mcdonnell. the prosecution first outlined the case going over what they believe was a quid pro quo. they say that the mcdonnells used the power of the governor's office to enrich themselves, to line their pockets and accepted more than $150,000 in loans and gifts from wealthy businessman jonny williams. the loans totaled $220,000. they showed a few e-mails back and forth between both bob mcdonnell and jonny williams. they also showed one picture of bob mcdonnell in jonny williams's ferrari that they had the use of when they were on vacation at smith mountain lake. they're also saying that the mcdonnells tried to help promote a product, a vitamin supplement and this they tried to arrange meetings with jonny williams, that they did arrange meetings and tried to help him get that pill under research at virginia universities, uva and bcu. that didn't happen but there was an attempt, the prosecution says. the so the prosecution finished up and now when i just got out of the courtroom, it was maureen

the defense lawyer said in court, maureen mcdonnell was angry. she hated governor mcdonnell. defense council told the jurors, maureen and johnny had a relationship some would consider improper for two people not married. the defense lawyer said at one point the governor wrote a long e-mail to his wife begging her to help save the marriage. mr. mcdonnell planned to read the e-mail in court. bob has agreed to open up his marriage and his life to you. honestly none of this is any of our business. if a family or a couple is having trouble. if a marriage is in trouble. if it doesn't have public policy consequences, it is none of our business. even when the people involved are public figures. not unless there are some hypocrisy consequences. the defense strategy in the corruption trial is going to be there marriage is the key. they're going to make the personal matter of the quality of their marriage the centerpiece. the stuff about the crush and the loveless marriage and all the rest of that, that's being raised by the defense council for the mcdonnell's, this is how they're going

that a byproduct of this mcdonnell trial?> when i came to richmond seven years ago, pretty much everything sailed through, both sides were able to come together to find some sort of compromise to push through big pieces of legislation. over the past seven years, any type of effort for both sides to come together has broken down time and time again. if you point to one specific reason for why i think that's happening, it's the overall demographic shift here in virginia. this used to be a reliableably red state, easily won by republicans in presidential elections. when democrats won they were moderate democrats, even sometimes conservative democrats. this is a solidly purple state now starting to trend blue. republicans are holding on to every last possible piece of power that they can and as a result they are being more feisty and not allowing someone like terry mcauliffe, a well known democrat, someone that comes from a long line of democrats, including clinton democrats have any victories because of what that could mean for
