i-team reporter melanie woodrow spoke with one of the suspects today at santa rita jail. >> she is in the newsroom now with the very latest on this. melanie? >> dan and kristen, i spoke with 21-year-old javon lee over an internet video visitation to santa rita jail. he did not want to appear on camera, but he did answer several of my questions. for the first time we're hearing from one of two men accused in connection with 34-year-old shuo zeng's death. the man died in oakland as he attempted to get his stolen laptop back. 22-year-old byron reed and 21-year-old javon lee are in custody. reed is the suspected getaway driver and lee was involved in taking the laptop. they agreed to speak to abc7 news, but did not want to appear on camera. he says reed is his friend. when i asked if he was with reed december 31st, he said, quote, i'm not trying to talk about that. >> do you belong in jail? should you be there? lee responded, quote, no, i shouldn't be here. according to charging documents, surveillance video shows two individuals snatching a laptop from zeng. the two suspects fled into a

. >> abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is in the newsroom with new information tonight. melanie? >> dan and liz, i just learned the name of the sfo commissioner who turned down mohammed nuru and nick bovis' alleged bribe. t it is linda creighton. i spoke with her on the phone, and she told me, quote, her integrity means a lot to her. i also spoke to her attorney, who told me he had no comment. nuru and bovis were each released on $2 million bond. the department of public works says that fbi investigators gathered documents from nuru's office at city hall yesterday afternoon. tonight he is on administrative leave. alleged corruption, bribery, and side deals by one of san francisco's highest ranking employees, director of public works mohammed nuru. restaurateur nick bovis also charged in a criminal complaint with honest services wire fraud in connection with an alleged scheme to bribe a san francisco airport commissioner. the alleged bribe, $5,000 cash and free travel in exchange for the commissioner's assistance to win a bid for the right to run a restaurant at sfo. both men alle

abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live outside the courthouse in oakland. melanie? >> reporter: lee's bail is set at $255,000. reed is held without bail. his sister was at court today. she says she was watching her daughter when the crime occurred. she and zeng's cousin shared this picture with abc 7 news news from their christmas trip to miami. zeng was working on his laptop at the montclair starbucks in oakland when someone stole it. he ran after the thief, was hit by the getaway vehicle and later died. oakland police arrested javon lee and byron reed. according to charging documents, surveillance video shows reed was the getaway driver. reed's sister tells reporters he was at her home watching her 3-year-old. abc 7 news would typically blur a child's face but she asked us to share this picture without editing it. >> helping me out. i have four kids and no daddy in their life. my brother is there for me all the time. and now they want to take him from me. that's not fair. >> reporter: reed is charged with special circumstance murder and robbery. he was previously

abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow joins us live from oakland's montclair village with their words. melanie? >> ama, people who knew this young man are absolutely devastated. you can see that there are flowers that have been left here where he passed away. this was his 34th birthday, and it was just hours before he was getting ready to host a joint birthday/new year's eve celebration at his own apartment. tonight we are honoring his family's wishes and not revealing his name. post-it notes filled with condolences and questions are stuck to the window of this montclair starbucks. peter tseng can't believe his friend is gone. he was working on his laptop when someone stole it. witnesses say one suspect snatched the laptop while another held the door open and a third drove the getaway car. the victim was dragged by the getaway car as he attempted to get his laptop back. >> i didn't think he was the type to do that. >> his cousin says he is a software engineer. she believes he either wanted to preserve all of his research or perhaps save the photos he was editing from their recent vacati

many the newsroom, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >>> a student atlas lomas high school in walnut creekg a handgun to campus. officers made the arrest after receiving calls that a student was carrying a concealed weapon. officers reportedly found the gun inside the student's backpack. school administrators did place the campus on lockdown as a precautionary measure. >>> an east bay pe teacher has been arrested for allegedly having relationships with students decades ago. lafayette police arrested kyle anne wood last night at her home in pleasant hill. investigators say wood had inappropriate and unlawful relationships with two female minor students between 1996 and '98 when she was a teacher at acalana high school. wood is currently a teacher at miramonte where she is now on administrative leave. the district superintendent spoke with abc7 news today. >> when we hear of something like, this it really shakes us to the core, and so we are reaching out and if anyone knows anything, we want them to come forward. >> the only charges filed only involve one victim as the other is deceased now.

abc7 reporter melanie woodrow has been digging into state data and is here to tell us where there areome concerns. >> the seismic safety act originally gave hospitals until 2008 to make their buildings safe in a major earthquake. many hospitals applied forbe an extension until january 21st 2020 and have been granted new ex-sentence, even though they have a number of buildings that pose a risk of collapse. anni-team analysis of data from california's statewide office of health planning and development found 41 bay area buildings that pose a risk of collapsing in the event of an earthquake. buildings like this one in san francisco or this one in palo alto may not stand up to a major quake. for the last 12 years, more than 200 hospital facilities across the state have been working to upgrade their buildings to make them more structurally sound. santa clara valley medical center is one of several hospitals that applied for and was granted an extension beyond an already existing january 1, 2020 extension. according to the state, santa clara valley medical center has five buildings that pos
