arrested in a daylong confrontation that started this morning when park police began clearing mcpherson square of camping materials. police say their aim is not to evict occupy protesters, but they are now enforcing a ban on camping. police in hazmat suits were also going through the square, part of a massive cleanup. ken begins our team coverage. reporter: hey, bruce. it's been a very busy day for everyone involved with occupy d.c. of course police showed up in riot gear before dawn to in essence clean this park out. take a look behind me. you can see the operations still taking place right now. those people you see in hazmat suits, they were brought here by the police earlier today. right now they're clearing out the tents, getting rid of hazardous materials that they found here as well as getting rid of anything that's considered bedding. of course park police in riot gear standing by the mcpherson square, they forced protesters out on the streets. i'll tell you something, they got a rude awakening today that still is is not sitting well. it was about 6:00 a.m. when u.s. park police showed

we begin with breaking news tonight, we're getting reports from mcpherson square in d.c. that a police officer has been hurt after a fro tester apparently threw a brick at him. you're looking at some video of an officer being helped off the ground of mcpherson square. we were told by u.s. park police that an officer was hit in the face by a brick. we don't know if this is the officer, he's being helped into a car and then whisked away. riot team on scene, people are not being allowed on to the grounds and there's about 100 or so gathered on k-street. we have cameras in that area, but a u.s. park police officer hit in the face with a brick at the occupied d.c. site. this comes after this morning park police officers going in and doing some endorsement activities to clear out some of the campers who may have been in mcpherson square. >> reporter: as a helicopter hovered above, mounted police and others in riot gear moved in on the ground. and demonstrate foors assembled their own -- after some pushing and shoving, confrontations didn't escalate much beyond that. soon metal

we learned a lesson from this. >> reporter: police cleared a majority of mcpherson square. debris and empty tents remains on the board that housed washington's most popular protest in the last few months. >> i was so proud of my city. you know, they told us this is how it's going to go, and it will be okay. and it's not what happened. >> reporter: clearly, the scene out here a lot different than earlier today. throughout the day and really compared to what the last few months have been like here in mcpherson square, now tents like this litter the park. they're torn, empty inside. the demonstrators here, most of them are gone. you can see only some of them have remained throughout the evening and of course, still a very clear police presence remains. officers say they'll stay here overnight and finish cleaning out the last portion of the park tomorrow morning. they say after they've made sure only empty tents remain will they allow demonstrators to return. meanwhile, the few occupiers still here say they're not done pushing their message. >> a lot of our committees are meeti

at mcpherson square. take a look. d.c. police and u.s. park police here, although it may be a little more quiet than it's been for a while, since this protest began in october. most of the protesters are out of the park tonight, at least for now. now take a look at video we shot earlier. this is what it looks like now after this morning's predawn raid. a muddy mess. some of the tents only partially standing. trash and containers everywhere. u.s. park police still in riot gear, going through the park inch by inch. presumably still inspecting it and keeping an eye on the protesters who have returned to one section of the park that is open. they won't have to comply with the no sleeping in the park rule. and others are vowing that they will come back, too. >> it was devastating and hurting, literally. there was a lot of violence and brutality. and yeah, not a good day. >> that said, camping is a tactic and this is not going to kill our movement. we are here to stay. >> now as i regroup, some of the protester

movement at mcpherson square and that's where we finder rick ward with the latest. they're bringing in a fork lift. what is the latest? >> reporter: we have a better sense what police are trying to do. you see the lights where the people are gathered. they set up barricades, iron-like fences around the center of the park. park police officers are disassembling what the occupy movement calls the tale of dreams. the black tarp is completely draped over the statute of general mcpherson and at the base of the pedestal. they're taking that down now and removing wooden pallets and other things assembled there. there doesn't seem to be an effort at this point to remove any tents or protesters from the outer ring or outer part of the park, the grassy area around the center. there focusing all attention to the center. we haven't heard any demands other than clear that central area. at this point, it would appear the goal of what we did see this morning is to clear that center of the park and clear that statute of the tarp. as you can see, the tarp is pretty much completely g

