let's go to news 4 megan mcgrath with the latest on this. where are you exactly? >> if you look behind me here, we're along alabama avenue right where it's intersects with sixth and randall street here in southeast. you can see the police officers here down in that parking lot area. this is along the side of martin luther king almostary school and that is where they are focusing much of their attention, right here in this little road that goes down to a parking area and it looks like there's some sort of an athletic field there. there was a shooting late last night and police have been here ever since. a very large police presence here. they have this little section cordoned off. they also have another area on the other side sixth street cordoned off as well. you can see the video shot overnight here. you can see that we were on the scene when one person was taken into custody. not a lot of detail is being provided at this point. weave been contacting pio and others within the police department but they really are not releasing much information. a large presence h

this was megan mcgrath is live at police headquarters with what activists are saying and what's next. >> reporter: well, police chief cathy lanier says her officers are naturally upset. the protest here in the district last night was peaceful, but of course that was not the case in dallas. with additional protests scheduled over the coming days, they're taking precautions. but the bottom line here is that chief lanier says they have a job to do and they're going to do it, just like any other day. what began as a peaceful protest in dallas turned into a sniper-style attack on police. here in the district, cops are taking extra precautions, patrolling in twos until further notice. precautions are also being taken at department facilities. >> we have increased our security around our facilities and our lots. so really just to try and continue to stay on our toes and do our job is a big thing for us. >> reporter: protests in response to recent officer-involved shootings took place across the country last ni demonstrators gathered outside the white house and made their way to the u.s. capi

news 4 megan mcgrath is live now at reagan nationath how things are looking there this morning. >> reporters very busy this morning. this is the southwest terminal. that's the entrance to the terminal. you can see the line is starting to go beyond the doors there. it stretches all the way down, all the way to the other end there. so a lot of people waiting in line here this morning as they try to make their flights. there were hundreds of flights that were canceled because of this computer glitch and people are scrambling to get where they need to go here today. scrambling to get additional flights. some are just leaving this morning and encountering these large crowds. here's what happened in a nut shell. they had a computer glitch. that's what caused all the problems. there was a shut down of ion line service. about 1 -- 700 flights were delayed or canceled yesterday. they are allowing for flexible rebooking but there's a lot of competition for those flights. so people who had their flights canceled, they are all competing for seats on other flights that are headed out today. this mess. y

megan mcgrath is live on the scene now with more. what's going on? >> reporter: well, six hours later, you can see that police are still here on the scene, the side of the building that you see there that is martin luther king elementary school. right around midnight, a shot spotter in the area picked up gunfire in the area of sixth and alabama. when police arrived, they saw an suv with five people inside. when they arrived, the people inside that vehicle immediately opened fire on the responding officers. police fired back. no one was hit. five people in the suv, though, were eventually taken into custody and are being talked to by police. still an active investigation here on the scene. back to you. >> thank you. >>> in a few hours, president obama will leave the white house for dallas, texas, to help lead the nation in honoring the lives of five officers killed in last week's tragedy there. it is the worst attack on police officers since 9/11 and we've learned several other high-ranking official will be there to pay their respects as well. sarah r

megan mcgrath is live at the crystal city metro station, which will be shut down. hi, megan. >> reporter: well, good morning. yeah, the next phase of work still happening on the yellow and blue lines, but this time just in a different spot. beginning tomorrow morning the crystal city metro station will be closed. closed for about a week. people trying to get to reagan national from d.c. or rosland will have to take a shuttle bus. same line, different section. metro's safetrack surge four gets under way tomorrow morning. the work zone is now north of reagan national airport on the yellow and blue lines. >> we either go to pentagon city or get on the bus. >> reporter: riders were given pamphlets this mornin explaining the impact. it's a complete shutdown between reagan national airport and pentagon city, which means the crystal city station will be closed. >> just take the bus from my location instead of stopping here, we're going to get off at pentagon city. so it's not going to be much of an inconvenience. >> reporter: shuttle buses are an alternative. the work is e

megan mcgrath is live with how our region is preparing for the heat. >> reporter: not too bad right now but that's going to change in a matter of hours as this heat wave kicks in. it's going to be very, very hot over the weekend and into monday. this is the kind of heat that can actually be dangerous. fire houses around the district like the one you see behind me here, they are expecting to see a spike in the number of emergency calls related to the heat and they are doing a few things to account for that. first of all, they are starting today they are going to add five extra ambulance and medic units to handle that spike that they are expecting in calls and they are also going to be asking people to take some precautions and these are the sort of the things that we hear every time we see the heat, the mercury really rise here and a lot of it is common sense. limit your time outdoors during especially the really hot times of the day, limit your exercise to the early morning hours or after the sun starts to set when it cools down, and also know the symptoms for heat-related illnesses. >>
