, i would do the same thing. how many millennials are coming to our restaurants based upon information i have seen, the number of millennials going to mcdonald's restaurant has started to decline. secondly, it would not take much for some sort of scare, some sort of rumor of mcdonald's food to blow up in social media and it could have a very devastating impact. their sales last month were negative. at mcdonald's they don't do very well with minus 3% sales for domestic units when they got nearly 15,000 units in the united states. that is a very big deal, so this is why they are looking for an opportunity to reverse the trend relative to millennials. stuart: you have a town about

so we're changing. >> mcdonald's says it is ramping up marketing campaigns to emphasize the quality of their food and making their menu simple as they move their menu to similarities such as chipotle, and they're ditching their sugary soft drinks, coke said the volume of cases fell per strength 1% per quarter in north america. >> there is no question we need to improve our execution in many markets, especially consumer strategies. >> other energy and coffee drinks are more appealing to millennials, the equity investments are radical, but i guess they have been a little late to get into the non-cob, with good reason, than selling a carb soft drink, it is going to be a long haul. >> it is a double whammy because these companies are facing difficult challenges from overseas, a weaker european and china economy. both coca-cola and mcdonald's get stronger sales abroad, meaning they could cut into profits, the timing could not be worse. as results increasingly are highlighting who are losing cuts with more customers. it is some of the biggest most powerful brands for consumers in the world.
