amelia has the science behind the twister, but first, let's go to megan fitzgerald with the impact. megan. >> reporter: where we are right now is along princeton avenue in the neighborhood that's hardest here in a town of salisbury. the national weather service says they came out here, they looked at a lot of the damage. but, specifically, they look at things like the circumference of a snapped tree, they were able to conclude just how strong the winds would have had to have been to snap a tree this thick, and that's one of the reasons why they believe that it was an ef 1 tornado that ripped through this town. surveillance cameras were rolling outside hoppers restaurant. >> the video is incredible. >> reporter: capturing dramatic moments when strong winds flipped over cars dragging them across the people and today national weather service officials determine that the restaurant was where an ef 1 tornado first touched down. >> the two things that lead us closer to the range would be the cars and they flipped over the one building, open building that had the back walls taken out. >> re

megan fitzgerald talked with the grandfather who described the frightening moments to her. >> reporter: absolutely terrifying moments for this entire family. to set the scene there is a total of five people that live inside this apartment. there is the grandfather named orlando, his wife, daughter, daughter's husband and 7-year-old son. it was around 9:00 when the investigators say the five suspects stormed inside this apartment gagging, tying up and blind folding this family. we have only used orlando's first name for his own safety. it all started with a knock on the door. orlando says he was sleeping along with his wife in one bedroom. his son-in-law and grand son were in the room next door when orlando opened the door he says three men entered before two more walked in moments later. he says t up but his son-in-law was badly beaten and stabbed. orlando says his daughter came home from working at a check cashing business and was met by the suspects inside and was tied up overnight until this morning. police say that the suspects knew that the daughter worked at a check cashing place

megan fitzgerald went there today to see how people in the town are doing 24 hours later. >> reporter: the mayor says the town is getting back together because crews have been working around the clock to pick up, clean up debris, putting it through wood chippers. if you take a look behind me, just to give u is the hardest hit neighborhood on princeton avenue. a tree went crashing through this roof. this is just one of two homes in the neighborhood that's been condemned. >> we've rated this tornado and it is a tornado, an ef-1. the maximum winds somewhere in the 100 to 105 mile an hour range. >> reporter: after surveying the damage for hours, national weather service officials say the path of the tornado was about a mile long. the width was likely larger than a football field. >> we were in the house. my daughter was upstairs. i hear her yell. next thing i know, it was like this huge boom sound, kind of. and then it was just over with. >> reporter: christine lives along princeton avenue, which officials say was one of the hardest hit neighborhoods. >> people were coming outside. >> rep
