meg whitman will work on $1 a year. semiconductor maker micron didn't help things in technology, reporting a loss in its fiscal fourth quarter. analyst had been expecting a penny per share profit. micron has been hurt by falling prices for memory chips used in personal computer. micron was the biggest loser among s&p 500 stocks, falling more than 14%. volume was heavy today as well. the stock fell to a new 52 week low, just above $5 per share. it has been a tough week for chip stocks. today, n-vidia fell 4%. advanced micro devices sparked some of the sector selling earlier in the week when it had a disappointing outlook. a.m.d. fell another 4% today. and intel dropped almost 4%. we mentioned earlier how the materials sector was the worst stock sector this quarter. it was also the worst today. heavy equipment maker ingersoll rand fell more than 12%. volume quadrupled with the stock falling to a new 52 week low. the stock is down 40% from its july prices and down more than 45% from its high in may, its third quarter outlo

it's newest boss, meg whitman, who used to run ebay, now says h-p will keep its personal computer business after all. back in mid-august, h-p announced it would spin off its p.c. business. the company says it would not create any more value. shares of h-p were up almost 5%. one of the big losers today was makeup company avon. shares plummeted 18%. volume sky-rocketed as the securities and exchange commission has launched a formal investigation. the focus is on whether avon broke foreign bribery laws. that was added insult to the injury of a disappointing earnings report, and worries the company's dividend may come under pressure. finally, the u.s. bond market saw higher interest rates and lower prices. the yield on the ten-year note jumped up to almost 2.4%, it's highest yield, lowest price since early august. and that's tonight's "market focus." >> tom: two words most commonly used to describe the economic climate today are risk" and "uncertainty." those two also characterize the business of aon. it's a commercial insurance broker working with companies in 120 countries. aon's c.e.o. desc

moody's placed hp on review for a possible down grade focusing on meg whitman's plans going forward including the decision to keep the pc business. whitman's strategy became clear but the stock plummeted more than 30%. it was ousted ceo who threatened to cut off the pc business declaring hp would focus on software not hardware but whitman said the company concluded it's spinnoff could be too costly. now, hardware division is safe hp had crucial decisions to make. today on bloomberg west we had executive vice president who runs the unit. i asked him about the future of hp. take a listen to what he had to say. >> many thing that's we work on every day innovation and design are at the top of the list ones we need to stay laser focused on. boy say we're good but we need to continue to improve and we will. >> and there is one area is the fate of its web os software unit. shifting gears let's check the broader economy. and there is a mixed day for stocks. traders happy because of progress in europe. small gains as well with shares of hp helping index stay in green territory. and there is about an h
