megan mcgrath has the latest on the student's condition. >> reporter: the student is in grave condition, fighting for his life in an area hospital. he is 17 years old and a student here at wheaton high school. police thought this was a basic hit and run. he was struck by a chevy avalanche near the shopping center at viers mill and randolph road in wheaton. the driver did not stay on the scene. just a few hours later, the driver and passengers in the avalanche turned up at the police station and gave their version of what happened. police say there may have been an altercation between two small groups at the shopping center, which led to the 17-year-old being struck. they're looking into the possibility that this may have been an intentional act. investigators have not been able to talk to the 17 because he is in grave condition can. they just have the one account from the people in the avalanche. so they want to get an independent account of what happened. so police are looking for witnesses, anyone who may have been at that shopping center between unique thrift store and burger king ar
