but i'm pretty close. >> jon meacham, jon, thank you. we had more time to dissect this thing. i've got to get to some breaking news, though. >>> we're going back to virginia, breaking news about another high ranking statewide official who finds himself embroiled in a blackface photo controversy. hans nichols is standing by for us in richmond for the very latest. hans, what in the world is happening in the commonwealth? >> reporter: craig, this is another wrinkle in a very complicated situation down here in virginia. here is the latest. mark herring, the current attorney general, has just admitted that there is a photo of him in blackface from his college years when he was 19 years old at the university of virginia. he met earlier today with leaders, member of the black caucus here in richmond. he expressed contrition. here is what he's saying in his statement. this is a one-time occurrence and i accept full responsibility for my conduct. that conduct clearly shows that as a young man i had a callous and inexcusable lack of awareness and

i could go on and on and do a meacham on the subject.at a mess for the state of virginia. now you have the top three officials all with scandals, all with trouble and all vowing to stay in office and there seems to be very little the state of vac virginia can do about that. it's not even clear under the state constitution as rewritten in 1971, it not clear any of them can be impeached for activities that took place before they took office. it's totally unclear. so they might be there for a while. >> and, mike, if you look at the "washington post" poll that came out this week, virginians are split on whether northam should leave. but black voters in virginia are not split. by a 21% margin, they believe northam should stay. the poll found a deadlock saying 5 58 democrats say he should stay. as for attorney general mark r herri herring, who admitted to wearing blackface in college, 60% believe he should stay. 11% of residents have worn a blackface or know someone who has. the name not mentioned is the lieutenant governor, justin fairfax who

meacham. what do you make of that? the degree to the vein of optimism?at's one way booker is trying to differentiate himself, but it's being true to himself. in conversations i've had with him, everyone knows him as this sort of, i think, i don't know if kellyanne conway said it was a hallmark card, but it's like this idea of having not just sound bites but he's coming from a place of optimism in a time when he feels like the country is divided maybe more than ever in modern history or especially under president trump. i think that's something that democratic voters want to hear. while at the same time they're angry. they're upset. i think senator harris is someone who is not not optimistic, but she taps into this idea that he's going to be a fighter. she draws on her experience as a prosecutor, someone willing to hold folks accountable when they do wrong. that's not saying she's yelling or being angry. she's painting a cohesive, optimistic view of the country. >> all women have to show a tough side. >> the brand of the candidates, how they present thems
