derek mcginty live in the newsroom right now. what else did the white house and the president have to say, derek. >> reporter: lesli, president obama made it very clear, osama bin laden is dead. there is no doubt about that. but he says releasing "very graphic photos is not who we are." the final decision came from the president three days after a team of navy s.e.a.l.s killed osama bin laden. >> the president has decided not to release any of the photographs of the deceased osama bin laden. >> reporter: in the interview with 60 minutes president obama cited two reasons for his decision. gruesomeness of the photos and implications of releasing them. the white house press secretary quoted the president from that interview. >> we don't need to spike the football and i think that given the graphic nature of these photos it would create some national security risk. >> reporter: the latest cnn poll shows more than half of americans surveyed believe the u.s. should release the pictures. and keeping them secret could fuel skeptics who a

our derek mcginty has been following the day's developments and you're hearing about other groups now speaking out too? >> reporter: indeed, lesli. first al-qaeda. now it is the taliban and the messages from both terrorist organizations had about the same tone. bin laden's death will be avenged. >> reporter: the afghan taliban is praising the terror leader saying his death will not undermine the war in afghanistan. in a statement sent today the taliban says bin laden's death "will give new impetus" a statement with a similar message delivered by al-qaida today. this as president obama traveled to fort campbell in kentucky. there members of the famous 101st airborne gave president obama a warm reception and away from the cameras he also personally thanked the members of the teams involved in the raid that killed osama bin laden. and gave them the presidential unit citation. the highest honor given to military units. >> when i give the order they were ready. and in recent days the whole world has learned just how ready they were. >> reporter: m meanwhi le more information coming out now

our derek mcginty has been following the story and joins us live from the satellite center with the latest on the raid. derek. >> lesli, the white house says it is putting out these new details at quote, record speeds, declassifying them to give us all insight into just what happened. and the details from the defense department, well let's just say there is a difference in what we have been hearing. >> a top white house official now says bin laden may have lived at that compound undetected for as long as six years. navy seals found his family and two other families there when they stormed in on sunday. the terrorist leader was in a room on the second floor and when they burst in, the white house says his wife rushed the field. she was shot in the leg, but not killed. then bin laden was shot and killed. the white house insists he resisted, but not armed. >> resistance does not require a firearm. >> the leader was identified by both dna and facial recognition technology. but, some skeptics including the taliban want more evidence that bin laden is actually dead. right now, the white house is

derek mcginty is joining us live from the newsroom with more on the terrorist group's message. >> reporter: for the first time both the taliban and al-qaida say we know that osama bin laden is dead and both terror groups are using that knowledge to encourage their ranks to exact revenge. all while the president is trying to personally thank the men who took bin laden out. president obama came to kentucky to welcome home members of the 101st airborne division just back from afghanistan. fort campbell is home to the specialized army aviation unit that carried the navy seals into bin laden's compound. he met in private with the entire assault force involved in the rage. the president personally thanking the team and awarding them a presidential unit citation. >> it is a chance for me to say on behalf of all americans and people around the world "job well done." >> reporter: for the first time al-qaida acknowledged bin laden is dead. they did it in an online posting in a statement titled "he lived as a good man and died as a martyr warning new attacks on americans saying their blood will be mi