of course we saw some violence over at mcpherson square. things were very orderly and quite calm here at freedom plaza. this morning all is quiet. we did have one protester kind of walking around screaming loudly but that was pretty much it. there has been no major disruption here at freedom plaza. police are patrolling the area preparing for more inspections later this morning. the checks were orderly as i mentioned at freedom plaza sunday as crews and hazmat threw away any tents that posed a health risk. that includes the protesters' medical tent here. one man was arrested but s.w.a.t. team officers on standby never had to mobilized. since occupiers can no longer sleep here, many are staying at area shelters and churches. >> it was important for us to help them because we feel that they've been helping us so much in terms of spreading the message of the inequality in our nation. >> reporter: saturday as you may remember, 11 protesters were arrested during a police crackdown at mcpherson square. one man is now charged with felony assault a

news4's megan mcgrath joins us now from mcpherson square. >> reporter: it really does look a lot different. where i'm standing used to be covered, pretty much every square inch, by tents. can you see most of the tents in fact here at mcpherson square have been removed and the enforcement effort continues. let's pan over here and show you live here, you can see police officers are removing a tent that was here along right at the base of this tree. they went inside, they looked inside. there were some personal belongings and things which are against the rules. they began to remove this tent and there was a dead rat inside, a couple of live rats came scrambling out as they began to take it down here. now you can see that things are very different, not the same situation as what we were seeing on friday. frankly, the folks who work in this area are really hoping the people we talked to today that things are going to soon get back to normal. park service workers emptied crash cans in mcpherson square this morning. their job is easier than it has been in months. gone are most of the occupy d.c.

national park service crews found everything from human waste to rats in mcpherson square, some dead, some alive. fox 5's roz plater is in the newsroom to start us off tonight. >> well, u.s. park police are making rounds at both of the occupy d.c. sites tonight enforcing the no camping in the park rule and protestors tell us the officers told help to expect more inspections early tomorrow morning. this morning on day two of the sweep park police gave protestors at freedom plaza an hour warning, then came back and swept through the site looking for bedding, cooking materials, anything that could be used for camping. they said they will enforce the no sleeping rule. they cleared most of the tents hazmat teams took down a handful with unsanitary conditions of one person was arrested for threatening an officer, but there seems to be very little trouble. >> they came in here with a clear cut direct saying you get in compliance. we'll be out as fast as we can. they were here about three hours and they left. that was it. our kitchen got flying color inspection. our media and medical departme

those who remain were doing their best to keep mcpherson square clean.idents who live across from the encampment as well as bills owners are happy something was done to address the rat infestation and other health concerns. >> i feel bad for the park. the park didn't do anything wrong. i understand what the guys are trying to say. everybody's frustrated. >> i think it's been a very inefficient process of moving it out. it's something that should have been done awhile ago. now they need to go ahead and do it. >> reporter: national park service crews were back at it sunday morning, cleaning four months worth of occupation. not just mcpherson square, but also in freedom plaza, where things were much more calm and no arrests were reported. the downtown business improvement business wants the u.s. park police to keep the presence here in mcpherson square 24/7 so they can monitor activities at the encampment. they also want the u.s. park service to have maintenance crews on hand to clean up any mess and repair any damages to the square. police are also enforci

protesters are still occupying both mcpherson square and freedom plaza.an a day after the park service said it would enforce that camping ban in both parks. both sides appeared before a u.s. district judge this morning. one of the protesters filed a lawsuit to get an injunction against the park police. the judge denied that request, but did rule the federal government would have to serve any notice of eviction through that court. right now, the national park service says it has no immediate plan to close down the protests. >>> now, to the town of arizona where city council candidate who was kicked off the ballot is fighting back. we're talking about cabrera. last week a judge removed her name after ruling that her english speaking skills were not good enough to serve in office. under arizona law, office holders must be able to read, write, and speak in english. cabrera was born in arizona, but lived in mexico until she was 17 and she says she can handle her english well enough to serve. >> i speak english. a little maybe. but it's enough. >> okay, you jus
